    I cannot imagine changing my 2003 OEM BOSE system, it sounds superb with amazing bass response.
    I've not been impressed with other aftermarket head units in terms of sound quality and unless you integrate it with the OEM amps they just don't cut it compared to the original.
    Yes better functionality from modern head units but sound .........I've yet to be convinced.
    I use the AUX jack socket in my glove box linked to an MPOW Bluetooth adaptor to listen to my phone playlist.
    Works great.

      I have a 2003 Sl500 and use the AUX in the glove compartment and a MPOW Bluetooth adapter for a TH-cam playlist on my phone.The sound quality is very good from all sources and i upgraded the stock speakers for the Bose ones.Sometimes though i would like a little more power as i find i reach the higher volumes to quick for certain types of music or moods.

    • @alealtomari7902
      @alealtomari7902 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm curious guys... What's the difference between plug a bluetooth adaptor in the AUX port instead of directly connecting the phone? I'm a new SL owner, I've connected the phone via AUX but the volume is very low and the sound comes only from one side of the car...

    Hey Tavarish - the location of the amp is nice, but if you drive it hard enough and long enough it will eventually overheat, regardless of the quality of the amp - especially a concern because you're in FL. If I were you I would install a couple 120mm PC case fans to get some airflow. Don't run the fans to the +12v or they'll stay on all the time ;) You can use a relay to turn them on and run the switched lead to that and grab the power from the same 12v constant that goes to the amp. It will take some more time but will be worth it in the end. Ask me how I know this ;)

    • @LouisSubearth
      @LouisSubearth 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Josh Hayes You drained your batteries with PC fans, didn't you?

    • @renyn21
      @renyn21 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Louis Subearth I'd think he overheated his amp rather than draining his battery, it would take a long time to drain a car battery with some pc fans compared to leaving the lights on.

    Tavarish,
    Keep an eye on the heat in the CD-changer cubby hole when using the sub. While many new amps can manage their heat, their heat management systems are based on the assumption of free air flow. Perhaps a couple 80mm fans in the cubby hole would help out materially.
    An amp that gets too hot loses the ability to maintain its impedance at a given power output. I assume you're running it at 2 Ohms, so for around town without active cooling (so a couple $4 80mm fans) you'd be fine. Wanna drive somewhere in the summer and park the car in the sun without active cooling? Could be a problem if you want to use the sub on the way home.
    Powering the fans would be super easy, and could be done with a relay using the remote wire (blue 16 AG wire going into the amp) and then grabbing power from the 8 AG power wire and grounding it via either chassis ground or the ground wire on the amp.
    Some cloth electrical tape or plastic loom will make the install look clean, and don't forget to cut wires to length to keep the install looking nice.
    If you want help give me a shout.
    Best,
    E

    It's a shame you didn't hear the unmolested OEM head unit.
    My 2003 system sounds superb.
    I've heard a Chinese system and it's pants.
    Android might have up to date touch screen but the sound processors are definitely no where near OEM quality, so it's a no from me!
    I use a bluetooth adaptor in the glovebox and works perfectly so will be staying OEM

      that headunit doesn't have a SIM card for 2/3/4g communication, so there's no way for that to be used as a tracker except if it were connected to a seperate wifi 4g modem (myfi) or by wifi tethering to a phone.

    A few quick notes for other R230 owners thinking of swapping out their old Command Systems. Tavarish got lucky that the previous owner had already done some work on the stereo system. If your system is in stock condition, then EVERYTHING must be replaced. Speakers (the Bose Speakers are 2ohm with low load wiring), New speaker wiring, new amp & wiring. Basically the entire system is built from the ground up since the Command system is all Fiber optic.
    In the R230, you'll lose the ability to adjust your clock, since that's done from the Command unit. But it's no big deal. Just unplug the ground cable in your trunk for 5 seconds at exactly 12:00, and you'll then have the correct time on the clock.
    Those thinking of purchasing an Android head unit DEFINITELY ONLY purchase an Android 6.0 and above unit as prior versions have up to 45 second boot times. The Android 6.0 units have quick boot which eliminates the constant reboots, resulting in a 1-2 second bootup. You don't even see the logo screen. It just boots directly to your home screen.
    And I couldn't imagine driving a vehicle without onboard Torque again. So convenient to have all that information at your fingertips and being able to instantly reset Check Engine lights is awesome!

I wish you showed how easy it is to plug and play, I know you didn't have a stock unit, but omg.. I am a damn commercial pilot and mechanic. And and was like wtf is all of this extra crap. ( I knew after I downloaded the the pic from the web, but my head unit didn't come with any instructions) I wish we were friends,,,,, all of you mods are awesome you have a great channel, but I overspent on a impulse buy, but LOVE THE CAR,,, $$$ it as much now as a small airplane, and will stay in the family for some time now. Hi Tavarish. In August I bought a 2002 SL500 (R230) in the UK (I live on the Isle of Man) which had this Android set fitted by the previous owner. Unfortunately he didn't get the Canbus box so the steering wheel controls and other stuff doesn't work. I contacted Seicane (and Rupse who do an identical HL8817 unit) to buy the canbus box and neither will supply, which is hugely annoying. I bought a generic MB2001- adaptor but my car audio guy says it doesn't work either. And we're STILL trying to identify a 1.5A current drain (not the head unit which we suspected. Not a Bose OEM so don't think there are amps hidden away anywhere that might be powered constantly. Anyhoo - love your stuff (especially the SL stuff). Best regards from a small island! Stu

    Wow that company even makes a radio for my 2002 E430! Finding stuff on their website sucks, but eventually I found it. I need the navigation face plate since my car didn't have the dbl din radio but eBay should have it

    The company that makes these head units does so for a wide variety of vehicles. I wish they were around years ago when I modded a Nexus 7 into my radio.

    I've seen these Head Units and wondered if they were any good. I'm like you and think that OEM is important particularly in a "prestige" vehicle and it is excellent that you were able to post this. Great job and well done to Seicane as well.

    Next turn it into a gaming console! I have one in my 2005 E320 CDI, have a Xbox 360 controller hooked up to it and a few emulators like N64 and Sega Genesis! Also have a 2nd screen wired up for the people in the back seat. And lastly, I also hooked up a Sony PS2 to it with 2 wireless controllers and an 80GB hard drive loaded with games! And yes, it's a nice clean setup 😉

    Tavarish make sure the amp is pushing enough RMS power to run the speakers. If they are high end, they might need more power to sound proper. Even the best speakers will sound bad if not powered properly.

    Really nice job Tavarish and well done reconciling all the previous owners cabling madness.
    You really are a talented and interesting mechanic to watch.
    You do know though that you repeatedly use the term 'OEM' incorrectly?
    Instead of saying this 'is an OEM look' you would correctly say 'this is an original factory look'
    It's not just you though, all the TH-cam car guys seem to also misunderstand this term.

    This is actually really cool. Definitely will bring some life to old Mercs. I'm sure if you buy an early G wagon, update the steering wheel, dash and Infotainment display it'd be a bargain to ball in a budget. (All the money you save you can use for when the electronics decide to commit sudoku.

    Thats so dope and I'm so happy you put Torque on that thing! Also, that amp might over heat in that small space, they rely on passive airflow to cool the MOFSETS and stuff, so just keep an eye on it. Loved the vid Tavarish!

  • @SkydiveSim

    When you say that if using the original Bose system there is a cable that will be run directly to the amp, does that mean it bypasses the fiber optics? If that is the case can any head unit be used by running a cable directly to the amp?

    Great work! I spent quite some time humming and hawing about getting one for my R171 with the pitiful Audio20 stereo, but there weren't enough good reviews.
    I ended up with a Sony XAV-AX100, using the harness from Connects2. It took a while to get the right harness figured out, but they came through.
    I'm happy with what I've got, but now I'm jealous of your setup!

    The radio won't fit SL class newe than 2007 due to the different radio and NAV system. Also, remember that 07-08 parts usually won't fit any other R230 as those to M.Y. had a unique radio.

    I believe future infotainment on most cars would be android system bcz it only make sense specially with cars having cool futures this will connect your car with ur phone in different level. U can install similar apps like u did and know exactly whats wrong with ur car and not get ripped off by mechanics for diagnostics and repairs, u will have all the info before u take it to mechanic.

    Be careful with the placement of the amp. Amps can get hot and can damage themselves and parts around it. That is why it is vital for amps to have plenty of air circulation around them.
