Bob, I liked the project, more over I liked the way you structured your video. Direct and straight to the point with no BSing around and not overly wordy. Stay with that and I'm a fan for life.

I really enjoy these videos on ILTMS. Every single video, or at least 99% are entertaining with the music and quick clips of each step, while also informative to help teach people the ins and outs of making things.
I always enjoyed puzzle solving and making things, but these videos have made me want to get involved with making cool practical real life things and I plan on trying when I have the room and resources to get started.

At the end, when you were describing the other benefits to having the hole in drilled in your workbench, I realized that it could be really useful for cleaning up your workbench. To your point, the downdraft really only works for finer dust. If you had larger chips or shavings from using, say, a router or a handplane on your workbench, presumably, you could just sweep the chips in the bin with the shop vac turned on. Seems like it would make clean-up a lot easier!

I built one of these last year as a stand alone. It sure make a big difference to my lungs and eyes. I don't know how often others find themselves in a cloud of dust but this is a great way to better take care of yourself.

Just found your page. Love it. An additional use for this box would be to get a piece of 1/4" Plexi or safety glass either to fit or in a frame to fit. One of the small LED hand held spotlights inside the box and you've got a light table.

I built one from your idea. It works great but only covers a small area. I then went to my work bench where my tabletop sanders are located. I put 1/2 holes in a 2" grid pattern and set it up to receive my shopvac. It works great, but I have to sweep some dust across the top. It greatly cut down on airborne dust and sped up the clean up to a few seconds! Thanks!

Wow, great video man, I am a boat builder, and have been planning to build my own larger scale dust collector that is built into my work bench, one thats 8 feet long by 3 inches, set to the back of my 8x4 foot mobile work bench. Your video gave me some great ideas!

This is brilliant - I'm using an old formica kitchen counter as my workbench, and I got tired of the sink (which I realized I'm never plumbing in), so I just removed it and blanked it off with a scrap piece of MDF. Your insert solves 2 problems: controlling wood & metal dust in the room and making a flush counter.(I'll just have to glue up some cleats underneath to attach it.) Thanks!

SUGGESTION… use the peg board as a guide for drilling larger holes with greater but consistent spacing. These can double for bench dog/hold downs/jigs and down draft. With the 1/4in center drill bit on an appropriately sized hole saw, you can quickly layout a grid… using two layers of material (your choice) or even scrap LVL you can find in a job site dumpster you get a solid top that does both work and dust abatement!

Hi Bob. I cant tell how much I enjoy your channel. I am an avid fan of all the stuff you make and inspires me a lot. Unfortunately I live in a tiny apartment in NY and I dont have any place for any tools. All I own is a drill and an electric stapler. I understand that I can get all the wood precut to dimensions etc from any stores like HomeDepot but for a total amateur like me and who was brought up in a home, where everything I touched was made of expensive wood like Teak, Rosewood etc, I lack the understanding of millions of options that are available. When I saw MDF at my local hardware store, it appeared weak and I did not like it so much. Could you please do a video explaining the various materials and their pros and cons that you regularly use. People like me would really appreciate that. Oh btw, you can find a simple haptic system I built several years ago in my channel.

Literally the past week I considered very similar idea, with two small differences - I need to make a table of a little smaller size and need low walls from 3 parties are necessary (I work with the engraver). Thanks for idea!
I needed only to think up how to make sidewalls developing that they thus gave an flat surface of a table that it was possible to use and as a usual little table, for drawing or something similar.

I used to run a Slitter, a machine that cuts gigantic rolls of paper into smaller rolls of paper. The splice board was made of two downdraft boxes to hold the paper in place while you removed scrap and put in the splice. There were also some clamps and a cutting groove... anyhow, a downdraft table can be used to hold things in place. If you place paper that naturally wants to curl on that box it will lay flat. It can come in handy where you might otherwise need tape, but you don't want to use tape. I had not considered using it as part of the dust collector. That is a great idea!

I've only just come across your videos recently. Good stuff man!
Regarding this downdraft table, another option you could do it make it a bit deeper and do a Flush Mount Router table like Grant Thompson's.
Multi Purpose and it could still be handy to have the dust extraction on when the router is going.
Then any time you need to change it, Just swap out to peg board!

Well, I finally broke down and decided to make this downdraft table. I know that you said that it wasn't necessarily for the larger sawdust, and mostly the fine saw dust. I am not sure that mine works as well as yours. I actually followed your design to the "t" except for making my box 21"x 18" as opposed to 18 square and I used a piece of luan with holes drilled instead of pegboard which I didn't have anyways. Overall it worked great other than a few mishaps like putting the bottom on the wrong side. lol
Either way, thanks again for making these video's and being my favorite channel. I would really really love more project videos especially the ones that you make things "for" your shop. aka the downdraft table, dust collection, dust collector arduino blast gates, etc. I also loved the brain pick with matthias Wandel.
    Thanks again.

***** Hey Matt! Sorry it's not working that well. How powerful is the vac? Mine isn't super powerful, but it works alright for sanding. It's definitely not something you could use for a vacuum forming table or anything without a LOT more suction.
