    I’m a woodcarver who has been looking for solution to the dust problem. At a previous residence I was able to carve easily in my unfinished basement and not worry too much about the dust, but in my current home I have a finished basement and don’t want to trash it.
    Thanks to this video, I can at least apply my old dust collector in an inexpensive and portable manner and use it in the garage.
    I was going to build my own table, and that’s what brought me here. It’s going to work perfectly for my needs

    Thank you so much!! You are an exceptionally good teacher/instructor & model. You do a great job of blending clarity, precision, explanation & demonstration, with good voice tone and speaking rate. I just discovered you & am surprised about the small numbers of likes; hopefully it's because you are relatively new. In case you have not thought of it, I recommend you check into Reddit as another way of getting your good work appreciated, and ............. assisting with whatever goals you have.
    I just resumed woodcarving after 40 years (76 now). I've got so much to learn and have been daunted by all it takes to prepare my workspace and equipment to do the work I want. Your video makes the next step of setting up a workstation dust collection system seem much more straightforward & manageable.
    As you noted above, protecting your lungs from the fine dust particles is another crucial challenge. I too have a beard. I checked OHSA's recommendations & was not willing to pay the large expense for the full respirator system, required for anyone with facial hair. So, I kept searching. Here's what I got: Resp-O-Rator (videos are on TH-cam). Unfortunately, because of the demand for material for face masks, the inventor/developer cannot get the material for his device. I contacted him directly. He was not able to produce them in sufficient numbers to distribute to sites that sell them, but, he sold me one. He is temporarily using a slightly less efficient filter (still 95%+). Here is his contact information : James Duxbury, Duxterity LLC
    336-227-7168, cyberdux@bellsouth.net. And, the device is inexpensive, and he's a really nice guy

    Nice build, you might consider putting a piece of wood or lexan inside the box at a diagonal to cut down the volume of the box to increase suction and help use gravity to sned some of the dust at the far end towards the suction port.

    Great concept.
    Does the vacuum not get clogged up?
    Also, quick tip: You'd get an even smoother Silicone finish if you mixed that water with a drop or two of dish soap. This way there is absolutely 0.000001% chance of any dust catching on the Silicone 😉

    • @xyzcreate
      @xyzcreate  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for watching and for the tip! I will definitely have to try that out next time. As for the vacuum clogging not really, however to make it more effective you could add a small cheap filter in the box where the hose connects. That should greatly reduce the dust going into your shop vac and significantly increase the life of those pricey shop vac filters. Alternatively you could add a dust cyclone in between the downdraft table and the shop vac.

    That was an excellent wonderful solution for a downdraft table. I was looking for a simple solution for dust collection when I do Dremel wood carving. I think this may work well for that . Found all the items in my local Lowe’s, built this and tested it today. I couldn’t find one of those flanges like you used to hook your hose up to so I used a rubber pvc pipe connection to pass through the wall of the box. All seems to be working OK except the caulk that I used, even though it’s been setting up for a couple weeks, never really grasped the plastic surfaces and is able to be pulled off. Where did you find that flange and are you using a specific type of caulk? Thanks for the video!!

    • @xyzcreate
      @xyzcreate  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say it works way better than just a shopvac attached to a sander. Normally the shop vac can only collect the dust through the five or six holes on the sander's pad, but it can't collect the dust that flys off from the sides. The downdraft table eliminates that problem.

    Why seal the top to the base? Why not use a foam gasket, then one an clean the inside. Handy table.

      The silicone was allowed to fully cure before attaching the lid and only acts as a seal. The lid is completely removable.
