Sometimes I'm glad that I am ill educated with regards to opera....I would hate to not have been able to enjoy that. I have no idea what some do not like but I have listened to many versions of Casta Diva and this is the only one to have stopped me in my tracks. Simply beautiful.

Monserrat Caballe is much better than Maria Callas. Maria Guleghina is much better than Maria Callas. Мария Каллас была дешёвкой в жизни, которая многократно отказывала своей матери в её просьбе посылать ей сто долларов в месяц - на пропитание... Такая личносьт не может петь хорошо. И исполняла Каллас роли так же - вульгарно и низменно. Души не было в ней, духовности не было в ней. Нуль. Послушайте Рене Флемминг. Но, опять-таки, никто не сравнится в этой роли с Monserrat Caballe.

I had the tickets and the opportunity to see her in Toronto in 1995. The only thing that could stop me from seeing her happened. My wife went into labour and our daughter was born. It was an auspisious entery into this world for our daughter Daniella and post delivery we played a variety of our favorite music including Cecilia.

I love this interpretation. It's much more adequate to the lyric than a forceful rendition because she's praying to the Moon. Cecilia's dynamic control is really astonishing. I'm sure it's much harder to sing in a soft voice than a loud one.

Интересное камерное исполнение гранд-опера арии/каватины, со специфическими трюками и приёмчиками Чечилии, полностью в её неподражаемом стиле. Получилось задушевно, беседа с лесным божеством при ясной луне. Весьма незабываемо и несравнимо с требующимся театральным исполнением обычного выдающегося колоротурного драматического бель-канто сопрано.
Слов нет...... один восторг!!!!

What many haters didn't understand is that this is mainly a philological operation. Bellini wrote the role of Norma, and then Casta Diva, for a mezzo-soprano.

Well, technically speaking, it was written for Giuditta Pasta who was not a mezzo but a "sfogetto" soprano, which is very mezzo sounding quality, but with an extended soprano range. Pasta's voice has frequently been compared to Callas.

Это авторское исполнение, до Бартоли эту арию в авторском требовании смогли исполнить только две оперные дивы - Джудитта Паста ( партия Нормы именно для неё была написана) и Мария Малибран, которая в своё время перепела кастрата Фаринелли. Никаким знаменитостям эта ария больше оказалась не "по зубам".

A prayer to the great goddess, "personified" by the moon with its silvery white chaste light, deeply beautiful music, composed, amazingly enough by a male, (Vincenczo Bellini), but sung with moving emotion by the greatest women opera singers. Please, do not compare with other singers. This version sung by Cecilia Bartoli is the version that was adapted for the "Malibran" therefore it is not a version for a soprano but for a mezzo-soprano. Cecilia Bartoli loves the "Malibran" and she definitely wanted to sing this version. You must admit that she is excellent! It has nothing to do with what you can hear with Maria Callas or other wonderful singers. It is just different. All of them are wonderful but DIFFERENT.
But she hasnt Malibrans voice and technic..sorry..

@@violetta47 So you have heard Malibrans sing have you. As she died at 28 in the early 19th century I do wonder just where you heard her. As for Bartoli, she has the greatest techinque of any soprono since the great Supervia, who died in 1936 or so.

Honestly, it bothers me deeply that many singers do not respect NORMA as the monumental and titanic piece of art that it is, for a long time I considered Bartoli''s "Casta Diva" a petulance, nevertheless I just made peace with it thanks to this comment. She just wanted to sing it as a "Cantinela" and it sounds really sweet.

This touches me so deeply. Her singing is so controlled and not over the top unlike some others. She understands this.
Technic and interpretation aside, Bartoli's rendition greatly pleases the ear.

She simply does not sing in the UK often enough. I heard her do Norma at the Edinburgh Festival 3 years ago, it was worth the trip from Ireland to go. She is one of the most unassuming divas of this generation; she also did a concert in Dublin several years ago which was stunning, debate all you like I know when she sings it is worth the trek. Her voice is the instrument of an angel.

This is so much better than the soprano version - which tends to be a bit screechy. The mezzo version really brings out the tenderness and spirituality of the aria.

It is obvious that this is not the way Bartoli would sing the aria in a theatrical performance of "Norma" . It's an alternative interpretation, much more inward, giving precedence to the emotions. It is done for listening from a CD, so she had the luxury to be able to experiment, and to eliminate the need for voice projection which in the theatre would be indispensable in order to be heard from all seats. The result is quite fascinating.
+irmar Yes, it's very soft and with a slightly slower tempo but it's not unpleasant.
Entirely agree with irmar and must add that this is a private cry for help to the Moon and the only way it should be sung, were it not for performance necessities in a large theatre. To be listened to in private. The caressing qualities of this voice and controlled articulation makes it incomparable. Emotional intimacy is what it conveys and what is meant by the music.
This is how she sang it at the EIF and it worked beautifully. The Festival Theatre is not La Scala or the Met obviously.
