That boy could make a fortune pitching toys, cookies, anything. Dripping in cuteness. Anyway, a frightfully good bit of fortune Dave helping like he is. The diesel tank and now the anchor thingy. Awesome. Dave is the man! Andy (and Melissa) , you're slowly but surely smoothing out a lot of rough spots and making them shine.
Great episode!!! As funny as your unexpected dunking was (we’ve all done it!) it’s worth paying attention to how slowly you move through the water with full waterproofs on. One begins to realise that shouting at the poor sod in the water to swim for the wildly thrown lifebuoy is easier said than done. Hope the modified stem head fitting & new genoa work beyond expectations.
Melissa showed perfectly how to measure the sail 👌. Most boat owners have probably taken a bath involuntarily, me from the deck when I was going to reach a bottle that had fallen into the water, my stomach pulled me down..🙄..😂😂!
Clicking away after a few seconds ! Good lord some people have absolutely no taste. Have always watched every second of your hard work on editing. Ever since the very beginning with steel melody and you dashing off to work. Absolutely love the presentations Melissa is doing to camera, very clear and professional. Can’t wait for the first of her new boat tour enterprise. Excellent episode thank you all.
It's fascinating to see how many exacting measurements are required for a new headsail - full marks to Melissa for explaining it so well! I built my first kayak 65 years ago, but got very damp whilst learning how to launch it into the surf on Portsmouth beach !
I know nothing about sailing but have observed on many rebuild videos that there is never a backing plate on the underside of any metalwork on the boat. In most cases just bolted through with a fairly insubstantial washer. Surely, at the very least there should be a wooden plate to spread the stress over a larger area. A worrier from Suffolk 😱
Andy Pandy has a paddle, then he gets himself in a muddle. Thank goodness you capsized in a Marina where there is little current. A good advert for Sailing PPE. As always Stay Safe.
Another great episode Andy & Melissa. Sail measurement was so clear . Might be worth checking there is no core in the area the bolts for the anchor roller go through. If there is, perhaps drill out and re-epoxy the holes before re-fitting the bolts, or if necessary replace any soft core with glass / epoxy. P&N
Yes! I’ll double check that and make some hefty spreader plates and if there is acorns drill it out and backfill with thickened epoxy. Good shout. Hope you’re both well.
Great video really enjoyed it. So much got done in a short space of time. Jack was doing great without falling in. Andy splash. lol. Keep well and safe James.
I have worked in a lot of tight spots, i don't envy the position or the spot you had to work in to get that anchor guard off. You have to be a real contortionist to do it. You guys are amazing, keep it up I'm enjoying the ride. I also like when you talk about the locations your visiting. Thanks for bringing a smile to an old man face.
Hi Andy, I worked on a three masted schooner and when i started there, it was a surprise they filled their anchor chain holes with cement. Meaning, constant banging of an anchor by solid water is what you want to avoid at all cost. So your set up got a lot better! But: making two solid and heavy pins for longer passages is a good addition in my opinion. You still want it absolutely immobile, not just "hard to reach your hull" in heavier seas. And that's no weak point when you make it a tight and snug fit.
Every boatie should do that occasionally jump in with their wet weather and safety gear, tests the gear tests the wearer, and yu always learn something, like how hard it can be to get out of the water in a marina. The docks are not built with steps.
It’s always Dad who falls in the water. I was sailing happily in my new 9 foot sailing dinghy and my father wanted to show me how it was done. A gust of wind , Dad grabbed the tiller, pulling to him and of course over we went. Into 5 feet of sandy water. Most my dear father’s exploits marine wise ended in near disaster. He loved boats but boats , were to Dad , dangerously unstable platforms likely to tip him and anyone with him into the wavey stuff.😮
Thanks for showing your swim trip😂. You should leave the canoeing thing to your son. He knows it better than the father👍. Interesting and good rebuild of the anchor rail. Will be exciting how it turns out. Have a great time you four.🤗
Loved the episode that's bath night sorted I did that once racing a friend across a lake he stopped before the banking I didn't hence the soaking and I couldn't swim well nothing wrong with the video very informative about the measurements and bow roller well done 😊😊
Andy FYI when melissa came on to measure the sail after your opening speech there was no audio for me. Then i realised she was only coming through my left earphone. I normally only wear one earphone so i can hear when family call etc. Wouldnt want you to lose any youtube quality points over non stereo audio
Oh! That’s our bad. Our radio mics are a pair and one is LEFT and the other is RIGHT and we forgot to centralise them in the edit because on the laptop you can’t tell.
It will be great to have the stem fitting modified to fit a more modern anchor. One thing I would suggest is getting roller with a chain groove in it so that the chain does not roll when you retrieve it on the windlass. Have you done anything about converting your icebox thermostat to digital?
Our new anchor is a brand new modern Mantus. I’ve discussed the idea of a chain groove with Dave but our rollers are solid bronze so we’ll keep what we have for now and maybe swap the roller at a later date. Dave is doing the stainless work, I’ll deal with the roller some other time. But I agree it would be a nice modification to do.
@@SailingMelodyhard rubber rollers are less than $25. Lexmark delving less than $90. Marithane lifetime warranty rollers less than $130. They all cause less wear on the chain and galvanizing.
Dear Sailing Melody family. 👍👌👏 2) This was clearly no accident! It simply was a neccassary stress test for a kid's kajak and a safety test for an adult's life jacket. 😁 ;-) 3) Congratulations 🎉 for getting the kajak, Jack. It's great to see that you are able to use your muscles a bit. Rowing is a really good fitness exercise (and a lot of fun too). Dave is a master in his trade and I'm sure, that the new respectively modified bowsprit anchor holding device will be as fabulous as the new stainless steel Diesel tank is. I just remembered when you fitted in the new bow sprit that you fabricated for Steel Melody. Please don't get me wrong but I still miss this great boat. By the way: Any news about what is happening to/with it? Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
