What IS Pete Doing?/Life After the Tally Ho Project With Sampson Boat Co.

- After a long stint on the Tally Ho project with Sampson Boat Co and an even longer stint taking a hiatus from appearing on camera, I've struck out on my own to let people know what, indeed, I have been doing! In this video I take you along on a 9 day work trip to Bristol Bay Alaska. On which I join a group of five other stellar shipwrights from Port Townsend Wa to do some "rough and tumble" annual maintenance on a pair of commercial fishing vessels.
Accompanying this video is a short slide-show at the end to answer that age old question, "Hey Pete, what are you doing?!"
My intention with this TH-cam channel is to share my passions of boat building, woodworking, timber framing, and troubleshooting through the various projects I work on at my boat shop and at my off-grid property. I hope this channel can serve as both an educational and entertaining platform for this audience, as well as a way for me to build community and meet and learn from others along the way.

I have never forgotten your presence and impact on the Tally Ho story. We have missed you enormously. So good to see you looking so well and content with life. So pleased for you.
+1

Ditto, always liked and admired Pete
@@wildnotion Exactly, so glad to have found this!
Great to see you Pete. You were our favorite at Tally Hoe and sad when you left. Hope this channel works out for you and I'll be watching!
I think we all miss Pete. Whatever this turns out be, I'm here for it.
Can’t count the times I wondered about Pete. Good to see him happy and healthy. Great video for getting out of the gate! Keep it up!
On Tally Ho Pete was clearly a rock star among rock stars! I'm really glad to see him back and narrating and all that. Bravo!
I love how tally ho is finished and Pete’s channel starts. Awesome.
He used to be so shy and mad when Leo filmed him. Now he's doing his own videos. Happy to see the growth in his life. Welcome back!
"What are you doing Pete?" 😊
@@oldschoolman1444 Longboarding! 😅😂😊
"Hey, Pete. Whatcha doing?" Now we know. So happy to see you again. You're such a mench.
mench? I've never heard that before. "Mensch" means human in German though, does that have any connection?
@@Bassalicious I believe it's a Yiddish expression for a solid, stand up kind of guy.
Yiddish is basically german, so it’ll mean the same thing:) Mench = Mensch, which means person. Calling someone a ‘person’ could imply something similar, even in english
@@porkchop955 Ah, interesting! Thanks.

Someones got to build the Chevys Pete, that's what the world runs on. Take your time, post when you can. We'll all still be here when you do.
World runs on Chevys? There is a world beyond USA, sir.

I can hardly explain how great it feels to see Pete working on a wooden boat again! And cheers to the other shipwrights.
I can't say we have missed any TH-camr more than you, Pete. So glad you are looking well and doing what you love. You are such an inspiration. Looking forward to following your journey and, as a keen woodworker, watching and learning from your incredible skills. Thanks for the effort.
So THAT's what you're doin'.
Nice to see you again Pete.
Best of luck to the new channel, I'll be watching.
PETE! havnt see you in a long time. I was unhappy that you didn't make a cameo with Leo when they launched. You made such a HUGE HUGE contribution. You're fantastic shipwright and been to hell and back in your life. Kudos to you.
Pete you were a huge part of Tally Ho. Missed you so much, hopefully we will hear why you left. Great to see your channel!!!
@@dave_from_moI plan on intercepting Leo on his way to England to get him drunk and get the story. I've been dying to know.
Same i was hoping to c u in the TH launch
I think there was a still image of Pete in the launch video, when highlighting everyone who worked on the boat, so that's something!
So glad you decided to share part of your life Pete...we missed you... great start ...can't wait for the next one
Hey Pete what are you doing? :-) Be careful! i don't know if you realize the demand for this kind of content and how much we all missed you when you left Tally Ho. This has the potential to grow into a monster. But i'm so here for it!

He’s got almost 20,000 subscribers overnight. Those numbers are rarely seen!
You probably didn't realize that you would get over 2500 comments, and you will probably need a week to read them all. If you do manage to read this one, for the past 2 years I have been wondering what happened to you after you worked on Tally Ho. Also, I was surprised that Leo never gave you any shout-out when he launched his boat, since you were instrumental in helping him build it. Anyway, I want to see more of your wood working videos, and I expect others want more, also. Now you will need to find that sweet spot and balance between doing the work and editing the videos. Good Stuff, Pete! Good Stuff!
There were reasons
This is exactly the type of content TH-cam needs. Just real life work and crafting and making.
100% No more mornings wasted on time sucking Tiktok for me. 😊
The Tally Ho spin off that I didn’t know I needed. Good to hear from you Pete, keep up the good work!
No need to apologise. Your first video production quality and voiceover would put a lot of established TH-camrs to shame ! 👍👍
.... yup .... only a few minutes in ... already got can tell the effort ... cool
Amen. One hell of a first effort.
Absolutely agree. Really enjoyed seeing what Pete is upto now and will certainly watch more
Great video. No need to get too polished either, keep it real!
seriously. The beggining showing the reality of old, forgotten boats was sad and amazing!
PETE!!!
I, being the old woman that got caught up in the Tally Ho rebuild, have been worried about you! So happy you are doing well and still using your awesome skill to bring other boat souls back to life. You are an excellent craftsman and we miss you! You look great and it was wonderful to hear from you! Thanks for popping your head out for us.
am I witnessing the birth of the next best boat building channel?
Best of luck Pete. During your Tally Ho days I always admired your craftsmanship. Keep up your video's We all will tune in
I'm so glad TH-cam recommended this to me. You were my favorite person who worked on the Tally Ho
The algorithm took 3 days to find me. I am happy it did. You have been missed from our world. Good to see you and 'watcha doin' Pete?'
Same here
My brother specifically gave me a call for this. No Algorithm needed :-)
4 days for me and here I am😁
9 days for me!😢
11 days for me... better late than never...
No feet Pete! What a legend. Haven't seen this man since he left Tally Ho. Greetings and salutations from Ireland
First couple of minutes of this I'm thinking "great to see Pete again, shame he's so stilted in this unfamiliar role of presenter", then 2:09 and I'm like "there he is!". You were missed Pete, hope we get more of the real you than the slick presenter character. Hating the camera is enormously endearing, long may it continue 😊. Or if you decide you don't want this hassle after all and just want the boats, well it was a pleasure watching.
Go Pete! So happy to see what you're working on!
Hi Pete, keep it raw and real!!!!!
Pete, it was a sad day when you left the Tally Ho project, I always got a laugh from your sense of humor. I'm glad we get to see more than just fine boat building. This real-life story was interesting and fun. My only suggestion is put out videos at your own pace, keep enjoying life, nothing sucks out the joy of watching You Tube videos while having to listen to some content provider complaining about how hard it is to put out a video once a week. I look forward to your story telling, expertise and your knowledge. Hey Pete! what' cha doing?
Here for the Hack-n-Wack TV.
Invaluable boatbuilding history in the making.
BZ.
Subbed
Won't name names , but not long back a TH-camr was threatening to stop posting vids & he had over 20 thousand subs . . because the sub count was't high enough for him in opinion to give up his day job . . he said that the diesel he used to start up his collection of busted arse old trucks & tractors for folks supposed joy to watch . . was't cheap that few drops of fuel , some ungrateful idiots out there
Only a few minutes in Pete, but looking good. Stick with it many Tally Ho guys will follow you I’m sure 👍
This video is really the meat and potatoes of boat building served up by none other than Pete Stein,America’s favorite shipwright. No fluff,no bs,nothing but what you need to see which is the reality of the boat building trade.Great vid.
Welcome back Pete. Like seeing an old friend again.
Pete, so nice to see you again! Well done! ❤
It's a privilege to see your work and life Pete, thanks for letting us in.
Welcome back Pete, shipwrighting without the BS. I,m tuned in.
Just found you . Moving forward! LOOKS like the wooden fleet is in great hands! Live long & prosper.... will be watching.
Best first video ever !
You will have ten times the subscriber count that already exist! This will be great to watch. Thanks in advance for the fine work.
You've got B roll. Your production level is already in the top 90%
Edit: and time lapse and a voiceover. You're killing it dude.
Yep. I’ve been doing dialog editing for films and video games for about 15 years, and it all sounds fine. Maybe not perfect, but I understood everything and that’s what counts. Great job dude, glad to see you.
Pete, you are a talented cinematographer. If you made this video without much effort, you've got natural talent. I loved the video. I could smell the timber and pine tar. I felt the comradery. Please continue!
Yeah wow. This is great! Keep em coming Pete!
(also currently 57k views, not bad for a first effort!!)
You have tapped into something remarkable, a genre if you will, that has not been explored as of yet in the boat community. This Old House combined with Dirty Jobs, but with a more selfless and obviously nautical theme. I'll watch every episode!
Well said! Agree 100%
Good to see you again, Pete. I’ll be watching. Don’t worry about super quality TH-cam videos. Just be you.😎👍
By the way, this one is well done.
Traditional wood boat repairs in the modern times. I absolutely loved this video. Also thank you so very much for the time you spent on Tally Ho. I am excited for wherever this new journey carries you.
Great to have you back.
Oh the algorithm gods have shined upon us. PETE!! Welcome back to the TH-cam world!! Great to see you again starting this new venture! Don’t worry about video quality, etc. I’m sure whatever you give us will be super interesting like this vlog! You have made my day (or year for that matter). Yahoo!!!
Pete! Stoked to see your face pop up this morning. Glad to see you started a channel. Big fans of you and your excellent craftsmanship. I’m fairly local and every time I go to PT I hope to run into to you and shake your hand. Good fortunes to you.
Omg. A blast from the past. I've asked through the comments on Leo's Channel, where were you but there was never a reply. I figured there must have been some falling out. You were such a big part of those early phase of Tally Ho and when you were no longer there and no longer mentioned, you were sorely missed. Its lovely to see you back and having your own channel. I'm a new subscriber. Your talent, skills and personality will shine through. All the best Pete. To you and your gang. Greetings from Malaysia.
Nice having you back!
good to see a man in his happy place creating art from big chunks of wood
We've missed you, Pete! Looking forward to follow your journey here!❤
Thx for doing this Pete.
Go Pete! You were a superstar on Tally Ho
Hey, Pete, a big hello from France. We missed you so much. It's great to see you in a good place.
You deserve this Pete. Stay consistent and make something wonderful from this
Pete’s back!!! Love it!
Missed you Pete. Good to see you again.
Good to see you again Pete, missed you on Tally Ho. Subscribed as soon as I saw it was you ❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
GREAT,GREAT TO HAVE CAUGHT UP WITH YOU AGAIN PETE!!! THIS FROM NEAR THE SOUTHERN TIP OF AFRICA!!! YOU HAVE MADE YOURSELF FAMOUS! A VERY TENACIOUS, SKILLED AND ALL ROUND NICE GUY!!!
The timing of this could not be better.
As Leo's channel moves from shipwrighting to tourism, up pops Pete and I can get back to being amazed by the skills of the shipwrights.
Great timing Pete.
😂 The pain in your eyes as you find yourself talking to a camera once again brings my heart so much joy. 😂😂 Good to see you and your work again.
Pete ! I just cannot tell you just how thrilled I as well as others who’ve watched you on the Tally-Ho build to have found you also starting your own channel 👍 My grandfather was a seabee in the navy, a shipwright as well as an amazingly talented man who had built his home as well as everything in it, I am now 71 and have been a woodworker most of my life as well, Your work on the Tally-Ho was outstanding and instrumental in its success. Thanks Pete, keep your videos coming and consider having people like myself help you achieve your dreams as well. Good luck my friend!
you go Pete, finest kind. This will work for you.
It was nice to see Leeani finally getting some recognition for all their hard work ;)
😂 Leeani is definitely underrated for their work 😂
omg it's Pete! instant sub!
Great to see you Pete it's been a long time since you left the crew from Tally Ho ! Wishing you nothing but success! Alberta Canada Cheers!
The many years of wooden boat nerd that I am asks that you always talk in detail about the tools, materials, woods, and techniques you use! I love it.
Hi Pete. Furniture maker and boatbuilder for mahy years, 82yrs now, so watching
real craftsman videos like Tally Ho and now yours remind me of old times. Keep them coming when you can. Best wishes from Scotland .
Good to c u Pete (& crew). I'll b watching. Take care all😊
Well done Pete. Keep going!
That was one of the best you tube video's I've seen in a long time...Thank you and keep them coming.
I like this “real boat repair “. To me it’s more interesting than building a yacht.
I live in a small town. I love the small waves people give each other while driving. Sometimes community and hard work is all we have. 😃
Hey Pete it's good to see you again! Once the Tally Ho was built, my interest level dropped, it's not the sailing that interests me so much, it's the building. You and your buddies work quality and work ethic are amazing.
Wow, real ship building at it's finest! Thank you for sharing this priceless and often overlooked craft.
This thing has all the attributes of awesomeness.
Great to see you doing your thing missed you on tallyo
Good to see you again. 21:28 You were missed
Thank you, Pete, for creating another watch worthy video hopefully series where we can watch you and some mates use your amazing skills as woodworkers.
Welcome back Pete. It's good to see you on TH-cam again. I appreciate you giving us a look into the life of a real working shipwright. If I could request any content from your new channel it would be to keep showing the tools and techniques that are still just as good today as they were 200 years ago. There's something very satisfying about seeing things built by hand. We may live in the era of computers and plastic, but it's nice to know that Pete & his crew are out there doing real craftsmanship with their own hands.
Nice to see you back on TH-cam Pete, great to see real boat repairs!
I bet Simon was like 'look at the size of them cleats!'
I never hit a subscribe button so fast! I'm glad to know what you've been doing.
WOOHOO Pete!! For your first video, you did a perfect job making it. I can't wait to see more of what you are doing.
Nice to see you again Pete. Missed you over the past few years since you left Tally Ho
Ma che gioia rivederti Pete!!! E sopratutto così concentrato e pieno di iniziativa e voglia di condividere. Continua, io ci sono!
Great Pete!
I've watched every Sampson Boat video, and always thought that you were a most genuine guy. You are also a perfectionist and master craftsman. So pleased to see you doing your own channel.
God speed!
Good luck!
and thank you. John
Go for it Pete! Full sail ahead! ⛵
Good to see you again Pete. I had always wondered where you got off to. You were one of my favorite parts of the Tally Ho build. Look forward to more of your own stuff.
Whoever did the editing did a great job . So glad you are sharing.
Nice job Pete!
My life has been lacking in Pete content. Thanks, man!
Welcome back. You have a lot to offer that can't be found anywhere else. Keeping it real!
Yeah great to see again Pete and I think what ever you create folks will enjoy I for one cannot wait for the next episode
"I am after all, a simple wood butcher".. Lol, welcome back Pete, we missed ya
Pete is slinging some really good looking big wood on that barge….
Welcome back Pete. Looking forward to more, whenever it comes.
Yah Pete,
Welcome back.
Working on a piece of art is one thing......I much appreciate seeing the "real" work that keeps an industry going. I'll be here as long as you are.
Yep, I’ll be here as long as you are !
Nailed it Pete, beautifully done.
Sat watching with my wife, so rapt to see you again.
All the best from Melbourne, Australia
Thanks for this insight, mate! Your contributions to the Tally Ho rebuild were some of my most enjoyable videos of the project!
Great video! Keep posting 👍
So glad to see this! What a great job for a first video. These types of channels usually start off rough and then find their way with time, but this was a little better than rough. Definitely keep going and know that we'd love to see whatever you make. FAILURE TO TAKE RISKS MAY RESULT IN TERMINATION.
Great to see you back and see what down to earth practical commercial shipwright work actually involves.
Welcome back Pete. Look forward to future videos.
No feet Pete is back! Welcome back Pete!!!!!
Great video - keep it up!
