    I started with these kind of radios too... well my start isnt that "deluxe" :D I have my fun with a lot of GRUNDIGs like CityBoy, MicroBoy, YachtBoy etc... mostly because of these rather "stupid" names. This Nordmende (i have a few tube and transistor-sets) is truly a nice addition for any collector!

      Yes, I agree. Really a lot of features packed into such a small radio for the time. The US version goes up to 108 MHz. Also, most if not all Globetraveler Jr's have the dark green/black "caviar" colored case. I'm not sure if they officially sold multiple colors for radios destined for the US.

    Nice find! Haha, I actually like the "cheap" transistorized radios of the seventies. Build quality got somewhat worse at times, but ICs and PCB connectors really tidied up the designs. Really reliable and easy to work on - but if an IC fails it's often not that easy to find. Usually it's the power amp ICs. I had such fail twice. For a LOEWE i found a drop-in replacement. On a Nordemende, I had to bodge in a modern chip on a perfboard. Works though.
    Grundig also used ICs, but they had discrete Ge (AC 128 etc.) output stages until around 1980!

    Nice radio, great work! I wonder, should that tone control flex and bend the components attached below it? Somehow I doubt this is correct. - I see the Norwegian factory Radionette must have watched the construction of these radios closely (imagine it must be this way round :) ), several models of the time (Explorer, Kurér 1001among others) are nearly identical in case construction. My Explorer (great radio!) once fell on the floor, and the bottom plate broke into around 20 small and bigger plastic pieces.. I at last got a junk radio to take parts from.. It then got the name "exploder"..

    • @electronicsoldandnew

    The AM dial pointer looked like it didn't go all the way to the left Is the problem with the tuning cap as simple as just moving the pointer a bit to the left on the string?
    I was like screaming "Dont remove the main board, remove the battery compartment and the speaker" ☺
    These radios are buildt around the Main board. So it's almost impossible to remove.

    "I" forgive you for going with this one after "promising" to do the tube (valve) radio next, but it appears that "Murphy" hasn't. You really have a number of challenges in this one. I am interested to find out how you resolve them. Especially the tuning capacitor issue. I have been trying to visualize just what could be stopping the capacitor from continuing to close so that it is fully meshed. So far no luck. That entire tuning system might be worthy of a video of its own.
    Is there a pictorial of how the unit is assembled? That might help a lot with the tuning mechanism if there is one.
    You did a fantastic job with the bottom plastic battery compartment! I had a suggestion that I was going to make, but it turned out that you had a method of your own that worked wonders.
    After you resolve the tuning capacitor meshing issue, I feel that an alignment is really necessary. That is something I am interested in seeing on this radio. It will probably be very straightforward to perform, but still, I would like to see what I think will be a considerable improvement.
    Although it is a rare occurrence, it is still possible that you could have a defective Germanium transistor. If you do, what are your plans for replacement? I would imagine that you would have to make some component value changes to make things work properly.
    You know, with that connector on the bottom that was used in a vehicle, you could make an adaptor that you could "plug" the radio into that would provide coverage throughout your entire house!
    I appreciate your sharing these videos with us! Thank you very much!

    • @electronicsoldandnew
      @electronicsoldandnew  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The tuning cap definitely promises to be a challenge. The service manual is quite detailed, but not on the mechanical aspects.
      If a transistor is defective, I think I can get some from the supplier in Ireland.
      This one will definitely require an alignment.

    I was wondering, when you described the car connector and the switch that would be pushed when the radio was inserted into the car holder, you mentioned the antenna as well as power and speakers. It appears that the mini whip you connect to the side antenna connector works independently from that bottom connector, so you can always connect a better antenna to the side, correct? We had a Blaupunkt portable in the 70's about that side with a car sled adapter to fit under the dash. Huge thing but it worked in a similar way. The sound of that thing was also awesome. This Nordmende really has a humongous speaker and will sound fantastic too.

    Nice radio! It truly squeezed to the maximum the limited performance of early germanium transistors.
    Btw: that abrupt sound change you atribute to the tuning capacitor shorting, it does not seem to affect the other bands? If so, to me it looks like the IF amp or the converter is "taking off" at that point, I mean: it starts a spurious uncontrolled oscillation, by internal feedback favoured by that capacitor setting picking up some internal signal.
    Could be caused by misalignment.

    • @electronicsoldandnew
      @electronicsoldandnew  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think I saw that the two white plastic gears at top and bottom of that tuning mechanism have cracked around the screw holes. If that is so, I use to use steel wire windings around it ( .1 mm), e.g. the steel where tiny springs are made of, and a two component epoxy in the crack and on the sanded surface with the wire. If you have a good stretchless polyester sawing wire it could also do the job.Acetone is absolute the best for degreasing, IF this plastic can stand it of course, but I think so.

But I have a Globetraveler from 1965 which was totally dead due to small singal audio caps... and also for the future, if you'll get to restore one, the pesky ITT Schaub Lorenz Touring Series had some oily cracked caps of some 10-100 nF hidden like that as well. The Touring 30, 40, 50, 60. The 70 and up used better ones that stood the test of time. By the way: Can somebody explain to this noob why output transformers are a good thing (like "sound very good") in a transistorised amp?
    They were in designs until the late 1960's and then disappeared. Just because of the weight (and cost), or did someone invent a better power amp design?

    • @electronicsoldandnew
      @electronicsoldandnew  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The transformer version was definitely more expensive to produce, so that was a factor. The sound is “fuller” and more harmonious in my opinion, and In definitely not an audiophile 😊

    • @westelaudio943
      @westelaudio943 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The later, (pseudo-)complimentary output stage design is definitely more efficient and has a more broadbanded response, as the small transformer in a classic push-pull is pretty much a high pass filter far into the audible range. It's a matter of taste though, and the latter is easier to work on. In tube curcuits, the transformers are much bigger so that's less of a problem, and it adds some (pleasant) coloration to the sound.
