  • Stanton Moore shares some incredible wisdom on the importance of Charley Wilcoxon in our Drumtrainer Online school.
Charley Wilcoxon's book "modern rudimental swing solos for the advanced drummer" had a profound impact on the jazz world and Stanton Moore shares how Philly Joe Jones was known for carrying the book everywhere with him or how Kenny Washington taught him to approach the book.
Stanton Moore goes into much more depth about his playing, how to get that real swampy New Orleans groove, how to improve your feel in less than 5 minutes with just singles and how for the price of a Budweiser (better beers are available) you can have a 5 minute lesson with one of the greats that will last a lifetime.
    And that's just the interview.
Stanton recorded a monster lesson on New Orleans second line, Cissy Strut, Buzz Rolls and a ton of other great insight into his playing and approach behind the kit, which you can find on drumtrainer.online. It was an absolute pleasure hosting such a fine gentleman!

I'm pretty much self taught and back in the day I picked that book (and a couple others of his) and I put the time in. Glad to hear decades later I had the common sense... Stanton is always great to listen to, everything he say's is sincere and the real deal from the heart - respect! Speaking of Stanton I think besides Modern Drummer I was at the Hollywood Custom Drum Show, at one of the early shows and there's this guy playing laying down the sickest greasiest grooves, I'm like who's that?! "Oh that's Stanton Moore," I'm like gonna be keeping an eye on this cat for a long time; been a fan ever since. Great vid! Peace

I like that the drums sound like proper breathing drums not through any filters or mixing . So many lies on the Internet .

I think they didn’t turn off his vocal mic so the drums sound trashy

Probably fine for backbeats and accents, but I think it's way too muddy for trying to demonstrate the kind of jazzy rudimental figures in the book. I think it sounds too messy for that and not like the crisp snare sounds of the jazz players mentioned.
