      Yes! I think this is something that we 'modern' photographers should work on. I think he either had a vision or a passion to experiment whereas most of us are concerned with sharpness and high dynamic range

      Agreed
      I did apprenticeship on film in the ‘90s for a big studio and but personally I pushed my film to max for low light .. so I never had a problem to crop empty space crop a dodge n burn sometimes too..
      This man’s work is exceptional
      I can’t believe I only learnt of his work in the last month or two…
      Inspirational to say the least

    You made a lot of excellent points throughout the video. i definitely learned something from you. i know New York, London, Tokyo, and other popular are an intrigue to take photos but I think places like those have already been done. Its like we have maybe seen it all. This is a great challenge for you to create from your own city and country and bring it to the forefront. I’m filipino too, and I hope I can do some street photography when I next visit there. Subscribed!

    Fan Ho FTW! Going back to my old photos and finding some great (heavily cropped) images hidden within them has shown me that I really need to be shooting with a longer lens to make the most of these shots. Getting closer won't help; I really want to flatten the perspective of my images, this is why I've been feeling dissatisfied with what I've been creating lately. This video has also made me realise some of the great photographic opportunities I have been looking at without realising. Thank you for another great vid! :D

    • @KebsCayabyab
      @KebsCayabyab  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good realization! Sometimes we just have to go back and analyze our photos! I think I did the same when I realized I wanted to try a shorter lens/wide focal length.
      Glad the video helps!

    I came across Fan Ho's work about 5 years ago, not long after buying my first camera. My parents were born in 1960s Hong Kong and the photos taken by Fan Ho have a special significance to me. On my first trip to Hong Kong in many years, I made it a point to find a store that sold his books. Carrying those books under my arm and riding the subway (standing) for over an hour both ways wasn't fun, but it was worth it!

      @@KebsCayabyab I only planned to get The Living Theatre but walked away with City of Darkness as well, didn't take a lot of convincing as it's such a good book. I highly recommend City of Darkness, it's a very informative volume on the Kowloon walled city and is full of interviews and photos. The following year, I sent my younger brother to the same shop for Hong Kong Yesterday but only gave him the address of the building, forgot to tell him the exact floor! Needless to say, he wasn't happy having to check every floor!

    first? 😅 Another great video. The first time I knew about Fan Ho's work was the first time I knew that shooting in harshlight isn't that bad. Up to that point I've only heard of people talking about golden hour and such. I didn't really thought about the sense of scale and the use of cropping. This video was helpful. Learned something new.

      I will... in the future! I tried but I think I need to learn 'something'. The 'good' shots that I got are mostly based on 'luck', something that I can't teach. I can do close proximity face to face shots but I'm not willing to 'chase' subjects though like Tatsuo :)

    Tasting the way you are looking at the world, I think Vivian Maier would be good to take a look at.
    Both her personality and the technical artistic ingredients are of great value .-.
    You can have an extra check at her 'selfie' in the mirror of a man walking across the street.
    Then imagine working with that Rolleiflex camera ... anticipating the moment, accurately as possible making the composition, set the lens crispy sharp on the subject/point you want and being able to take only one photograph/no multiple clicks.

      @KebsCayabyab  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I find myself in a sort of love/hate relationship with Fan Ho. I find the overly light and shade, geometric stuff rather too abstract, too cold and lacking in humanity - people are just shapes and objects in a scene, and I don't get a sense of the person or people in the photograph, and the interaction of person and place for me is really important. On the other hand I find some of the double exposure work, and the radical crop things just stunning. The "Japanese sketch" pic at 6.17 is simply breathtaking with its subtlety and composition - you can feel the chill of the mist, smell the air, I can even hear the oars dipping into the water. I want that on my wall.

    • @KebsCayabyab
      @KebsCayabyab  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get you Martin when you said "too abstract, too cold, and lacking in humanity." I tend to agree but at the same time that may be one of the reason why I liked his work. They gravitate towards art rather than social documentary. I think he has a healthy mix of abstract and realistic/documentary style of photography, it's just that I'm more captivated by the 'artistic' and composition-focused side of his work.
      Thanks Martin!

    • @KebsCayabyab
      @KebsCayabyab  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks bro! That's a good thought, a more 'generalist' approach. You rarely hear of 'portrait painter' and 'landscape painter', just painter. There's a form of freedom in not being boxed into a label, but I think there's also a value in segregation in label. A musician would be proud to be called a musician, but most of the time they refer to themselves as 'guitarist', 'singer' etc. I think the key is to be mindful of the label you put to yourself and see if there's any value of even labeling yourself as such.

    Crop and edit your negatives in a darkroom = Genius....
    Crop and edit your files in lightroom = fraud....
    Isn't it weird how we judge what's "real" photography when we have the masters to guide us and apply those same lessons to the way we choose to work....

  • @walkingmanvideo9455

    These photos aren't entirely the photographers doing. The locations and scenes are delivering here. Its the same as a high end fashion shooter, if the model can't pose or look any good, the photo will look boring no matter who the shooter is.
