Wooden spikes are what’s left of poles sunk into the sand which would have tidal nets attached back in the day.

I grew up near a beach, in fact most of my childhood was spent playing or swimming at beaches during the summer holidays. I only swam near the shore and had a massive fear of not seeing the bottom. As I have got older I have stopped swimming at a beaches all together. I stick to the shore. Despite my fear, my favourite subject to paint is beaches. Painting them is so instinctual. I love walking along the shore and soaking in the atmosphere, but I never ever want to swim. Not a fear I need to face, I am happy on the shore. Glad to know I am not the only one who loves looking at, walking on and painting beaches, but avoids the water. People comment regularly how it is strange to love beaches, but never swim in them. Glad to know I am not the only one.

The rusty item on the beach looks like a vintage mangle that was used to squeeze the water from sheets after being washed back in the day.

-central Wisconsin: What a great hike you had! Glad you took time to enjoy the beach walks without feeling pressure to stop and paint. Enjoying the moment is something we all need to be better at. No Creating content, no looking thru a lens, no painting, no work, just be and enjoy your surroundings & getting out in nature, or just were you are at.
…..Just soak in the moment. Good job!!!

If the spikes were in straight rows, they might have been installed as part of an erosion prevention system? I saw something about that on an English watercolorist's channel once.

Sarah, Safety tip,, when you walk in the water with you pack on, you should unbuckle your waist and chest straps. Should you fall in the water you can get out of your pack, and not drown.

So glad you had sensible weather for this leg. Those huge tidal flats are incredible. We don't have that phenomenon here in Australia. Some decades past my husband cut out a photo of Le Mont St Michel out of the newspaper. He kept it pinned on his wall and a couple of years later we actually went there. The tide was out and it was just magical to walk out onto the full extent of the tidal flat and then take photos of the monastery. Just magical.

Just catching up :) Your fear of water isn't necessarily irrational, people get cut off by tides quite often, just ask the RNLI. It might look OK where you are but in front and behind you can come in quicker than you realise! Particularly in the UK with such tidal shifts. I think it's good to listen to your instinct, especially if it's a quickly changing situation. Me and my dad almost got cut off fossil hunting in Whitby. Better safe than sorry!

Also visible on the oblique aerial photographs are aircraft immobilisation poles in the areas of the beach where there are no anti-tank blocks." :)

Hi,another awe inspiring walk taking in the change from rocky coastline to pine forests. Could the spikes in the beach be the remains of an ancient pine trees? Or did they look uniform enough to be part of an ancient settlement? Again, thank you for the journey, looking forward to the last leg of the walk. xx

Okay, fear like You have for water I have for spiders and we definitly don’t have dangerous spiders here (Sweden) and yet I panic so…and shivers oh man, just thinking of them fear most of the time. I can take it if they are outside, but inside…no! Big no no! For You guys living near water with some dangerous creatures in the water I can understand too. But there are people being that scared for water here too,and okay there can be snakes in the water, but they aren’t that dangerous. I’m allergic to bee’s and wasp’s so I have to know if there is any around. Not afraid though, but don’t wanna risk being “caught” by it,
You’re doing a good walk along the coast. It’s many miles now! Hope You have a safe trip home tomorrow!
