When I was a small child we would get very beat up, messy, abused & dirty books at school. We would use brown paper bags to make book covers for them.- exactly the same as you did here - except we could not cover the inside flap with the first page as you did - instead we would cut a piece of paper to glue over the inside of the cover - only getting glue onto the cover & never the book. Then we could use water paints or crayons to decorate the cover we had made - making sure we wrote the title on the outside.I would save paper grocery store bags for weeks before school started to cut up to get the paper I needed.
My Catholic elementary school required us to cover our textbooks with brown-paper covers. My mother always used grocery bags. I had forgotten about that!
Did the same with the paper bags in elementary school, but in college, I found cling wrap on the new books not only kept the cover looking new, (resale value) but also was easier to read the title on the stack of books to be able to grab the correct book in a hurry.
I loved this tutorial. It got me thinking about an old vintage apron I saved from my dear grandmother. Has a few stains, I can work around that & cover one of her cookbooks. How great is that!!! Greatly appreciated.👏👏👏
Genius and gorgeous. A way to remember all my old chairs, curtains etc., long gone, but missed and full of great memories . Well loved☺️ thanks. Will start tomorrow…
I am so glad I found this video. My style is "country cottage", so this will fit right in. I had a couple of lamps that I wanted to raise up, because I didn't want to replace the lamps. I lost my dad raised pigeons all his life and I lost him about 6 years ago. Now, I find everything I need on the internet and don't use books, but I just couldn't get rid any of his books. Books I would never read, like "The six principles of pigeon-keeping". This is the perfect way to raise my lamps , save and display his books. Perfect! Problem solved!
I did a scrapbooking workshop with Donna Downey ( from the US ), oh about 20 years ago, now. We made a fabric covered mini album. Donna used Golden’s white Gesso to adhere the fabric to the thick cardboard cover. The nice thing about it was that firstly there’s no need to pre (chalk) paint to hide any strong colours and more importantly, unlike the pva, the gesso doesn’t soak through the fabric so you keep the lovely cottony feel yet the adhesive properties are just brilliant. The fabric is still perfectly adhered 20 odd years later. It had to be, specifically, the Golden’s brand Gesso, i don’t remember why exactly but I do remember trying to order it in Ireland was super difficult at the time. But totally worth it.
Your tutorials are the BEST. One of the few that do not leave me with questions. I can feel a question bubbling up while you're working away (pun intended) ;) and then I laugh because you always answer it. I also feel immediately like doing the project...and confident that I can. Cannot wait to scope pillow cases and old dresses or fabrics for this purpose and of course furniture too. Thank you!
In elementary school we had to cover our used textbooks to protect them for the next user. This was back when life moved more slowly and textbooks didn’t need to be updated annually.
I have done books similar to this, many years ago when I really didn't know what I was doing, and for that period of my life it was okay. Today, I would not be happy with them! This is a wonderful tutorial on the best way to approach it. Like you, I'm pretty much a perfectionist so I LOVE the time you take to talk about and demonstrate the technique. I also like understanding why a wrinkle or bubble might appear as it dries when there hadn't been one while working on it. These are the little secrets to success! I would like to try to shabby it up a bit so I might try that. Thank you for sharing!
TIP: you don’t need to waste expensive paint like Annie Sloan on the cover. You actually don’t need to paint the cover at all. Just glue the fabric straight onto an unpainted book cover. The BEST results happen when you let each stage dry in between as this will be less fiddle and less messy. Love the fabric you chose here Jonathon.
He also explains that paint will mattify (my term, not his) the shine from the book cover; at times that shiny-ness could be seen through the lighter parts of the new cover fabric.
@@myrmaad Yes, he went over the reasons and he did explain why..His explanation made perfect sense. I agree with him too, it's a brilliant idea. If you're gluing light colored fabric over a dark colored book, the dark color will show through the lighter fabric. His technique of painting the cover white prior to covering is similar to priming a wall / using Kiltz on a dark colored wall before painting it a light color. It's so the dark colored paint won't show through.
I absolutely love that fabric… I just watched your video on putting that beautiful fabric on the amazing clothes closet.. so beautiful and that bowl you have the glue in is insanely awesome.. ❤❤❤ Thank you

I would add a ribbon or torn strip of fabric into a nice.simple. bow with a large hand made Victorian themed or Art Deco tag. Perhaps with a quote from a periodcAuthor. I ADORE William Morris Fabric. Just beautiful and timeless. He designed for the ages! Thank you for the tutorial.💚
Excellent tutorial, and what a gorgeous piece of fabric! I do a lot of decoupage and furniture painting, and just recently got into junk journaling. I love the idea of fabric covered books for staging, and even to use as risers for vases and photo frames. Thank you for sharing this great tutorial. I just subscribed, so I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
Thank you so much for subscribing and welcome to my channel it’s really good to have you here and you have some great ideas for Fabric decoupage i’m sure at some point I will give it a go happy creating 😊❤️🙏
Really special fabric, I am in love with the colors and design! A friend used William Morris designed wallpapers in her restored Victorian home, so familiar with the name! Book covering with fabric absolutely beautiful!
I often cover junk journals in paper but I’ll be doing some in fabric. Up til now I’ve made removable embroidered covers. Very clever how you managed to change the endpapers from red to white halfway through the video 😉😄
So glad I found this idea! I have some very old fabrics collecting dust that I could use! Love William Morris! Fell in love when visiting the Victoria and Albert museum in London. I was thinking you could also use gold gilding wax to edge the papers. Thank you! ♥️
Loved this Jonathan. I’m away from all my treasures for a few months. This tutorial made me want to find a piece of fabric and book and not wait for my goodies. That fabric was gorgeous! Toni in California

I’d cover a canvas ( or two) with that gorgeous vintage doona cover fabric with the birds , some nice wooden trim around the edges to make a faux frame …lovely image in my mind 😀

I did wonder what was the point in painting it first. Personally I wouldn't. Love the idea though
I would imagine that if the fabric is very light and the book cover is dark, then it makes sense. Otherwise, I'd just skip the painting part.
