All are among my favorites. They were big when I was kindergarten- third grade. Maybe one reason I loved them so much was because as a little kid I could mimic their falsettos.
The music, soul, and rock of the 60s, 70s and early 80s even rock in the 50s will never be duplicated. Those like me who grew up in the 60s and 70s were so lucky to grow up with such wonderful incredible bands and music that will always live on for long after we are gone. I am a Rocker at heart but I love soul music such as this great tune. So lucky...
@@Fritzw75 yeah me too I remember going to do schools and dance clubs in R&B and soul that’s how come we have generation X saw Rolls-Royce in concert they were fantastic but 0207 my love for rock ‘n’ roll I remember when Aerosmith rocks came out
I spent my tweens and teens with great songs like this. The Stylistics also had many hits. I sang their Betcha by Golly Wow to my now 20 yr old daughter when she was tiny. I still tear up when I hear it. Worth a listen, for sure.
Yes “Oh Girl,” must be next, another classic, but one of their little known gems and one of my favorites, but talk about sad “The Coldest Days of My Life.”
Here is why the song still works: 1) every dude has felt heartbreak, not as extreme as this, but enough to identify; 2) every woman is convinced that she is wonderful enough to have had this impact on an ex. Plus, it is masterful - vocals are transcendent.
I’ve experienced this level of heartbreak and more…..this classic song by The Chi Lites and He Stopped Loving Her Today by George Jones say it all on this subject for us guys imo
Now we’re talking! Time to get into the Chi Lites, Delfonics, Blue Magic, the Moments, The Stylistics, Dramatics, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Intruders and the list goes on!
I was mainly into rock music in the 70`s but my guilty secret was soul and motown. i loved all the bands you listed and really got into the Philly sound as well . I saw many big rock bands live but one of my favourite concerts was the Stylistics .....saw them in a small venue in England but they were magical .
In the 70's, top 40 radio had the Chi Lites, the Four Tops, the Staple singers with Pops when Mavis was a baby, The Allman Brothers, Doobies, Chicago, Led Zep, America, singer-songwriters like Elton, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Carole King, and funky acts like Dr. Hook and Black Oak Arkansas, ALL ON THE SAME STATION. When you listened to music, you were exposed to everything. It was a much more fulfilling experience than we get today. I'm so happy for you that you are getting to feel what we had then,.....Cheers!!!!!
Those Chicago boys "The Chi-Lites" had a winner in this song "Have You Seen Her (1971)." My goodness I was a 17-year-old junior in high school back then. This was a monster hit back then. Now that I am 68 years old and a senior citizen. The song captures great memories of a time of innocence and youthful breakups. Awesome!
The man that used to manage the Chi-lites back in the 70s lived in the same apartment complex as my mom. He was a little sweet on her and we would all sit outside talking at the table with some other people. He was a Chicago police officer in the early 70s ... we would drive around at night and he would show me how he patrolled the streets and once in a while tell me stories of his time with the group. When the Chi-lites came to town a few years ago he was invited to come to their show. He showed me later all of the pictures that he took with them.
Another great thing about 70’s soul was the spoken word intro or monologue which were precursors to rap. The Chi Lites, Manhattans, Main Ingredient, Spinners, O’Jays, Isaac Hayes, Barry White, Bill Withers, and Bobby Womack all used the monologue effectively in their music as did James Brown.
I can understand the sentiment in the song. Maybe he was going a little too far, but I worked with several guys and ladies back in the 80s, and had a crush on one of the girls who was a ballerina at that time, who had moved to Colorado by the time I went back to the area around 30 years later. I went to some of the same places we all used to go, and it felt lonely and empty, thinking of them. Especially her.
As a 15 year when this was new, I was stunned when I heard this great singer and group on the radio. Just beautiful, all those vocal groups back in the 1970's. You don't hear greatness anymore, you hear voices filtered through computers no matter what genre...pure junk. BTW Asia you sang perfect pitch same key during the comments afterward. You got dang good ears and vocal cords...
Thank you for reacting to this song. It was very special to me as a 15-year-old Boy who had his first love break up with me. This song just came out, (1971 or 72) and while it described exactly how I felt, it made me cry every time it was played on the radio, and they played it a lot. Some great memories as always folks. Thank you and God Bless
I was there with you, only a couple of years older. I used to listen to this, "I love You Too Much to Ever Start Liking You" by Lobo, "Sylvia's Mother" by Dr. Hook, "Without You" by Harry Nilsson, and so many others.
Love the Chi-Lites, they were huge in the 70's and this is one of my favorite songs of theirs. If you like the Chi-Lites, you'll love the Stylistics; You Make Me Feel Brand New, Betcha By Golly Wow!
I have always loved this song, since It came out when I was 14! I also loved their other songs that other people have mentioned as well as the other groups mentioned! The 70s were so great!!
We got to experience all this great music as teenagers!! So glad I grew up during that time!! Love the fact that we got to listen to all kinds of top 40 music!! ❤️❤️
I’m telling you, it doesn’t get better than this. I saw them live at the 70’s Soul Jam along with the Stylistics (my favorite!) and the Dramatics. Another great group from that era is the Delfonics. “La La Means I Love You.” More please!
BJ you're spot on. People do go to the special places they shared with their ex. I see how Asia would think it was a form of self-inflicted torture, but it's all you have if she's not there. Great song.
I remember I was living at the nursing home when this song came out. Now so many years later this song brings memories. I know what you’re thinking but I was put in the nursing home prematurely.
This was the very first 45, I ever owned---one of the best songs, EVER!!! ❤️ The "Chi" part of their name, is because they were from Chicago (nicknamed "Chi-Town").
I didn't know this --and I've LOVED The Chi-lites ---from listening to them on WCFL & WLS radio.... back in the 60s and 70s... where I grew up....in CHI--town
Man, oh man, does this song bring back memories from my high school days. Those beautiful harmonies and the pain behind the lyrics. God but soul music was at its best back then. Guys could really sing. I miss those days.
The Chi Lites were from Chi Town, Chicago and part of the Chicago soul scene. Today they are often mislabeled as a Motown or Philly Soul act. In my opinion lead singer and Cheif songwriter Eugene Record is one of the greatest in the history of R&B. He never got the recognition he deserved as a writer. He belongs in the songwriter’s hall of fame.
God, how I love this song. Although this song came out in the very early 70's, I'm so happy I was born in 1952. The timing allowed me to be alive during the great hits of Motown, which made me appreciate the songs of groups like the Chi-Lites even more!!!!
Old W Boomer here. Growing up in the (fabulous!) 60s and 70s... yes, I loved all the normal pop groups, but I and several friends REALLY loved the (first) MoTown Sound and later the ChiLites, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Stylistics, etc. Such wonderful harmonies, instrumental backing arrangements, lead vocalists, and on and on. Such. Good. Music!!!
I was a teen when this song was released. Kids then didn't have a lot of money. It was a big deal to buy a 45rpm single, let alone a full LP album. But this is one of the handful of 45s I bought.
Yes, Asia. Some men do. BJ is right. Just because you can't understand it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. You are left haunted by the memories of being together and they are everywhere you go. Because chances are you live in the same place and will trip over something to remind you that you're alone now. This is the original song from 1972. Next up, SEND ME A LOVER by Taylor Dayne.
As a little white boy growing up in L.A., I was privileged to be able to watch Soul Train all the time. This style of R&B became part of my DNA and, in my opinion, is some of the best music ever recorded.
Had my first slow dance with Julie Sagrow to this. I was 14 and the year was 1974. Julie if your out there it was the best last dance to a great song with a stunning girl.
This song had a strong impact on me at the age of 9 driving in the car with my mom and hearing it on the radio. It had a good amount of radio play back in the day. Great reaction!
Sighhhh....they just don't make music like this anymore....that era is gone forever. The singers were handsome, well dressed and talented...they could sing and most had a signature dance for every song (especially The Temptations)..... Below are just a few suggestions but these songs are so incredibly awesome. 70's soul is the only genre of music that truly makes my heart feel happy. Chi-lites - "Oh Girl" The Delfonics - "Didn't I" (blow you're mind this time) The Main Ingredient- "Everyone Plays the Fool" Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - "If You Don't Know Me By Now" Manhattans - "Shining Star" The Five Stairsteps - "Ooh Child"
Good Suggestions Bertrand! I was a teenager in the 70s and got to see them with all the original members and The Stylisics. I know music changes but it definitely did not change for the better 😥
As an old white dude, I place this tune on my Top20 of all time. The lyrics, the arrangement, the melody, and the voices are heaven-sent. 90% of all rock, especially the more mellow stuff and Blues is absolutely derivative of Black Culture. Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving that soulful influence to enrich the best of modern music.
Those voices! The HARMONIES!! The music industry was promoting such GREAT TALENT! The 1970s!!! In my opinion, the last really great decade of music. Oh there are many awesome songs, musicians and artists since then, but I don't think that we have seen a decade like that since.
Another amazing R&B group that immersed me in the sauce in the early-mid '70s: The Chi-Lites, O'Jays, Stylistics, Manhattans, Harold Melvin & Blue Notes, Temptations, Spinners.... I'll always love you.
If you like the Chi Lites, two other soul songs you'll like are the Dramatics' "Whatcha See Is Whatca Get," the Main Ingredient " Everybody Plays the Fool." There's many more from thar era.
My Dad just passed. I put together a playlist for his memorial. Brought back a bunch of memories. You should check out Sly and the Family Stone, I am Everyday People. Such a great song. I wish I could share the whole list. It's really a good one. ❤️❤️✌️
I'm glad you got to hear this after the MC Hammer version! I still think you should check out the live on Soul Train for the outfits, the hair, and the dancing of the audience; specifically "stanky leg" at 3:40 🤣🤣. Great reaction 😊
Hello you guys! I'm Samotta Acklin .. My mom Co wrote this song and numerous other Chi lites hits, with the magnificent Eugene Record. She Also sang back grounds on most of their songs. Maybe you can listen to one of her songs , for the first time! The FABULOUS MISS BARBARA ACKLIN
60’s and 70’s soul. CANNOT ever be equalled. Of course this is the superior version. Thank God I was born when I was and soaked this vibe into MY soul,we all did.
This song was written by Eugene Record (the Lead Singer) and Barbara Acklin. "Have You Seen Her" made it to #3 on Billboards Top 100 chart in 1971. "Oh Girl" was a # 1 hit on Billboard's Top 100. M.C. Hammer had a Top 10 hit with the song. Thank you for the reaction video, Asia and BJ.
man, those were the days. this song just brings me back to a special point and a special day and a special girl. her name was Debbie Padilla from Rancho San Pedro.
When I joined the Army in 71 the drill sergeants would wake us up about 5 am and the brothers in the barracks would play this song EVERY MORNING! It always got us going.
Classic song. I had forgotten about how much I loved this song. I grew up listening to those wonderful Motown harmonies. This haunting song just plucks at your heart strings. So smoothe and sweet.
Per Songfacts This was written by Barbara Acklin and Eugene Record (who was frontman for The Chi-Lites). The spoken parts were inspired by the opening monologues on Isaac Hayes' 1969 Hot Buttered Soul album, where Hayes would tell an often heartbreaking tale using his speaking voice before singing. On "Have You Seen Her," Record speaks the verses, explaining that ever since his girl left him, he hasn't been able to enjoy the simple pleasures in life like going to the movies or playing with the neighborhood children. That's because he can't stop thinking about his girl, and he envisions her everywhere he goes, even though she's not really there. He tell himself she'll be back, but he knows deep down it's a lie. Still, he asks anyone who will listen, "Have you seen her?"
REAL SOUL from the golden period of soul which was between '68 and '76. Unlike what is passed off as RnB today...these types of groups just exuded heartfelt passion that yelled SOUL ! As for MC Hammer,I think he was more famous for his pants than his musical prowess.
I was in the army when this came out...Really liked it then, even more now...Great, Great Song!!!!! What a great era of music..Rock, country, soul motown and yes, even disco...I could listen for hours....
Hey, that's what love does to you. If you haven't felt that before then you've never really been in love and heartbroken. One of my favorite love songs of all times. Brings back memories in Junior high.
Thanx Asia and BJ. Another song that brings back so many great memories. Another great example of how great music was back in the day. Nothing like this today. Music was at a higher level then
My favourite Chi-Lites song is "Are You My Woman (Tell Me So)".... you'll recognize the brass section because it was sampled for a hit song not that long ago.... the 1960's and 1970's are the gift that keep on giving
One of the best soul tracks of all time. Found this when I was about 16 (2014) after feeling heartbroken and lost for the first time but damn this song always lifts me up and gives me hope of finding "her". This track is truly a blessing and evidence that good music never dies.
The pride of Southside Chicago, The Chi-lites! Lead vocalist Eugene Record was a genius. Their follow up song 'Oh Girl' became their signature song that was released in the Summer of '72 that hit number one not only on the R&B chart but on the Pop chart. The song would set for many artists to record their version of 'Oh Girl'. British singer Paul Young would have his own huge hit with the same song 18 years after The ChiLites released their version.
ASIA, we could all tell by that huge smile on your face that you got lost in that old "MO-TOWN" sound! And this is a classic from that era! Great reaction video to a GREAT SONG!
Eugene Record the original lead singer of the Chi-lites had the most beautiful, sad and utterly haunting voice. One of my favorite Groups in the World. I grew up listening to them and still listen to them. Listen to: A Letter to myself Toby Coldest day of my life Homely Girl Oh Girl Just listen to all of their Songs!
This song was a hit in the first semester of my first full-time college teaching job, which was in S Calif. Reminds me of the drive to work, as it would often be playing on the radio.
This is my music ! The Chi-lites are one of my favorite groups ! You should check out there other songs A Lonely Man , First Time I ever saw your face , Coldest days of my life, Try my side of love , and It’s Time for love !
We were little white kids in the UK back in the 1970's and loved all these groups from the USA. The-Chi-Lites, Stylistics, Delfonics, Detroit Spinners, Detroit Emeralds, the O'Jays, The Trampps, etc. The list goes on and one. Thank you for the great music.
God bless all you young people out there digging into the old stuff I grew up with. It makes me realize just how lucky I was to grow up when I did. Thank you.
Prolly one of the first songs I remember hearing. If it came out in 1971 I was 5 so it fits. My parents loved this song not to mention growing up in a neighborhood with about 75% African Americans so their music was also part of me growing up
The soundtrack of my youth in the 70s. I still love this song. When you guys are listening to Hall and Oats keep in mind that this is the type of music that influenced their sound.
Asia...when you lose someone, whether to a break up or through death, the heartache you feel does something to you. When my daughter was killed in a car accident it affected me and to this day, I am still not the same. Love is powerful and when you truly love someone, the love that is gone is truly felt.
Where did it all go wrong? Such amazing talent and nowadays with all of this C-rap, hip-hop, manufactured boy/girl groups, the overlords that control the music industry and the puppets within the industry have mostly removed the poetry the passion and the message of peace and love that used to exist. Musically, todays youth are being dumbed down and herded into little Barbie and Ken puppets that just consume any garbage presented to them because they don't know any better. Channels like this are doing a great service sharing what real musical talent was and still could be.

The 1970s!!!
In my opinion, the last really great decade of music. Oh there are many awesome songs, musicians and artists since then, but I don't think that we have seen a decade like that since.
Another amazing R&B group that immersed me in the sauce in the early-mid '70s:
The Chi-Lites, O'Jays, Stylistics, Manhattans, Harold Melvin & Blue Notes, Temptations, Spinners....
One of the prettiest songs. Special feeling of true love, sweet with beautiful harmonies. What seemed to be "in the palm of your hand" flew away.
Back to the day when actually being able to sing well…was everything.
This just gave me the CHILLS listening to the song. Sang along too!! Classic that stands the test of time. Relevant for today too!!!
You guys are as cute as a speckled pup under a red wagon.
60’s and 70’s soul.
CANNOT ever be equalled.
Of course this is the superior version.
Thank God I was born when I was and soaked this vibe into MY soul,we all did.
Some of the greatest music back in the day. ❤️
‘Oh, Girl” is their song that remains one of my favorites from that era! Go for it! Thanks for another great reaction! 😎🎶❤
Fantabulous. Love the harmonies. Music of my childhood
That's who it was, I couldn't remember who had covered this song, thanks Asia.
Listen to:
A Letter to myself
Toby
Coldest day of my life
Homely Girl
Oh Girl
Just listen to all of their Songs!
This song was a hit in the first semester of my first full-time college teaching job, which was in S Calif. Reminds me of the drive to work, as it would often be playing on the radio.
Always loved this song. Thank you for bringing back memories.
This is my music ! The Chi-lites are one of my favorite groups ! You should check out there other songs A Lonely Man , First Time I ever saw your face , Coldest days of my life, Try my side of love , and It’s Time for love !
That is such a beautiful song! I was in the Navy in the early 70's and missing my girlfriend when this song was out.
My favorite Chi-Lites song is Homely Girl, love the lyrics and arrangement.
Love 60s and 70s soul, we were so lucky to have so many great bands to listen to.
Thank you.
For many of the groups, from this era, not only was the music fantastic, but it was coupled to their clothing and dance moves.
Prolly one of the first songs I remember hearing. If it came out in 1971 I was 5 so it fits. My parents loved this song not to mention growing up in a neighborhood with about 75% African Americans so their music was also part of me growing up
BJ full on choreography, and Asia, I ain't even gonna look..😂😂
Asia , don’t forget, don’t let the classic smooth sounds and masterful harmonies let the lyrics get past you, this is one of the saddest classics….
A great romantic song, brings back memories. I grew up with this music. I love it! 💕💕💕👍
The soundtrack of my youth in the 70s. I still love this song. When you guys are listening to Hall and Oats keep in mind that this is the type of music that influenced their sound.
From England ...so so luved this music ..this song is my fav ...I'm now 62 ...danced at a DISCO the DISCO was at a church or town hall
My father would play this almost every week… my siblings and I had a whole dance routine to this…
One of my favorite songs till this day. Just an incredible musical and vocal performance. The harmony is ridiculous good.
Oh my Lord, I’ve forgotten how sweet music can be to the ears. I’m digging out my chi lites cd.
Awww soooo smooth❤️ loving the music, this is niceeee!!!!!🎶💃🎶
Thanks for listening Donnna!!
At Last you have reacted to my favourite band .THE CHI-LITES What a great group from the 70s i grew up listening to their music . Love your reactions please play more of them .
This takes me right back to those wonderful, beautiful years.

OMG!! Love this song!! It was played at every Junior High school dance I went to! Awkward .. looking for that special guy! 🫣😬
