RC 500 and Brad Lackey burned into my memory from magazines! Bikes I have owned: Honda Z50 a, CT70, 1974 xr75, 1976 CR125, xr250 prolink and 1986 CR250. The last two were stolen from me, wish I had a dirt bike!

I wished more American riders did what Lackey did. I mean, some did attempt, but under the wrong circumstances, like Villppoto. If riders like Hannah, Carmichael, Stewart, Villopoto in his high, and Tomac raced the MXGP it could have been super exciting for the series. But, of course quite the opposite happened.

I had a 73 250 CZ I was 11 weighed 90lbs 4 speed wide ratio raced and would always holeshot, we started the moto's with left hand on helmet. I would stomp it in 1st one handed at 3 4000 rpm no clutch. Don't need a clutch on a CZ or my YZ for that matter. Husky riders hated that, they had to use their clutch. They would break the rule and refuse to put their hand on their helmet Had a 75 Maico 400 R Big sunburst head nat. Alu. coffin gas tank, it was perfect. sigh

I had a 360 CZ back in 1964. Got it off a local racer I didn't know what I had. It was a great bike had the twin pipes and everything. I've never seen one before or since until this video. How neat. Great video.😃😃😃

Yup, we were all rooting for him on the world stage... for several years! Then he managed to squeak out the championship. like you said, about two weeks before Danny LaPorte won the 250's over there.
I think the interest in world championship MX started to recede after that, as MX here in the USA was gaining respectability. Our teams did pretty well at the MX des Nations for several years thereafter as I recall.

Thanks for this post on Brad Lackey! Both Brad and Jim Pomeroy were MX legends.
I got into motocross right after Jim Pomeroy won the first World Championship race in Spain. Then I learned of Brad and they both became riders I admired and rooted for. What annoyed me about Honda is they sent Brad to Europe but kept Pomeroy in the USA. Regardless, Brad and Jim were my inspiration to race and ultimately I gained my pro license and raced two years in the AMA Nationals though I never made it into the points. In the end I was semi-fast or a fast local whichever fit me best. Now if I had just had a set of those Simons Upside Down forks I might have actually gotten into the points.
Two things, CZ's of that era came with Jikov carbs which is why Brad mentioned it had a Japanese Mikuni carb. I think Adolph Weil's last name was pronounced Vile but not 100% sure. Part of following the World Championships is you learned how to pronounce foreign names pretty fast.

A huge Brad Lacky fan back in the day, when I started racing, he was on Kawasaki's, I ran Kawasaki's my entire career of amateur racing, except I slipped and tried a Yamaha once, man that was a lesson I never forgot.

Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s everybody here in Southern California wanted to be Brad Lackey and ride a CZ and a Husqvarna, the dude was an iconic legend I tell ya, Bad Brad was the real deal, I got to see him race many times here in So. Cal. At Saddleback raceway and at the famous Carlsbad racetrack, fond memories in deed! 😎🇺🇸✌️

Not that this means anything, but I raced on Red Bud several times, and went and watched the pro's a few times, saw Brad also, in 81 I was competing there, qualifying for the Silverdome, and while leading the moto I went really high in a berm to pass a slower rider and caught a tree root that was sticking out a few inches with my right shin, snapping it in half in two places, that was the last time I ever raced motocross, killing my dreams of ever having a chance of moving up, I was in a full cast for 8 months, been racing cars in one form or another ever since.

I met Brad at Bakersfield Speedway in Bakersfield, Ca. at a personal appearance. He was there with a Honda GP bike and when I asked him about his ‘82 Championship Suzuki he said sadly that it had been stolen. On a better note the Championship Suzuki has since been recovered from what I have read. I spoke with my moto hero Brad for a while and he was a complete gentleman. I see he just had a birthday and so I wish Brad a belated Happy Birthday!

Met Brad one time at laguna seca, and was very polite, nice and friendly. He actually took the time to talk to me and we talked for quit awhile, while people came up to him and he signed autographs while continuing our conversation. He even gave me his contact information. He even said " I'm impressed with your vintage knowledge" I also had a similar experience with Jeremy McGrath. Very down to earth people if you don't act like they're some kinda god. Jus treat them like regular people and they will treat you likewise. I'm blessed to had met many Dirtbike legends and motocross stars in my life by being in the motorcycle industry, racing and off road community. You name em and probably met them. Thank you to all Dirtbike legends and stars that took the time to talk to me ❤ 62 years old and owned over 125 motorcycles since my fist mini- bike with a lawn mower engine at age 12. God blessed me with the love of two wheels. ✌
    I'm jus say'n Flodaddy.
