    Put an old pillowcase over the edges of a trash can and throw your scraps that are too small to use into it. When it is partially full, sew it closed and donate it to a pet shelter or foster group. When the pet finds its forever home, the pillow goes with him/her. Saves all those scraps from the landfill and the pet has something with its scent on it. You can also make your own pillowcases with that why did I buy it fabric or thrift shop finds.

    Thank you, Dear Lady. Wish you lived right next door. I think we could be great Friends. If you ever get to Jacksonville, Florida (or make a special trip) my guest room is always open. It has a private bath and I have lots of sewing machines!! I teach quilting and neighbors and Friends are always giving me machines. I use them in class and give them to people who need them.
    Be well and safe.
    A new fan. ❤

    👏 BRAVO 👏 BRAVO 👏
    This video was even better than the last. So many good hacks. I especially like putting the newsprint through the printer for foundation paper patterns. You kinda blew my mind with that one. I love the concept of using an entire tablecloth to design the "entire" quilt. I've used like 12" vinyl, but it never crossed my mind to do the WHOLE quilt. The command strips w/ pinned on velcro is just brilliant for hanging up small holiday quilts. I've used trays for years to line up 2 1/2" strips to make scrappy log cabins, but I love the thought of leaving pieces for scrappy blocks.
    I know your going to hear this a lot. What a great & organized dollar store you have. I'm just a little jelly over that. Again thank you for taking the time to source, video and edit all the great shows that you present us. 😽

      I have decorative felted woollen rug on the wall, roughly 3 1/2 feet by 5 feet. Mainly to stop the draught from a vent without stopping the air circulation. I used a wide full length strip of regular sticky back velcro to hang it nearly 20 years ago. The rough side is on the wall. Never had trouble with it and redecorating or cleaning the rug is a breeze.

      It's amazing how many scrap blocks you can make with other projects by just using them as leaders and enders

    • @genealogydr
      @genealogydr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@JustGetitDoneQuilts Tell me more about leaders and enders. I mean, I technically know what they are but whenever I try to use them, I get bird nesting on the back or the fabric gets pulled into the machine. What size should they be, where to start sewing them (guessing not directly on the edge) and do you back stitch them? I may need a leaders and enders tutorial or if you have one (I can't remember if you do) that would be great!

    • @michelletothill8551
      @michelletothill8551 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@genealogydr Hold your thread tails. Back in the day we were all taught to hold our thread tails before starting a seam. You should not need to back stitch, but if holding the thread tails does not work, then try.

    • @cazfromoz1
      @cazfromoz1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@genealogydr Try to start sewing with needle in the down position, with top and bobbin threads at least 4" further out from needle and pierced right into fabric scrap (not at the edge). Then both threads are already embedded in fabric and should be easier to keep sewing without any dreaded bird nests. Try it and see what works for you.

    Here's another tip for pre marking your quilts. Go ahead & use that Sharpie on that clear plastic curtain and also use it to write on your rulers. It all wipes off easily with rubbing alcohol! I have a small spray bottle of it. (Old hairspray bottle) I use a piece of clear acrylic plexiglas that is about 10x24 and I just keep wiping it off until I like what I see. A big shower curtain would definitely cover a lot more blocks. LOVE your videos!!

    • @donnavamos8099
      @donnavamos8099 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @digitalDesignsbyPJ Just be careful that what you put on your design wall isn't too heavy, and take lots of photos as you go. How do I know? When making a Double Wedding Ring quilt for out daughter and son-in-law a few years back, the Velcro gave way. The quilt wasn't pieced yet because DH, our son, and I had been collaborating on the layout for colour balance.
      DH had found it on the floor in my sewing room on a Friday night after work and broke the news once I was home and changed. Thankfully, I had taken lots of photos. We brought my table cloth design wall down to the living room floor and the 3 of us went to work to put the pieces back where they were.
      The Velcro was one long strip on a board attached to the wall with the soft part sewn onto my design wall. It's 3 tablecloths sewn together and is 10 feet wide. The combined weight of that and the fabric was just too much, and I hadn't factored that in. Good luck!

    I often use throw blankets from the dollar store as batting for my smaller quilts. I also like buying flat sheets from goodwill and other Thrift stores to used as fabric. I also get a lot of thread and sewing accessories at Thrift stores. I've gotten lucky a few times and gotten some neat vintage fabric and vintage thread at some Thrift stores.

    The one dollar store trick I created is a life saver. I purchased a wooden painting canvas and turned it upside down. It makes a tray which I painted. Then I cut a sheet of magnetic sheeting to fit the inside of the tray. My tray was around 8-5 inches so it holds a lot of pins spread out. Easy to store, pins are easy to pick up and will also hold the other small things you use while sewing that can get misplaced on the table. Thinking of making a larger version with only half magnetic as I constantly find it over flows with ‘small things’.

      I made about 50 masks for my kids and grandkids that were doing a cross Canada move about a year ago, and loved the Dollarama wire on the roll so it could be cut to the correct length. Our oldest son is a nurse and is currently living in Louisiana with his GF, so sent some some Canadian themed masks to them, and they love the fit. His GF works as the State University, and has had compliments on the cool fabric!

      Despite being mostly covered by the green plastic tubing, perhaps the wire may rust when the mask is washed? This could be avoided by making it removable.

    I found that a small silicone paddle works will verses a finger manicure stick as the silicone grips and holds fabric and soft enough just in case it gets to close to needle. If you buy rolls of trash bags i use the ties for the mask nose pieces as i just tie the side of a trash bag to make the handle to carry out. I just love your tricks and hacks and it does really help on a budget. Thank you so much i love upcycling

    Thank you so much for the great ideas I would have never come up with on my own! I've been wanting a hinged mirror for fussy cutting, but couldn't bring myself to spend $15-$20 on one. I went to Dollartree and was looking for the locker mirror, but they didn't have them. I think I got there too late. I did find some mirrored candle coasters. I scraped the feet off the back, put some tape down the middle, and it works wonderfully!

      I was given a couple of ripstop nylon type shower curtains. I use one on my table when crafting, it's ideal, plus it can be folded up small for storage too. I gave the other one to a friend, she uses it to help keep her car clean when muddy paws are being transported in it. It's great for lining the boot (trunk) of the car too.
