Have you got a go-to plan when open-water swimming? 🏊

Yes. Im kinda lazy when it comes to the pool so i stop at the end of the lane all the time. When im open water i can swim long distances without stoping.

I always use ear plugs in open water as the cold water on my ear drums makes me very dizzy in the water. Closing eyes when my face is down also leads to dizziness sometimes for anyone considering trying that.

Which brand goggles are these white ones in the video??

Usually I do long and steady and ignore speed work. But, this inspires me to put in some speedwork!

I try and work on staying calm and conserving energy. I prefer open water to the pool because I don’t like 25 yards and turn back. Give me the longer laps!!

Excellent advice and video! Thank you for your hard work in making it. One drill I find especially beneficial in open water training is alternating the sides to which I'm breathing. I try to do 30 strokes breathing to the right, 30 to the left, and 30 mixed.

Hardest thing for me was to swim open-water without a wetsuit. Not having the feeling of security by floating on the wetsuit. Lucky to have practiced it before my first non-wetsuitlegal race. However, once confident without it, it's a greater feeling of freedom, you feel so much not constricted by it.

You seem to mention changing pace and "race pace". I can only swim at the same pace both open water and pool.

#gtncoachescorner Thoughts on tradeoffs between an aero helmet with visor vs. sunglasses? In the rain you could opt for no sunglasses but would still be left with the incremental weight of the visor. I wonder if the tradeoffs are too miniscule to make a difference, though could be a great GTN does science video!

#gtncoachescorner What is your advice for dealing with recurring swimmer's ear? Particularly if it can take up to a week to subside in the middle of race season, do you have any strategies for swimming safely or best to avoid all together until fully better?

Nice video. I’m from Sweden so for me it’s a little bit funny that you don’t translate “fartlek” 😄. I suppose you know it means playing with the speed spontaneously. Coming from running but for sure it’s useful in swimming, bicycling, skiing.
I hope many see this video and get inspired cause many are not comfortable with the ow swim. It takes time to be comfortable, and there are no shortcuts- you have to swim.
My most epic ow swim I did was one after season in September in the lake late in the evening in full moonlight. The moonlight street in the water was my swimming lane.
Maybe not do it if you not really know the water.
2021 I swim almost 97 000m ow . My goal was 100 000 but in IM Barcelona 2021 they made the swim so short cause of waves. So I didn’t reach my goal.
Today I just got 1500 m technique actually pool , but it will be ow , so my plan is to change for ow technique .
    Best regards
    Marie-Louise

#gtncoachescorner how do I know wearing a wetsuit is worth it? I get down to 37:30 from 38:30 with a wetsuit on a 2k swim, but I lose this minute by taking off the wetsuit in T1. Although I only tried it 3-4 times - is it possible it takes more practice to get faster in it? I feel fairly comfortable without a wetsuit in 19-21 degree water, but I get intimidated seeing everyone wearing one… How can I decide whether I should wear it or not? Thanks!

I'm scared AF by the idea of looking into the murky lake/river while swimming...

I get twitchy in open water too, especially if there are lots of weed. Arrgh. Just keep at it.

I know! I used to only go when other people were in the water. But lately, I’ve been on my own in terms of pace, or by a great lake but without any swim friends, so I’ve swum solo. Both ocean and lakes! It takes some mental effort, but if I could do it, you can, too!!

Also if you think of weeds just like land grass in your local park, it’s less scary. They’re just grasses, under the sea :D

What if my race pace is the same as my try-not-to-drown pace? #askingforafriend
