@@Matthewismith I am currently trying to achieve active range in the splits so this came at just the right time. This is a one in a million explanation on how to work towards creating a slide split. . I have never seen anyone talk about this. Thanks so much for this video.
@Bamboo Training I haven't achieved the side split yet. But I got a front split in 3 weeks by working the muscles through a greater range of motion using static and dynamic weighted movements. I've been focusing on overcoming the ball & socket for side split and it's been... quite slow. Practically no changes. I guess I'm going to have try using the principles that helped me get the front split.
Thanks man! I trained for month when I was 27 (coming up short), not being sure if I'm not too old for it. Now I've come back 10 years later at 37 hoping I'm not too old again :)
I’ve been training in martial arts for twenty years and haven’t made progress in my side splits. This video finally explained to me why. This is literally life changing information. I’m going to start incorporating this information into my training and finding the positions that work for me.
@@dr.elementa1735 I’ve dropped two inches. I’m nowhere near the splits, but the fact that I made any progress at all is already something. I’m taking it very slowly because I’m 36 and don’t want to injure myself, but there’s hope now.

After thirty odd years in martial arts from kickboxing, karate, must thai, kuk soil won and back to muay thai not one trainer explained this in detail. This guy done that very easily. Excellent Video. I also am one of the few people who learned to split as an adult. Every thing in this video is correct but he left one thing out. If you can't split as an adult follow this video with one addendum. You must treat the stretching as a type of body building. After you have stretched as much as you can you need to learn to hold your body weight up while splitting as much as you can. You won't be able to do this at first but take as much weight off of your hands as possible; increasing the weight on your leg muscles. Once you can hold your body weight up, press your legs into the ground with your muscles 4 times for ten seconds. Do this about 2 times per week. This will build up the muscles and lenghen the muscles allowing you do eventually do the full splits. The body weight is perfect for this because the further your legs are apart the more leverage your weight has on your muscles.
I just tried your tips about rotation of the hips and after ages of training I got my split for the first time! In only one day with your tips! ( I was already close but stuck ) thank you! Iove you!🙏😱💛
@@Matthewismith I appreciate this video a lot. I don't think anyone can do an inline split if there bones can't let them however I do believe the triangle split you demonstrated can be achieved by most. You don't want to stretch the ligaments that holds are bones together only the muscles so we have to be gentle with our bodies especially with the side splits.
This is exactly the spirit lifting I needed after stalling with my stretches and being angry at my body for being made that way. Going back to stretching with a more open mind.

Thank you so much my man. This is so helpful on so many levels. Apart from being extremely inspired by the quality of your work from start to finish. I have just a couple of things I'd like though, please. 1) The split position you get down into at 07:11 - for a person , as me, who is quite inflexible at this point , I am just unable to get into this position where I can rotate my hip forward in the manner you have. Coz my hamstrings and adductors seem to be really tight and when i sit, i manage just about 90 degrees. So from that position, i find it virtually impossible to do the forward hip rotation as you've shown here. I feel (please correct/ help me on this) that only after getting close to say around 150 degrees will I "unlock" a position so as to be able to do those hip rotations. What would you advise me here , please? 2) From an mma / fighting / high kick standpoint, we are usually told NOT to jut out our butt (basically not do the APT - please correct me if i am wrong) which means the femur movement again gets obstructed. So, how then must we do the high kicks without that? And is it about getting our bones out of the way which is, say, more important OR training the adductor muscles for flexibility. THANK YOU FOR READING. I AM GETTING UP MOTIVATED AND INSPIRED TOMORROW AFTER WATCHING THIS.
I would really appreciate his take on the APT post flexibility training. Is there a time where the femur will stop being a problem? doesn't seem like it
kicks are different. when you kick you externally rotate the leg to hit diagonally upwards like he shows in 11:17. this way you avoid the collision of bones. the knee should be higher and foot lower and kick diagonally upwards. if you watch taekwondo athletes that can do even 180 degrees kicks you'll see that they don't do the extreme anterior pelvic tilt you do for the splits.
First, getting the right position doesn't equal an instant side split. You need to learn the correct position AND train any limiting factors (hip adductors, abductors, rotators, etc.). 1. the positioning you are comparing to is a very advanced drill meant for training the inline split. You don't do this until after achieving the triangle side split i.e. you have at least calves touching the floor side split. Try the setup at 06:50 instead, this is an entry level position for learning the triangle side split. Forget about the inline split (the timestamp you mention) until you are getting very close and even already touching the floor. 2. You can't magically move the bones and the the hip structure. If the bones jam, there's no way to change that. I recommend watching very closely to what high kickers actually do. Remember: - it's individual so hip structures vary - there are two ways of fixing this, APT and externally rotating the leg. Combine these two together and the positioning can be subtle, but extremely important. For instance, turning the base foot out can create the external rotation position (so not need APT).
@@Matthewismith Thank you so much for your gracious response. I could certainly begin with what you've advised. Thank you, I will keep at my practice.!
I like how this guy could lift himself back up with literally zero momentum, only using his legs and retraced the exact same way as he went down. That's some real strength right there.

One of the best videos out here. I was even able to know why I have some knee noises through the visualization of the knee anatom on the video... also do a video on such a topic
So glad this was recommended to me!!
Just started back at martial arts training after 25 years away and wanna get to a stage I can split. Literally watched this video and tried it using your techniques and gone from 90° easily to 100/105° on the first try!
Will be using this information and seeing how far I can go, thanks for fantastic info!
This is so perfectly explained!
Thank you.
im still reeling from how informative this video was. Would love to see this channel cover more topics in this style, especially climbing related training. Instant subscribed
Makes for impressive moves on the dance floor and silly comments at the gym.... GOOD STUFF MATE
thank you for explaining the science behind the moves in an easy language to let us help our body to have a right style work up... thank you...
Remember:
- it's individual so hip structures vary
- there are two ways of fixing this, APT and externally rotating the leg.
This is BY FAR, the best video on you tube, on how to train for the side split, KUDOS SIR !!!!----Well Done
Thanks! Anything on the front split?
I like how this guy could lift himself back up with literally zero momentum, only using his legs and retraced the exact same way as he went down. That's some real strength right there.
Gosh, I wish you were in South Africa so I can take classes in person
FINALLY! A proper explanation of side splits!!! Thank you so much for making this!!!
This drastically improved my splits almost instantly. Thanks man
This is without doubt the best ever yt video on the side split. I myself, (back in the 80's, yeah before the Internet, in the media stone age 😀) was in the same position, not being able to do the SS and wondering why, after that I began to buy books (like Stretching Scientifically) and with a few changes (that you mention here) my problems were solved. Thanks again for this great video.
