  • Join us on a delightful family weekend trip to Balik Pulau, the heart of Penang's durian country, as we embark on a quest to uncover this year's durian season updates! In this exciting vlog, we dive into the vibrant world of durian hunting, exploring whether the highly anticipated fruits are readily available and if prices have finally started to drop.
Our journey begins with a hearty breakfast at Hot Bowl Rangoon Road, indulging in the famous Penang White Curry Mee to fuel our adventure-filled day. Energized and ready, we head to Balik Pulau to satisfy our cravings for Kim's renowned Penang Laksa, setting the perfect tone for our durian escapade.
As we traverse the picturesque landscapes of Balik Pulau, we discover that durians have already begun to drop at various farms in the area. From the bustling Anjung Indah between Paya Terubong and Balik Pulau to quaint roadside stalls along the way, the tantalizing aroma of fresh durians beckons us.
Despite missing out on our favorite Lim Brothers Durian Farm, a valuable lesson is learned - always book your durians in advance! Undeterred, we walked around town until we finally stumbled upon Pondok Durian, nestled on Jalan Pondok Upih, Balik Pulau, where we're treated to an exquisite selection of D604 durians. The kids are in heaven, savoring each creamy bite with delight!
Our adventure concludes with a promising note - while prices are gradually decreasing, the limited supply keeps them slightly higher than usual. However, with next week on the horizon, we remain optimistic for even better deals and flavors. Stay tuned for further updates as we continue our durian odyssey in Balik Pulau!
Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for more exciting travel adventures and culinary explorations. Until next time, happy durian hunting! 🌳🌟

@@pishedbloke Yesterday, I placed an advanced order for 1 Hor Lor, 1 Musang King, 1 Red Prawn, 1 Black Thorn and 1 Siao Hong. When we've arrived there, a last minute update from our relatives and we told the seller that we'd like to buy all except Red Prawn. The seller told us that once ordered, we cannot cancel our order just like that, as there are customers in the morning who were looking for the durians that we've ordered. We told them that even if you place them back into the rest of the durians, there will be customers who'd want to buy one. The seller (especially the dark skin guy) was very rude and arrogant and he proceeded to throw all the 5 durians back into the rest of the durians. So, question here is, aren't you contradicting yourself? You placed the durians back, there will be customers who will still buy, right? Stupid as stupid does!
We've been buying from this stall for more than 20 years, and they have seen the last of us! Period!
They are also not the cheapest anymore, especially since last year, and when we tried their Hor Lor and Red Prawn yesterday, their quality has dropped a lot!

Expensive coz it's still early season. Only few areas are in full swing now including Sungai Pinang. I wont pay RM30-40 per kilo for such average cultivars like Lipan, D14, D11, 604 and 600.
Bumper harvest is expected to be around mid June in most places across the state, so prices will definitely get cheaper and affordable.

Sorry am out of touch.. what's D604 taste like & does it hv a common name? U said Khun Poa has a sour taste? The other variety u mentioned is Capri? What's that?

    • @pishedbloke
      @pishedbloke  หลายเดือนก่อน

All these names are different durian varieties The "D" prefix is used by the Malaysian agriculture department to register these different varieties, so there are hundred of D breeds, but some have been given names too, such as Hor Lor, Capri, Musang King and Red Prawn, so actually all these have their D codes. For example, Musamg King is actually D197.

Bro, can you pls help me find out the Pulau Penang durain is what number variant? Easy for me to check with SG supplier whether they have or can get from JB

    • @pishedbloke
      @pishedbloke  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Hi bro, here are some I could find sourced from some online sites, by no means exhaustive or covering all. There are some new variants like "lobster" and of course the Musang King and Black Thorn too which have gained more popularity over the years:
      D11
"Number Eleven" is a very popular durian in the 70's. It has creamy yellow flesh with a pleasant taste and a subtle smell.
      D604
The D604 was first cultivated by the late Mr. Teh Hew Hong of Sungai Pinang, Balik Pulau. The flesh is quite sweet, and has some "body" to it as the seed is small.
      D600
This durian originates in Sungai Pinang in Balik Pulau. The flesh has a bittersweet taste to it, with a touch of sourness. The one that I documented is a bit hard.
      D700
The flesh is darker than D600, like chrome yellow. Also slightly hard. Crispy, but the smell is not very strong.
      Ang Sim (Red Heart)
Ang Sim is a durian with flesh which is quite soft and very sweet, and dark yellow in colour. It also has a nice aroma.
      Khun Poh
This durian takes the name of the late Mr Lau Khun Poh, who first
budded it. Khun Poh has beautiful orangy flesh with a slightly bitter-sweet taste and a heavy aroma.
      Hor Loh (Water Gourd Durian)
The flesh of the Hor Loh is very soft, dry and quite bitter. It has
a sharp smell to it. Hor Loh was first cultivated at the Brown Estate of Sungai Ara. It got its name from its appearance resembling a "Hor Lor" pumpkin.
If the durian hits the ground hard when it falls, the flesh tends to be bitter thereafter.
      Ang Heh (Red Prawn Durian)
Ang Heh originates from Pondok Upeh, Balik Pulau, and has a round-reddish flesh is highly aromatic, very soft with a bitter-sweet taste.
      Xiao Hung (Little Red Durian)
Xiao Hung, whose name means "Little Red One," originates in Sungai Pinang, Balik Pulau. The flesh has a bittersweet taste to it, with a touch of sourness. The one that I tasted for this write-up is a bit hard. There are only one or two seeds per section, but the flesh is thick.
      Yah Kang (Centipede/Lipan Durian)
Yah Kang is one of my favourite durians. Although its flesh is whitish, the taste is superb, milky, like very sweet, melting chocolate. The name "yah kang" means centipede, and accounts for the number of centipedes found at the foot of the tree, hence giving it the rather unusual name.
      Bak Eu (Pork Fat Durian)
Bak Eu has a slightly acidic aroma. The flesh is whitish while the taste is quite bitter but nice.
The following are some of the durians at Peng Siew Durian Estate in Titi Serong, Balik Pulau, on the AsiaExplorers Durian Feast, 17 June, 2006 .
      D17
D17 is dark cream flesh. The taste is slightly dry but sweet. It is a tasty durian.
      Coupling (sometimes pronounced Capri)
This durian is gets its unusual name because it looks like two durians joined together, one big and one small. When split open, you almost thought the two halves belong to two different durians. Coupling has whitish flesh which is slightly dry but tastes good.
      Ooi Kyau (Tumeric Durian)
The name Ooi Kyau (tumeric) describes the colour of the bright yellow flesh of this durian. It is very sweet and tasty.
      Chaer Phoy (Green Skin Durian)
Chaer Phoy is shaped like a small canteloupe. The skin is bright green, giving it the name which means "green skin". Chaer Phoy has creamy white flesh which is a bit dry, not too sweet but tasty.
      Ang Jin (Red Yoke Durian)
As the name suggests, Ang Jin Durian has deep orange flesh. It is very sweet and tasty.
      Lin Fong Jiau
This durian is named after Lin Fong Jiau, aka Mrs Jackie Chan. I wonder whether it is indicative of the relationship of the celebrity couple, for Lin Fong Jiau is a bittersweet
