- Can you turn a handful of transistors, diodes, wire and other electronic parts into a metal detector? Is a do-it-yourself metal detector even a possibility? I’m here to tell you that yes, it is possible! However, my channel is known for being honest about the truth of things, so I want to make the point is that this is not an easy proposition. There are a number of advantages of building your own metal detector including the fact that it can be a fun and rewarding project. You get to learn about electronics and how they work. Additionally, building your own metal detector can save you significant money compared to buying a commercial one. You can also customize your metal detector to fit your specific needs and preferences. I think to make something as complex as a detector, you need to understand how it works. You need to know this to understand what you are building. That is why in this video we will begin with the basics of how they function. So even if you have no intent of building a detector, you should watch to learn more about how they work - understanding them can make you a better detector operator.

I made a beat frequency metal detector from a kit from radio shack. It was a great metal detector. It had to be tuned all the time but i got pretty good at it. I could almost tell u what and how big stuff was.

This is quickly becoming my favorite channel! I like learning new stuff and this is the place. I'm struggling with wiring the guitars I make, so I think I'll have to step back from making a metal detector for now...
But you know a lot more about it having watched the video.
I too wire guitars I make, if you think about an electric guitar pickup, it's sorta like the coil on a detector, the wraps of wire create an impedance as the guitar string vibrates over top of the magnet the wire is wrapped around. There is massive technology as to how many wraps, how many magnets, ect... single coil is one magnet with wraps, humbucker is 2 magnets with wraps that sit close enough that there is canceling of frequency, and if you reverse the direction of half the humbucker, it is now out of phase. Where it gets tricky is capacitor & resistor & and potentiometer values and how they affect the signal or output.
One simple thing most people do not know: Iron is ferromagnetic, copper is paramagnetic, and gold is diamagnetic.
One thing that people need to know, is how to read the magnetic flux feedback to be able to build a discriminator circuit.
This will require some learning, but at least people now have a little leg up on building and tuning one.
If by "magnetic flux feedback" you mean inductance, then yes.

Great information thanks Chris! I think I'll stick to buying or hiring commercial detectors for the near future. People who complain about prices don't usually understand how much time is spent on R&D work to get these things to find gold, and what it costs the manufacturer. Thanks again.

They don't cost much to build if you compare to the prices as with all "goods". Capitalism is what it's called/Free market. I live in Sweden so i can just say that we see the US Very different than you do with your "Indoctrination" into ignorance

I´m not able to design something like a metaldetektor from scratch, but i do know how to use a soldering iron and a bit about what the different components are and what they do.
Metal detectors have always fascinated me and i have built several metal detectors from the very simple BFO designs found in old books and on the internet to more complicated detectors like the pulse induction whites idx pro/vdi clone which can be found on the internet. It was a lot of fun making the pcb, winding the copper coils and find the right components and soldering it all together.
I found several coins on the beach with the whites clone and dug up a lot of pull tabs from beer cans... I finally gave in and bought a brand new XP detector.

I'm good at soldering things I've done my own micro sized FM transmitters and build a AM radio and a few other things like that should be able to easily do this

The ATX is an induction balance or VLF type detector. That is the technology it uses. Mono coils run only on Pulse Induction or PI detectors. So, no, you cannot get a mono coil to work on your machine as it is of the wrong technology for that.

My best gold day in Louisiana was two very heavy 14k men`s rings, a thick but smaller 14k diamond ring, a 14k small earring, and gold rim glasses that I couldn`t find any information on. Found all of this 9in under an hour on a low lake in a swimming area in 1996 with a 250 dollar Radio Shack metal detector with a 7 inch coil, manual ground balance, all metal threshold mode with a simple symbol target ID mainly designed for American coins. Large rings rang up as aluminum screw caps or 5c typically. I found a lot of jewelry and rings with it. If tuned right it was very sensitive to very small targets.
I dropped my only very thin wire fishing hook I used to catch very small bait fish in tall hay grass one day on the riverbank and had my detector in the boat and it easily detected the hook although seeing it took time. But it allowed me to continue fishing. So they come in handy. I have a Minelab Vanquish 340 now that I got on a damaged box deal. It`s a great all around machine for what I look for here. Plus I have a Bounty Hunter Pioneer 202 with simple coin based target ID if anyone wants to go with me. It`s perfect for someone with no experience to find some shallow quarters and relics and have fun.

I know metal detectors made to find gold nuggets, not deeply buried treasures. The treasures are much larger.

hi there!, I just found this channel! I'm interested in building the 555 timers proyect. I've already put together a monocoil detector that i found on internet. Could you tell me what's the inductance of the TX and RX in the project with the two 555 timers?
Check the reference link for the project. If it has a fixed number of loops in the coil, you may determine the inductance experimentally.

I kind of imagine using a small hand held O-scope as the interface and it being an visual alert. Requiring reading the scope to see changes In the sent frequency and received frequency. Possibly moving to an audible alert after it is perfected! I have learned a lot about electronics in the last 5-6 years, studying on my own, watching videos. I wish I had gotten into electronics years ago when I was younger! I was tearing apart things to see how they worked before I started school! I guess I had a damper put on my creativity due to me getting in trouble for taking stuff apart. I always seen myself as being a possible inventor in the future, or a repair guy/tinkerer when I grew up. Ended up being non of them, an electrician,but I have worked in nearly all the trades. From carpenter, brick and stone mason. Electrical, plumbing, moving mobile homes, and prefab homes. And always been into mechanics. Worked on cars all my life, not professionally. Mostly my own stuff however I have done some repairs for other people when called on. Mostly things like breaks and wheel bearings clutches, gear shifter cables. I do wish I had gotten into electrical engineering 25-30 years ago, I got a bad taste of schooling as a young kid. I was held backs year because I only passed test didn't do homework and class work was hit and miss. I was bored out my mind. I only paid attention to the class work if I be was interested in the subject and passed the test because I could just answer the questions and be done. I'm fairly certain i have one of the things they called lazy. Hyperactive , trouble maker, and s host of other inaccurate names. I think maybe it's asbergers (probably definitely butchered the name ) from the little I studied on it , seems it describes me better than I could myself. Things that didn't exist back in the day. Yet caused kids lives to be destroyed because of the way they were treated because of it. I was always looking ahead in the textbooks. Even looking into the next grades books. The classes had a little pass through in the back. Sometimes I sit back there, and s book I'd left in reach. So if get it and look and read through it! Going off the rails a lot a bit!! Maybe I can get myself an electronics work area worked out! There is a few things I need it for! A GOLD FINDER,/DETECTOR could just be one of them. As long as it doesn't require coding. Me coding Is like getting a chicken to play chess! I can peck at it , seem as if I'm doing something. When it comes down to it NO. No, nothing to see here!! Analog electronics I can handle it! Maybe we a Coil connected to a frequency generator that the Duty cycle as well as frequency can be adjusted along with voltage . Then a pickup coil , tuned to work in the operating band of the sending coil. So the pickup coil will be able to sense the secondary tones from the sending coil! I believe as visual interface is the simplest.it may not work the best in the field, in operation however it should work and fairly well. Discrimination should be simple as far as background iron . The hot rocks and heavy iron oxide deposits could be a different story. This could be another upgrade handled by the addition of micro controller and possibly amplifier and speaker/headphone. The pickup coil could possibly just just be the coil ran through a pre amp and then connected to the input of the amplifier! Using band pass filters to block slot of the sender coils frequency. And possibly operating in ultra high frequencies. Maybe use a ultra high frequency as a Carrier frequency and pulse it at a much lower frequency. And possibly a coil more like a sat. dish. With the dish being the pickup coil. Or maybe flip that. The large sender coil. Using a small pickup coil to be more precision on the pickup of small targets. The ability to pickup a bit of gold a fraction of a grain of rice would be awesome for a home built machine! Especially below 1/4-- 1/3 grain. And really special if it is 12" plus deep in iron rich soil.
It would be really awesome if be someone built something similar to Nickola Tesla's coil that required s ground rod. Then sent serious high voltage frequencies into the earth. And a series of coils picking up everything in the soil easily up to 12' deep! If the time is spent to Scan and "Draw the picture" with the Machine. With different power ranges it can pickup deeper objects. Possibly with higher frequency, pickup with greater detail. The ability to take a 5gal. Bucket place 3 items inside of at 3 levels. Then someone use the machine to tell you within 1-2" where and a good estimate of the size. Within 1-2" of the Diameter and thickness. Or at least the mass of the object and it's material make-up. The majority of the metal. So s gold silver alloy 30/70 gold/silver. Would show as a silver target possibly with s close by gold target! At about 11"-13" and weight around 2-4 grams! A machine like that would be able to name it's price! And it be paid!
I think using and interpreting an oscilliscope in the field would be terribly difficult - even a small one.

Thanks for the detailed information about why I might not want to build a metal detector, and the tiny bit of information on the theory of operation. I thought I clicked on this video to learn more about metal detectors and their circuits, but what I really wanted was 25 min of discouragement and only about 10 min of info. I especially liked how you said the same thing over and over and over but still managed to keep your sparse technical info concise.
Thanks for the obtuse but still snarky comment. My apologies if I burst your bubble of building your own detector with 25 minutes of realism. Understanding more detail on the theory of operation for metal detectors requires some substantial background in physics, something not really suitable for a general TH-cam metal detector video. If you use google you can find a lot more info on metal detector theory.
Maybe title your video a little better is all. You didn't burst my bubble at all. I have no interest in building a metal detector, but in understanding them a little more so I can know what I need to study to aggregate and correlate that information into another area of focus. I did get good basic information from your video, but it was annoying to have to skip around in all the useless fluff to find it. What a waste of time for anyone who actually watched the whole thing. You actually did a very good job of keeping the actual informative portion concise. But the cautionary portion could have been condensed down to a couple of sentences. Maybe try holding the general population in a little higher regard rather than assuming most people other than you are uneducated morons. Most people are not going to click on a video that claims to be how to build a metal detector unless they have at least a little technical knowledge. Maybe assume people are seeking further knowledge in good faith, and speak to that audience. Or don't make a video, to avoid cluttering up the Internet with a bunch of self important blowhard fluff, that knowledge seekers have to sift through to find good information.
You have to remember that what for you with your specific intent is useless information may be very useful information to others. If you have no interest in building a detector, it seems a video on building a detector is not going to be what you are interested in. Lots of folks want to build a metal detector for $25 that is as good as a commercial one that costs $1,000 - and that is just not realistic. If your interest is in theory, you would be way better off searching through Google and reading white papers and other research on metal detector theory and operation than watching a DIY detector video on TH-cam.
I own an old White's 5000D Coinmaster. I bought it new but do not remember what year, lol! I can recap/repair but is it worth it? Shoudl I just go new? Great video!!
They made 3 of these - series one, series 2 and series 3. Series 1 is an very ancient dinosaur. Series 2 is a dinosaur, series 3 is just very old. I think you are talking something like trying to get a 1990s flip phone to be your main phone. I'd get something newer. Unless you can repair it yourself, you may have limited options - Whites went out of business several years ago.
Great video, thank you. What if what your looking for, is a large ship buried beneath sand in the ocean? Sonar identifies an area without specificity. Is there a way to build a large coil looking for ?
If you are looking for great depth, the metal detector is the wrong technology.

How deep, depends on many factors, most important is the size of the target. Rocks also depend on the kind of rocks - not all rocks are the same.

I, for example, have a nuclear radiation detector. how could I use such a detector, do they have certain metals and other "signatures" than the classic ones? or a homemade radar...
Yes but they don't integrate well with a metal detector. An XRF device can distinguish one metal from another. But they see into an object only about a quarter inch - and they cost about $50,000. So if you find an object with your detector that is two inches deep, the XRF would be of no use until you dug it out. And normally once you have dug it up, your eyes can tell you what it is.

But your nuclear detector cannot tell lead from gold from iron from copper or any other metal. your detector just looks for things that give off radioactive emissions. So its not useful for what you are suggesting.

Whats the best frequency for finding gold? I read 10 Hz is the best for gold.
And is it possible to get metal detectors that only detect gold and not other stuff?
10 KHz is for a coin and relic machine. Most all purpose coin and gold machines are about 20 KHz, and those detectors designed for gold and intended for finding flakes and nuggets are around 50 KHz.

worse performance. Copper (what the wires are really made of) is a much better electrical conductor than gold.
Oh no! Not another project!!! But seriously, I have a Radio Shack model Micronta 4003 metal detector. I modified it to make the head much lighter by cutting out most all the plastic except for a skeleton of what it was. The coils look exactly like the heathkit 1290 coils. I have been experimenting with litz wire and I wonder if I could make a more sensitive coil set using this wire. Also had an idea to design a detector using sine wave circuitry - My Micronta sounds like it uses square waves throughout the detection.
Litz wire helps a little bit, but its not a big huge difference.

I probably have every component I would need, before I even watch this, because I have tons and tons of electronic components, some I got through auctions, some buy buying various electronic components, some by literally soaking up old television sets people throw out.
And on top of that I have a custom built coil winding machine where I can mount any capstan on I want to on it and it has a counter so I can make an exact number of turns.
My dad taught me electronic theory and gave me various radio kits to build as a child, and I have built high power driver systems, so generally, I'm pretty confident that I can do it.
And if not, my younger electronics engineer brother can fine tune it.

most detectors start with an opamp or a comparator IC. some enameled wire for inductors. you can have a working metal detector with as few as 12 components. (including the 9V battery) its a fun project EDIT. you wont find 'gold' nuggets you'll find 'coins' and 'junk'

Part of energy research is knowing how metals respond to magnetic fields.
I know that gold, unlike iron and copper, is a diamagnetic metal.
This is one of the properties to know about it which is critical for telling it apart from iron, copper, lead, nickel or any alloy of them.
@@hunnybunnysheavymetalmusic6542 gold would be detected. it would be in the center of the detection range of the opamp. thats why you get this 'wobble' sound on old metal detectors, it is oscillating. where as iron or say aluminum would register from the inductor coil on the positive or negative feedback sides of the opamp. it is automatically included since it contains properties of both. what i meant by the phrase 'you wont find gold nuggets' i was implying the 'target' would not be large enough to find any meaningful gold with a homemade detector. gold coins? yes, it would 'detect'. i would suggest anyone to purchase a professional metal detector for professional prospecting. if your just playing games, make one.. it's fun!
@@supyrow I also know about the nuclear physics of electron spins and polarity and will be employing this, because it allows me to really fine tune pulsing circuits that stratify the resonance of a given atomic element, on top of the magnetic field effects it produces, and along with some 'beam antenna' technology I learned in the USAF based on radar systems, I know how to not merely tune for frequencies and spins, but how to aim and focus a phased array emitter to make it actually sweep all on its own [as in not needing to have a hand held coil, but basically ground penetrating radar (you can rent GPR but its not tuned specifically for gold, it just gives you a general idea what is down there within 25 feet of the surface...not what I need nor what I am aiming to make)] moving on a close conforming, self propelled cart.
This device will have room for some pretty complex modulation and monitoring equipment, a computer [likely a laptop], its own power [either all DC power, or a very highly cleaned AC power through a small turbine engine], a seat, fuel, lights, balancing legs [for steep and irregular ground, so it doesn't tip over], and a very high resolution GPS system [for mapping].
On top of that, I will employ a drone that will track and video the whole thing so that everything is not merely a map coordinate, but also there will be a [relatively, based on variable such as ground cover (snow, grass, trees, fallen leaves, etc) and sun direction, available light, etc.] and this will be live streamed into a data compilation so that it is exactly tracked and time stamped with all of the rest of the data so it will be one continuous parallel file system that makes a 3D map with all the information so that a potential client can literally play and rewind it, slow it down, freeze frame it, etc.
While I had recently been slammed by some bad people who had screwed with my many years of college credits which I was hoping to take to the local university and pursue a course in geology with, recently the government contacted me and is looking into helping me recover my pristine college history so I can return to school and get my geology degree.
I will not only be looking into mineralogy, but also I have been studying topography and how to use geophone technology.
I saw some truly excellent ways to make geophone arrays at home, for as little as $25 per unit, and that is with all store bought stuff.
I may have most, if not all of what it takes on hand to make hundreds of them.
I live in an area jam packed with mines, some of which had reported assays up to 300 oz/t silver, but right now, I'm happy even just mapping other people's mines and prospects, even if I never get to own a mine of my own.
If I am successful enough, I'll maybe end up with enough money to purchase one of the many hundreds of abandoned mines near me.

I’m really enjoying your channel and gaining tons of knowledge! I’m new to prospecting and trying to learn more about my local geology. I am trying to learn more about differentiating gold and silver sulphide and oxide ores. I would also like to know the difference in smelting processes for extracting the precious metals from the two. There are tons of designs all over the net. But you should understand theory and how to source, solder, use test equipment in particular osilloscope.
Agreed, but the majority of the designs are simple and were state of the art for the 1970s or 1980s - However, we've come a long way since then.

Its about gold, and about 90 percent of it applies to gold from anywhere.
hello brother, I'm looking for an accurate metal detector for the Yamashita treasure that can detect even 5 meters below, I saw legit signs engraved on the rock and pointing the direction but I don't have a detector so I can point to the correct location where it's buried if you can sponsor a detector for me to use, I will give a percentage of whatever I get from treasure.
No metal detector sees targets at 5 meters and deeper.

If a man had an old White master of coin so said anyway. Had possessed for 0ver 30 years...and had never worked. Looking now @ Seeing that the board itself is compromised is corroded on the back side. Like if a man could or would be able to clean and recoat that back side. Would it be worth even putting it back together or trying to fix or enhance? Heathkit was my dads favorite.
If it's corroded likely electric connections are damaged and if it never worked for years, cleaning is not going to help.

Anything is possible, if I can find a water line with a forket willow branch I am sure it is possible to build a metal detector
It's absolutely possible, it's that building electronic projects is a skill and you will need to come up to speed.

Not an encouraging video. Let's be a little more encouraging to the newcomer. Lots of things can be done with a little encouragement.
One thing leads to another but you need to be encouraged to start.
I would rather be honest than mislead. I do say that if you have experience with electronics projects that this is possible. But it would be very dishonest of me to say that if you have none or very little experience, that you should try it because it is an easy first project.
