Michael Clarke took 6 wickets for 9 runs in the second innings of the 4th Test against India at Wankhede Stadium in 2004. It was his first Test match in India, and he was only 22 years old at the time. Clarke's bowling figures were the best by an Australian in a Test match in India since Dennis Lillee took 6 for 13 in 1979. Clarke's performance not helped Australia to win this match. India won by 13 runs, but it was a major breakthrough in his career.

One of the reasons Australia were so strong in those days was that most of their batsmen were not batsmen - they were batting allrounders, thus enabling them to go into matches with only four specialist bowlers. Another closely related reason was how well their bowlers could BAT! Get past the six batsmen and Gilchrist, and you've still got Warne and Lee to deal with, and if even they fail, Gillespie will hold you up for ages and even possibly make a double hundred! The all-round capability of Australian cricketers, with most of them being able to give some sort of account of themselves in their non-specialist department of the game, is a result of Australian Grade Cricket.

Not one of these guys were considered batting all rounders. Clarke was for a while, but for most of his career, he was considered a genuine batsman.
So not sure where your myth that Australia were stacked with batting all rounders came from? At best, a couple of them were Batsman who could bowl a little bit.
@@StuTheDon17 It's not what they did. but what they COULD do if a need arose that was important in selectorial considerations. With a 4-man attack you have got to be confident that at least one of your batsmen could bowl a proper spell at a decent standard if someone got hurt, otherwise 4 becomes 3 and you are in deep trouble. Ponting, Clarke and Katich were all capable of bowling a proper 12-over spell at a good standard and, on the rare occasions it was asked for, it was delivered. Waugh and Waugh come to mind, also Darren Lehman and Marcus North. Much more recently, look how Travis Head - who rarely bowls - stepped up and bowled very, very adequately indeed when Lyon was badly injured and out of the attack. England's current analogue is Joe Root. Usually bowls just the odd over only BUT he can, and has, deliver a couple hours' worth of very worthy off spin should it become necessary.

If Clarke didn't have a dodgy back, he could have been an excellent all rounder. Sadly his back wouldn't allow him to bowl much.

Rudi Koertzen - easily the worst "good" umpire. By good I mean he was reputed as good but when you look back his games, he was very ordinary. In DRS days, his decisions would easily be 50-50

It was turn and Bounce in the wicket. However Clark is not a professional Bowler.
Decent bowling but pretty much a lucky break. Ponting's catch was a blinder, and Dravid's dismissal was just awful umpiring. A couple of those decisions would be easily overturned by DRS. These instances show how important this technology is.
