What do you think about the floyd rose and humbuckers, do you like or hate them?

    • @Mr.Goldbar
      @Mr.Goldbar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Kinda disagree on him. I do try to reach out and discover more trems than just Floyds, even though I'm most at home on them, but saying that his rusty 6 point dinosaur is better than a Floyd is objectively wrong because a Floyd was designed to take a serious beating, a modern non locking 2 point is even better sometimes, a vintage Strat trem is meant for soft vibratos and not divebombs (my old 93' Japanese Ibanez RG stays in tune better than 2000-3000 vintage specs Strats I tried).
As for humbuckers, I'm kind of in between, I like both for different things. I have guitars with basically almost every pickup configurations but I left my Strat with 3 single coils because that's what imho it meant to be. For stuff that's heavier than Deep Purple I only use humbuckers, but sometimes I split them for interesting sounds.

It's all personal taste-Though I am not fan of Floyd's myself.
I also agree that generally speaking single-coils do create more clarity and better harmonic response in the notes you play, and that humbuckers can lose that clarity, and get muddy. However, you have other elements that contribute to the overall tone: I.e.: Wood, Pedals, Amp, Etc.

He does get a little goofy with statements like, "All the harmonic response is in the headstock." Yngwie, baby, please.🙄 However, even EVH said that switching from a Fender trem to a Floyd was a compromise in tone for better tuning stability. Personally, Floyds sound tinnier to me, too. I don't think he's completely wrong, it's just a question of whether you'd rather trade a little tone for tuning, or trade tuning for a little tone. Personal preference.
As for the humbuckers, Yngwie has used them on a limited basis throughout his whole career, to this day! Further seeing, his single coils are humbucking anyway! I think he just speaks in hyperbole all the time. I mean his entire essence is drama. The music, the attire, the personality is all over the top. It's not out of character for him to exaggerate everything he says. He can't just say he prefers single coils to double coils, he has to make it sound like double coils are the worst idea since chocolate-covered ants. But even he can't resist the allure of a Les Paul with PAFs or a classic Flying V, of which he owns both.

“All the harmonic response is in the headstock”. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Also, he doesn’t like humbuckers because he says they’re “muddy” compared to single coils. Stop living in the past Yngwie. That may have been true 40 years ago. But certainly not today. First of all, a “stacked single coil” is NOT a true single coil. What you have there champ is a stacked humbucker. By “bucking the hum” with a dummy coil underneath you have just defeated the whole true single coil sound. The magnetic window is only a small part of a true single coil sound. Not the entire story. Try a Seymour Duncan Full Shred or Screamin’ Demon or Pearly Gates. Or even a Dimarzio Humbucker From Hell. Those pickups tone slays any vintage or modern true single coil pickup and the lows are even tighter. I’ve loved Yngwie playing since Alcatrazz. He knows the fretboard inside and out. But his opinions about the harmonic content being in the headstock and humbuckers being muddy make him sound like a typical kid that reads something on a guitar forum by some other kid and takes it as fact.

The stacked single coils sound more like a single coil to me than a straight humbucker. Might not be the same exactly as a single coil, but it's not the same sound as a humbucker either. Those humbucker you mentioned sound nothing like anything close to Yngwies sound (maybe if you split them), so you're really just recommending your own preference. I suppose it gave you an opportunity to correct him though 😉 I get the sense that was what's really important to you.

All these musicians are not bad guys( maybe personally who knows) , but as in general they have a right to an opinion..about either guitar tones or guitar players.. like Yngwie only playing single coil and someone like EVH or Zakk Wylde playing mostly humbuckers..so we get different soundscapes... different music.it's better if everyone has their own opinion on certain things otherwise music in general wouldn't be appealing at all..

Italian, classic guitarist, Vittorio Camardese did the two handed tapping earlier than Harvey Mandel, 3 years earlier, in 1965. Of course Van Halen (may he be in purgatory at least- prayers for his eternal soul), pioneered (pioneered meaning, made it mainstream, made it big time, made it relevant, made it matter). the two handed tapping of course:

I hate Floyds. When I need a vibrato bridge, I use Kahlers, it fixes the problems I have with Floyds. Floyds cut up a lot of the body, I like shaping my own nuts, I don't like that Floyds will go out of tune if you rest your hand on the bridge. Also if you have very low action (like I do), if you pull up on the Floyd it frets out. Floyds also have a very stiff feel that I don't like. The Kahlers get rid of all of these problems. Also, I like the fact that you can pick what materials the bridge is made of. Brass or steel rollers, cam, etc. I like having the 3 high strings with brass rollers for more warmth, and the bottom 3 string rollers steel for more brightness and harmonics. I love Yngwie's playing, but he's full of it when he says his Fender trems don't go out of tune. I've seen him a lot and they do go out of tune. I think he changes guitars so frequently during a show that he maybe doesn't notice, or that's the reason he changes them so we don't notice. Love him or hate him, his interviews are fun to listen to, and he changed what metal guitar playing can be.

I used to play it by ear, which it turns out, while roughly right, missed a heap of cool stuff. Joe is the king of lead guitar, I don't think anyone has straddled the gap between technical shredding and playing with feeling as Satriani has.
Many players incorporate elements of both, but end up being mostly one side than the other.
Yngvie, for eg. 99% technicality,1% feel. Gilmore? 75% feels, 25% tech. Gary Moore? 70% feels, 30% tech. Slash? 60% feel, 40% tech. Vai? 75% tech, 25% feels.

      50% tech, 50% feel.
      Noone balanced it better.
I think many ppl don't give him a proper listen because he's an instrumentalist - there's no song to sing along to, no vocal hook, no chorus.
So basically only guitar players who take lead guitar at least somewhat seriously, are going to be the ones on the "Satch Train" .

...If that sort of metaphor can fly..!
Certainly I know that type of player, and I'm no fan either. its fun to see maynard criticize satriani when he doesnt know anything about music. also saying musicians are "too one-dimensional" when every tool song is exactly the same over and over.
