Bird captures so much sadness in this beautiful performance. Hugely expressive. A volcanic outpouring of modest, reflective expression. Even sounding slightly bitter in the odd moment at life’s hardships. Such a great and completely timeless artist.

I started listening to Charlie Parker about 1980. Since then, all of his music has become an addiction to me. I love the original Loverman but this one was well timed and precise.

Different sound from most of the recordings I've heard. Darker and buzzier. But unmistakably CP. Emotional. Very hip. Balancing the melody with flights of improvisation. I had the honor to meet Red Rodney once when he visited Barry Harris' Jazz Cultural Theater. Just a very nice guy. Of course, great jazz musician. RIP Albino Red!

There is only one version of Loverman, and this is it. I bought the record when I was 15 and still have it... this was Charlie Parker Bird at his finest, with the wonderful piano of John Lewis (the founder of the Modern Jazz Quartet with Milt Jackson on vibes) and trumpeter Red Rodney (I met him in Chicago at a club concert) and the drummer Kenny Clarke (Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland orchestra in France) with his amazing drumming with just the brushes. I play this Loverman frequently, why do I constantly play it, I say to myself... because it is a wonderful jazz version of Loverman on alto saxophone by the Man himself, Charlie Parker. Be careful he did other versions, but this is the one... The only other jazz playing in my mind is Stan Getz at the Shrine version of Loverman, Getz's tenor with Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone... I just cannot say enough about this track here, for me it was the beginning of my love for modern jazz classics...
I should also mention Ray Brown who played so long with Oscar Peterson... sorry I just cannot stop talking about it...Charlie Parker my Man in Jazz History. I see from the reviews many people feel the same way... I will play it again for the melody and solos
