- MAURICE RAVEL Quartet in F major
Stephen Kim, violin
Brandon Garbot, violin
Zsche Chuang Rimbo Wong, viola
Summer Hu, cello
Performed on Wednesday, May 4, 2016
Field Concert Hall, Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia
Ravel’s sole string quartet was a product of his time at Paris Conservatoire and was dedicated to his beloved teacher, Gabriel Fauré. It was premiered in 1904 and met with mixed reviews, but Claude Debussy sent a note of encouragement to the young composer: “In the name of the gods of music, and in mine, do not touch a single note of what you have written in your quartet.”
Ravel’s string quartet can be considered a reaction to Debussy’s own string quartet that was written nearly a decade earlier. The piece builds upon Debussy’s “Impressionist” qualities and vibrant tone colors, while also embracing classical form and tradition. The outer two movements follow standard sonata form, while the inner two movements exhibit an exotic and improvisatory flair. Ravel’s first major work is a delight for its audience, from its lush opening chords to its joyous conclusion.

It doesn't even sound like 4 instruments. It just sounds like 1 big string instrument. Bravo
Favorite recording of this piece 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 And I admire the cellist, she is clearly having so much fun playing!
Yep, cellist is such a badass xD She's killing it
They're so comfortable playing together. I wanna be in a band that vibes like this
That ain’t a band
@@ItbeReyhe never said it's a band, he said he WANTS to be in a band that vibes like this quartet.

Bravo! Great ensemble playing!
I really like this performance, it has a good mix of delicacy and expressiveness. I find many performances of this piece missing something, but this just hits the spot!
i really like this tune.

Can you imagine! Faure,Debussy,Ravel all alive and working. No WW1 or 2,no Russian Revolution,no Holocaust. One could still believe in Beauty.
What a time that must have been, to be an Impressionist.
the russian revolution is the most beautiful thing to ever come out of russia
Curtis Institute, one of the finest ensembles...I love the use of the plucked notes in the 2nd movement. Great Romantic chamber music composition... it's amazing how the players switch so quickly between bowed and plucked notes ..all the players look young...which prbly accounts for such an energetic performance...
romantic ?
Definitely not romantic era - unless you mean to describe it as ‘romantic’, as in romance.
wow what a great performance, Ravel would be happy to hear this and so am I
Maurice Ravel lovingly dedicated his exquisite String Quartet in F Major "To my dear master, Gabriel Fauré." After hearing the the piece premiered, Fauré kindly gave his assessment: “Stunted, badly balanced, and in a nutshell, a failure.”
