I have been a die hard Lea Salonga fan half my life. The fact that she's a Filipina just makes me giddy to share some cultural history with such an iconic Asian woman. If I'm not mistaken she's also the first Asian woman to win a Tony award...

Lea (pronounced LAY-ah) is from the Philippines, born 1971. She began performing at age 7 as a kid in a production of THE KING AND I. She has had a long, varied career: theater, film, TV, albums, and concerts. She became internationally known when she originated the leading role of Kim in MISS SAIGON on London at age 18. (The creators of the show had done a worldwide search for their leading lady and finally found Lea at age 17 and a lot of other original cast members in the Philippines.) She did the role in London and then on Broadway and won all the major awards for her performances: Olivier, Tony (first Asian actress to win), Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Theatre World Awards. Lea was the first Asian to play Eponine in LES MISERABLES on Broadway (she went into the show in 1993) and was asked to play Eponine in the LES MISERABLES 25th Anniversary Dream Cast concert in 1995 (the video you reacted to). Lea went into the LES MISERABLES Broadway revival as Fantine in 2007 and was part of the LES MISERABLES 25th Anniversary Concert as Fantine in 2010. I think Lea was one of the only performers to be in both anniversary concerts and playing different roles. Lea is the singing voice for Jasmine from "Aladdin" ("A Whole New World") and Mulan ("Reflection") - I think the only woman to voice two Disney princesses. Just some of the reasons that many Filipinos consider her a national treasure and that she put the Philippines on the map.

Rachelle Ann Go is a Filipina performer who has done a lot of musical theater in the Philippines and was Gigi in the West End and Broadway revivals. Lea encouraged her to audition for the revival of MISS SAIGON.

Lea had broken her leg the month before and cancelled most of her upcoming engagements, but since this was something short and didn't require travel out of the country, she kept this guest appearance.

Regine Velasquez is called "Asia's Songbird" and considered Queen of the Belters in the Philippines. She is 10 months older than Lea (birthday April 1970) and has been working since the mid-80s. Most Filipino singers of the last 20-30 years consider Regine an inspiration (a la Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey - and Regine has sung the hits by all those women). Regine did an online birthday concert fundraising for a favorite charity of hers and asked Lea to duet with her, though they each recorded their parts separately in advance.
Lea is a musical theatre GOAT. She participated in the 10th and 25th Anniversary concerts of Les Mis. And her I Dreamed a Dream... brilliant. And yes, she is most certainly a Disney Princess too

I saw Les Mis on Broadway about 4 times in the 1990s, and must’ve seen her each time. I didn’t know her name back then, but she was amazing.
I can’t believe she’s 50 now.
I wore out the double CD set from the 10th anniversary concert. She is also the singing voice of Princess Jasmine and Mulan! Also in this same concert, Judy Kuhn is Cosette, and she is the singing voice of Pocahontas!
She is one of the best female singers I’ve ever heard and that includes legends like Elaine Paige and Keala Settle. Lea definitely has her diction like a machine gun accuracy and can do it at a mouse whisper or a full belt and still get it absolutely perfect !! A true Masterclass and one to always go and see whenever you can as live just takes it up a few levels !!! I first saw her on her debut in Miss Saigon playing Kim in London, her West End debut as well as the debut for the show too so tons of pressure all round and she hit it out the park !! She might have only been about 18-19 at the time but she is was fearless and powered her way through every emotion you could think of and by the time they hit my fave song The Last Night Of The World …. I was in tears !!! She had broken most of us by that point and her story was ours and she was pulling us along and willing for a positive ending for her and her son …. AMAZING !!! She is my favorite female singer. She does the best performance of this number hands down. it's a singing lesson by one of the best. She was the first Filipina artist to perform this in the show (Les Mis). She did Reflection in Mulan and is the Princess in the original "Aladdin". I believe she is the only double Disney Princess. She was also the first Filipina artist to win a Tony for "Miss Saigon". Listen to a song called "Two Words" she sang to her husband at her wedding. Also her cover of "Someone Like You" and "Don't Cry for Me Argentina, and best of all "Movie in my Mind" from

You were so right when you said, "Words cannot describe what we just listened to", or words to that effect. It doesn't matter how many times you may listen to this MASTERPIECE, your feelings will remain the same. As the video continues you are made aware (by your heart) that you are listening to greatness. I have made it my choice to tell everyone about this performance and in many cases I play it for them and, like you and I, they are stunned (another word you used which, if you could only use one word to describe what we heard, it would be 'stunning')..

Lea is the very top of Broadway stars. Beginning with her starring role in Miss Saigon, everything she has done since is just perfection personified. She is very much known for her careful and clear diction as you noted. Also, the amount of emotion she puts into her performances is just amazing.

I'm leaving this comment not for the video creator because I'm sure he already knows by now, but for those coming here to watch the video. Salonga is now in her 50s, like me, and she started her career in Broadway when she played the role of Kim in "Miss Saigon," a role that she was cast in when she was 17, 18, and for which she won a Tony.
She's the first ever asian woman to win a Tony. She won Best Actress for her role as Kim in Miss Saigon.

No performer has ever affected me the way Ms. Leah Salonga has. It’s pure magic. It’s like a cake without the icing yet it is the best tasting and most delicious sweet you have ever tasted. Lea Salonga is a damned goddess. This whole performance is beautiful. It's the Dream Cast concert for the 10th anniversary of the musical, and it has all the best performers of each part. Colm Wilkinson, Philip Quast, Ruthie Henshall, Lea Salonga, Michael Ball, etc. It's well worth a watch, even just on your own. (heh)
And oh man, if you're going to start doing musicals, I'd suggest finding more by Lea Salonga from the musical Miss Saigon, plus of course I have to request some Hamilton, but if you want just the mainly singing parts of it, I'd really suggest a double reaction of "Helpless" and "Satisfied" as they blend into each other and if you only did one, they wouldn't have the same emotional punch if you hadn't seen the other. There's also "One Last Time", "Hurricane" and "Burn" for good measure. "Defying Gravity" from Wicked is also good.

I am going to keep bugging you until you check out Kevin at age 17 at Carnegie Hall in a program called from the top. He plays the saxophone and you will learn a lot more about him. By the way he also speaks Mandarin. He is super smart as well as super talented!!!!!
