I like to think that the way Patches keeps himself from going hollow is that he believes so strongly in the idea of being unbreakable. Due to this he's basically made the Undead Curse work for him so he'll pretty much stay immortal forever. That's why he laughs at you because your quest is finite. You'll lose the battle in the end, while he won't.
@@alcot8620 curious how gael and patches are canonically the ones who could have made it to the end of the world Patches being summoned in the halflight boss could mean he has acess to that place meaning he has made it that far. so if he made it that far to the doors of filianores resting place itself, what could have stopped him to break filinores spell? Makes me think he actually cannonically faced gael Curiously enough they both "cooperate" in the demon prince bossfight because you can actually summon them both, did they ever met? Did patches cannonically beat gael? My theory is that after you bring the pigment of dark souls and the new painted world is done, you and the survivors will move to the new painted world. Except for Patches. Patches will stay in the old world and witnessing as the world falling deeper and deeper into chaos.
Imagine if this was the cutscene we never got after killing gael. You and Patches, stark opposites, the last people to remain at the end of dark souls.
The only problem would be that after we kill Gael we get the pigment of the dark soul, which resides into all humans and undead. So to have acquired the Dark Soul all humans must have died. We are the last human, the last pygmy. We are the Dark Soul
I love that back in dark souls 1 he talks about how he hates clerics, and then after his last encounter in, as of right now, the end of the series, he can be summoned to fight the church. He finally gets to fight the clerics he hates so much.
It would make a great end for the series. Glimmering over all that has been and yet you still have to face the Last trials yourself. Not with the spear of the church but with this pityful slaveknight that is thirsting for the dark soul of humanity. You have to go to the end of the world. Without even knowing it at this Point. All you have done: Killing the gods and their descsents, defeating their watchful Guardians and protectors, being fooled by everyone around you. You the one that has become bigger than the gods themself by Killing more than one Dragon in your journey. Anihillating demons and even the abyss all by yourself. YOU the Chosen undead, the beerer of the curse, the unkindled one. You choose to stay strong after all you've been through. Has it been alone, with your friends or even with the Phantoms of some ruggish bastard Like Patches himself. You made it through it after all. I hope all the best of luck for every Souls-Veteran Out there Reading this. May the odds be in your favor.
This comic always makes me emotional. The way Patches, at the end of the world, tells the story of the Dark Souls series in such a fitting way, putting it all into perspective, will always make me nostalgic for all the hours I've put into my beloved franchise. Somehow, this comic captures who Patches is perfectly. The narration is spot on both in terms of prose and how fitting it is to the character.
Ever since playing the Ringed City, I loved the ideas that somehow, after everything, the only people to withstand all the way to the end of the world are you and Patches; the gods are long dead, and you kill the last demon and the last dragon in the city. The only thing that remains are those who still had something to fight for; patches who fights for himself and you who fights simply because you enjoy it
the part of the soul of cinder in my opinion says that the fire is fading but the power of ancients still remains and soul of cinder rapresents you. Your travel, your experience, your fights, YOUR SOUL. And in the second phase soul of cinder transforms into the being that started all of this and fights with the other lords.
@@strangething7379 I always consider why you fight for, why you go to the end of the world, I suppose to fullfill what Gael's cant acomplish by himself, to end his oath to his lady. And maybe because you also believe in the last hope this world has, the paint of the young lady. The protagonist fights for a future? Or for a duty?

If this isn’t dark souls I don’t know what is. A man with no morals or convictions that lives only for himself speaking out how hopeless it all is. And yet, no matter how painful it is to grasp onto hope we as players keep pushing forward from being killed by rats to killing gods.
The perfect example of a nihilist. Not seeing value in doing anything at all. Rather pathetic IMO. People like him don't realise that for every progress in things like medicine & technology, winning wars, succeeding in a competition or career, or... linking flames , countless other attempts, people, lives will fail/have to be sacrificed (but once it's done it will benefit/influence far more lives in a good way than those that were lost). To borrow a methaphor from Nietzsche: Humanity is like a tree, the higher its branches want to grow above the more its roots will have to reach into the abyss below.

Because if I'm bound to go hollow, and lose everything I've ever known, then I want to see what this world has left. The joy, the sorrow, the anger, the regret, the hopes, the darkness, everything. Maybe then I won't feel bad when it ends for me. Or I'll just laugh at the absurdity of it all. But until that time, there's some clerics that need a swift kick. You coming, you old grave robber?
I would answer with: "Fun." "I'd rather enjoy what's left of my humanity conquering the challenges that this dying world still can provide than hide a hole and wallow in depression until i turn hollow."
That is just another greed, you just want to fight for you own Sense of battle,I think that the correct answer is “Because we humans”.And if you think about it,it is makes sense.Above all gods or species only humans a biggest threat to Gwin.Because humans always want to find a hope to grab it even then abyss is above them.Gods have their sacred duty, dragons too, warriors of different lands such as Gael too,but only humans are born without duty and they understand that they seek furiously, someone tries to obtain knowledges to satisfy his greed for purposes of living, another type helps gods, others just live to their primitive emotions such as family, lust, etc. But only pathes understand how stupid it is,he doesn’t want anything he just a shadow of this world he don’t seek power or purpose for living,he just lives and don’t do anything because it doesn’t matter all things in this world is just a way they are,so why you should risk everything for nothing in end?At the end even the gods despair and don’t give a shit about they sacred duty, faith is no longer a sacred thing but just a weapon, people are crashed the don’t know what to do,someone as Gael’s still tries to hang for hope but we know it is useless,it is the end no hope,no faith, nothing it is the end you can’t do anything to prevent it and nothing that will make you better then other all you can is just meet it as pashes do,just be ok with it,but not for humans, they can’t drop the fire in their hands even then abyss in their hurts, whey fight in useless battles, they defer gods and no matter how they try to prevent this end or find something for their wants, but it is just A WAY WE ARE we can’t do it in another way we always seek reasons to live...
Funny Valentine You make it sound like a bad thing? What’s wrong with a little greed here in there? The reason humanity lasted as long as it did was because people took risks to achieve what they wanted. Sometimes it worked, most of the time it didn’t. Sure, all good things must come to an end, but, so what? Why should that matter in the moment? Some would rather just sit back and watch other undead get crushed into oblivion by otherworldly demons and gods, but where is the fun in that? At some point, even if I was adamant about not trying to get myself killed, I know I would start thinking, “I want to fight that Stray Demon over there.” If I die while doing it, cool. I will die knowing that I could enjoy my life to the fullest the way I wanted to. If I live, even better. I get to practice on an even stronger for to see how far I can make this go. Is it a meaningless interest in a world that is experiencing an existential collapse? Probably, and? I just want to enjoy myself a little.
DustyO'Rusty i didnt said it wrong but i meant that the correct answer is mine because it covers all humanity wants, from yours of battles to very hight of knowledges
I keep watching this over and over again and I think I know why This comic describes our character perfectly We don’t know Why does our character do this in d1, d2, and d3 We don’t know why our character wants this We know why we do But what does the undead we control wish out of all this
@@challenginghuntsman6916 well I believe that we play as the same character in all the games. That actually would clear up a lot of confusion with this question as it shows us what our character has seen, everything. They've seen the light being abused, the dark spinning out of control and knows that to fight for either one is fruitless, in DS1 keep in mind while they're only there as a favour for a man who saved our life, at the end we have seen what the light and dark offer, what it did to oolacile and anor londo. Hell maybe our character was there when humanity was first branded. In DS1 we link the fire likely because humanity needs more time to gain control of itself, granting us true death. Until DS2, where after nearly going hollow all we want at this stage is the right to true death, but in doing so learn what we have created by linking the fire: a cycle lasting thousands of years. We do succeed in DS2 and in DS3 we come back one last time to finish what we and Gwyn began. We traverse everything at world's end to fix our mistakes, the gods mistakes and humanities mistakes. And we do, we kill the lords of cinder and break the cycle, destroying the world but creating a new one, free of the gods. I just love this theory because it adds so much more weight to the player character imo
a SmartName ok fair enough but that doesn’t explain why the main character didn’t become a lord of cinder hell im 99% sure we fight our ds1 character as the finale boss in ds3
The use of Patches as an NPC in last DLC to really bring things full circle was incredible. We see him as a traitor and deviant throughout the series but our perspective is turned completely on it's head when we analyze his intentions and motivations. He actually seems like the most sane person in world of death and chaos.
The comic works really patches speaking since he's been around since Dark Souls 1 and is probably one of the oldest beings in the series. Would've also loved to see Patches and Gael fight considering that Gael is consuming the dark soul and humanity is fragments of it
“Why?” “Because I’ve met all the people you’re talking about. And because I met you. “All of you made me laugh in triumph and despair. I’ve cried proud and bitter tears in turn. I’ve beaten and been beaten, but time and time again it’s my…no, our souls coming into contact that gives them light and purpose. I’d say that’s why. “You’re not as untethered as you think, Patches. You’ve met us all just the same as I’ve met them. You’ve bled and wept alongside us, too. Admit it. It wouldn’t be as much fun to kick a bastard off a cliff if he didn’t have the soul to care, eh?”
I really want Patches in Elden Ring. I don't care what leap in logic is employed, I just want him there. For, as irritating as it was to be kicked off cliffs by him, Patches is still my favorite character.
@@Cairo40000 He kinda already is. He debuted in an armored core game where he was Patch the Good Luck and used a sniper rifle(basically the gun version of a spear) and has so far also appeared in demon's souls, ds1 and 3, and bloodborne. Heck, an expy of him even appeared in Sekiro.

I appreciate that. I’ve been wanting to do more of these kinds of dubs for a while. But the last few years have been a struggle for me too. Keep your chin up. Us Ashen and Tarnished are tough.
Why Patches? Because if we don’t who will? Besides I need purpose to not go hollow and it might as well be a historical and legendary purpose. Now help me fight the people and monsters in here.
why? because why not, in a world where my only ending is death, insanity, or both why not? why not try that little bit harder to save just one more life? why not give everything I will be, or have been so someone else could have a chance to be more? because one day I will lose it all anyway, so I might as well lose myself doing the right thing.
In a world that is losing any and all hope for survival, one where the abyss is unstoppable, the darkness is inevitable, where millions upon millions of undead are sacrificed to preserve the power of the first flame and the few who were once gods, humanity was suppressed within undead (resulting in the forced reliance on white souls to maintain some semblance of identity and sanity, as well as thee forced siphoning of humanity into firekeeper who are in constant agony from their gnawing), and humanity was long since separated from the abyss (meaning that the abyss no longer recognizes humanity and is hostile towards it). In the end, there is almost nothing worth fighting for, there is no true glory in igniting the flames, the age of man is pointless (because everything else is basically dead), we don't really know what the dark brings (is the abyss technically the same as the darkness?), there is hardly anyone in the world left that isn't hollow (that also doesn't want to kill you at the very least), the world will eventually turn to ash, and nothing will be left. Helping Gael make the painting might be the only true way to save whatever or whoever is left, but that begs the question, how long will that last? The scraps of the painting are very small, and unless they are actively being preserved, there is no way that the worlds within can last long. You can try to help people along your way, but there is only so much you can do to help the broken people that are left. You might be able to save them (which is reasonable if you can actually immerse yourself within the character's place), but to what extent?
@@le_mothman Not really, by linking the flame you only continue with the age of the Gods (Lords of fire or cinder) and don't let the age of humanity come.

I’ll say, I usually don’t care so much for youtube comic dubs but this one surprised my expectations. You really managed to make the dialogue actually feel like an authentic piece of conversation rather than an overly dramatised reading of script. I loved the sequence where the three "crestfallen" NPCs are shown. The first one has completely given up, and is shown in a bleak light. The second, Saulden, while having giving up himself is not completely without hope, and you can see him looking thoughtfully at the lands around him, perhaps wondering if he can actually do something. And finally Hawkwood, who found new purpose in the Path of the Dragon, standing at the top of Archdragon Peak, at the zenit of his new adventure.
Why? Why not? The world itself is dying. What else is there to do, but see *just* how loudly I can scream agaisnt the yawning abyss? Because I can see if I can do what even the *gods* couldn't at the *height* of their power. Because if *death itself* is but an inconvenience, why not see just what I can accomplish? So I can say I slew the last dragon. The last demon. The last gods. So that even in this decaying land, truly, vile, horrendous, *evil* beings like Aldrich or Sulyvhan don't go without retribution for their crimes. And for me, personally? So I can end this cycle, stop the madness, and let the world *rest.* So that I can know, that even if no one remembers my name, my deeds, or even my *existence,* that I made a *difference* for this world; that I can stare at the last sparks of a dying Flame within the Keeper's palms, and be content in the knowledge that it's *finally over,* and the Dark Sign will never brand anyone ever again, and that one day, *someone* will be there to see those tiny, distant emebers past the horizon bloom into something *grossly incandescent,* and then bask in its warming glow.

I played the series in 1, 3, 2 order. I awoke to be Chosen. Back as the Ash. knuckled through the world's end. And came back...to see the frozen painting. And the end of the world, at the ringed city. Oh Patches. I knew when I was a petty thief...garbed in leather, who tried to be something more, finding and wearing the armor of the Paladin Leeroy. When I linked the fire. Awoke to ash, abandoned the faith, falling to misery and desperation. When the world was warping beyond my comprehension, and the only cure to the undead curse were magic relics...only useable for one. When we met at world's end. We're the same. Just on the opposite sides. For you are right. Desperation brings greed. And if the world was to end, oneself could live until it so long as one other undead existed. But so long as one breathed, ever could hope spring eternal. The pessimist and the optimist at the end of it all. Couldn't have a better "friend".
DS1: I.. I want to be someone DS2: I don't want to lose myself, and if I can, prevent the same to someone else. DS3: Because in a world so fragile, where the dark that resides on the humankind. I want to be not the light to their ways.. but the one who can show them if they stay still to their hopes, you can become more stronger than before. Even in the end of the times.
Elden ring: I did all of this because.....its may only change to start something new and decide what its right for this world, like make evreyone find peace in death by a deep sleep (fia ending), to rot evreting make people show there no heaven but only nothing (dung eater ending for my point) to continue a era of light and hopes (golden orden ending), burn evreting by the flames of caos whit madness and pain (chaos ending) or start a new era that even me or the gods dosen't know but maybe its the right choise whit someone who understand me and se me more then just like a tarnished or a friend (ranni ending plus my choise and my favorite).
This also shows that patches was a bit less of a bastard and stayed true to his “no matter what’s happens, let’s be friends” statement before he regained his memory
You know, patches is a great character. To me when i first thought of him i felt like this man is dark souls in the form if an npc. he'll punish you for being blindly greedy but if you take your time and think before you act you'll realize that your greed was holding you back. It was weighing you down and harming more than helping. He shows you this in game, he also shows that some mistakes can lead you to better outcomes or even in the right direction. You make the mistake of trusting him in DS1 and for it you are kicked into a pit down in the catacombs but that leads you to a skull lantern (if you weren't lucky) making the place more manageable. He truly is an amazing character and one that is my favorite of all time
Patches seems to be that one guy who plays the Devil but at the same time gives you the best gains when you get through the bull he shoves at you. What intend to say is that he may be an ass but you can bet he’s honest in what he says. Surprisingly trustworthy in a sense too.
The reason is the same for why we're playing it right now: To take what joy can be found in this moment, this time that is ours. Maybe we'll succeed and the world will be saved. Maybe we'll fail and the world will end. Maybe there's no meaning to any of it. But life is a blank canvas, and even a terrible painting is better than a space intentionally left blank.
It would be super awesome if there ever was a Dark Soul 4 that Patches is your Tutorial but not in a traditional sense. For instance he trolls you and messes with you throughout the "Tutorial Level" and by the end after being put thorough embarrassing and down right cruel situations, you end up fighting him and he turns out to be genuinely strong and not to mess with. After beating him he just gently sits down and goes "Your Welcome" This means that he put you through hell to prepare you for what's worse. I think that would be pretty neat.
@@ashwolf2006 iirc, I do remember Mizayaki saying he's done with the series but is willing to let somebody else to continue it if they're up for the task.

The genius about this comic is that even if you place yourself into the shoes of the Ashen One and give Patches your own answer as to why you press on, his reaction would never change. There isn't anything you can say that can impress him or change is demeanor but that also means that he completely understands where you're coming from no matter what your background or ideals are. No matter what your answer is, Patches will have heard it all before.
i think that soul of cinder is the boss more near to you. It rapresents your experience, your battles, your choice, YOUR SOUL. and in the second phase become the thing that started all of this and created you.

Well, I guess if I had to answer Patches... It's not always about what I have to to gain, but rather, what's already been lost, and what's still left to stand up for. Ludleth. Hawkwood. Seigward. The old woman in the Dreg Heap. And then there are those who are still here, who are depending on me to keep going: Andre. Cornyx. Karla. Irina. Yorshka. Gael. The Painter. The Firekeeper. Even you, Unbreakable Patches. I do it for all of you.
Thank you for voicing this. As soon as I read this comic, months ago, I was looking for a dub of it, and I couldn't find it. Then out of the blue, it suddenly popped up today. This was amazing.
This hits really close to me, i never wanted kids or get married, i've been alone most of my days, i go to work and college every day, but i aways keep asking myself:"why?".
I commented on a similar video like this but I like to think Patches is the real furtive pygmy who survived all this time. The first human, the first survivor.
You know, when we think about the characters who made their name known up to this point. It's quite remarkable. Artorias' soul embedded in the wolf blood as he lives on in every abysswatcher. Slave Knight Gael serving endlessly in search of the blood of the dark soul. Or Andre who perpetually pounds a sword for a lofty champion. But no one holds a more resilient presence than patches the "unbreakable".
Fun Fact: When you summon Patches during the Radahn fight, he actually unsummons himself after a bit. It's theorized the reason is because he sees how you are using summons like fodder.
this both tells how long patches has been around and just how knowledgeable he is a perfect way to depict the character of him and all he knows so brilliantly, and yet your answer is even more brilliant to his question. perfection simply perfect.
There is something that gives me hope on Dark souls but makes me lose it on Demon’s Souls. On Dark Souls an undead can die as much as he pleases. On demon’s Souls it seems it ends when you die as a phantom lorewise
Man its been years since i beat the souls series and i still find myself looking back at it all and just wish for more Stuff like this comic just remind me every time i watch this why i love the souls series
I love how beautifully remade the world of Dark Souls is, in comic form. There's actual color in here, instead of some yee-yee-ass filter that borders on the comically-depressed. It doesn't even make the game any less depressing or hopeless. If anything, the contrast between this constant beauty throughout would pair wonderfully with how dark the narrative is, in making the locales and their inhabitants feel alive. Dark Souls is a tragedy, after all. We should at least get a visual glimpse of what it was like in grander times. As a bonus, it also makes the atmosphere a lot sadder. There is still profound majesty everywhere you go, an ever present reminder of what you're fighting for. Just because the pallette isn't as bleak as the story, doesn't mean that it should be any less beautiful, no?
I'm subbed, but never know what to expect from this channel. It's either something deep and meaningful, or something funny. Either way keep it up man. Oh and first.
I'll do it for an Adventure that ends in futility. I'll do it for glory no one will acknowledge. I'll do it to see whats next. I'll do it just because. I'll do it over and over again until I turn hollow and stop my journey... Then I'll do it again for old times sake until the day I die. In short: Because I want to. I definitely am greedy. But I'm okay with that. I'll commit unspeakable crimes accidentally or not. I'll become the greatest hero no knows. I'm human after all.
I think that the correct answer is “Because we humans”.And if you think about it,it is makes sense.Above all gods or species only humans a biggest threat to Gwin.Because humans always want to find a hope to grab it even then abyss is above them.Gods have their sacred duty, dragons too, warriors of different lands such as Gael too,but only humans are born without duty and they understand that they seek furiously, someone tries to obtain knowledges to satisfy his greed for purposes of living, another type helps gods, others just live to their primitive emotions such as family, lust, etc. But only pathes understand how stupid it is,he doesn’t want anything he just a shadow of this world he don’t seek power or purpose for living,he just lives and don’t do anything because it doesn’t matter all things in this world is just a way they are,so why you should risk everything for nothing in end?At the end even the gods despair and don’t give a shit about they sacred duty, faith is no longer a sacred thing but just a weapon, people are crashed the don’t know what to do,someone as Gael’s still tries to hang for hope but we know it is useless,it is the end no hope,no faith, nothing it is the end you can’t do anything to prevent it and nothing that will make you better then other all you can is just meet it as pashes do,just be ok with it,but not for humans, they can’t drop the fire in their hands even then abyss in their hurts, whey fight in useless battles, they defer gods and no matter how they try to prevent this end or find something for their wants, you can understand it because, it is just A WAY WE ARE we can’t do it in another way we always seek reasons to live, even then it is useless...
...we forge our own destinies, denying any pre-laid destiny in favor of something that we can have for ourselves. I enjoyed reading your post, friend. Made me think.
You see pathes says "truly unbound" and "rubbish to one such as i,devoid of all worldly wants",he means that he doesmt have a duty,a sacred goal,a pupose to live, he is just walks around the world and dont do anything besides laughts on humans for their greed, greed in his opinion is wish to have a point in your life, and as we know each human has it,but not pathces he just wanders around the world no family,no money,no purpose he is okey just to be in world, he saw how people bound themselves by their greed but he is just a shadow whic wanders and has fun bulling othes for their greed because he finds purpose hilarious, but in reality he has no purpose he just a complete shadow walking around the world
All playable undeads have at first a clear goal, but I belive that while they explore the world and Interact with NPCs learning the facts of the world theirs goal change. (Especially onj DS3) The chosen Undead first want to prolongue the age of fire, but with dialogue the Undead may want to let the fire die, for it's normal that fire fades after burning.(and Oscar do it instead, nothing changes) The Bearer of the curse want to be free. But he/she can embrace the curse and walk in the Twilight betwen light and dark. And Ashes seeks flames. But it has various endings: relink the small flame, in the vain hope things won't change/ Accept and Inherit the natural darkness of humanity that was stolen by the gods, starting the dark age, by and for hollows/ let the fire die, destroying the first sin (the artificial relink of the flame) doing it so kicks the dark age, but another fire will appear, making a new cycle of a dance between light and dark/ And then there is the ringed DLC. The world burned soo long there is only Ashes, so you use it, together with a pigment, to paint a new world. A cold and gentle world were there can be peace.
@@JackBlack-qn7us it is the standard ending with the hollow lord and end of fire endings requiring you to find items or perform a complicated ass quest line to get.
Patches is an eldritch being able to walk between the fabric of countless worlds, how else do you think he appeared in demons souls, bloodborne, and now elden ring
@Just another Degenerate the only constants for each game is the poison level, patches, and the moonlight sword but the moonlight sword always has different lore and a slightly different look
I really like interpretation of player character as undead who one day choose that his way to counteract hollowing is to push onwards, manifest destiny through the crumbing world. Maybe going insane before hollowing is the measure to avoid it.
Patches may be right, the world in Dark Souls has no hope, no matter what endings you choose in each game, the world will turn into that place where you fight Gael. But the thing is, we can either make the world until then as good as we can, so we can at least know that we did our part and help 1 or 2 people on the way, or we can acheive things great enough to make our names legendary, in order to inspire other people, to make them try to be happy. It isn't impossible to be happy in a world like this...
I dont know what it is about this video that resonates within me but everytime i find myself feeling down i watch this video and by the end i find myself with a new sense of both gratitude and potential. To whoever uploaded this i thank you.
This comic and this voiceover did me dirty. I never thought I'd reach a day were I looked at Patches and thought "I'm going to miss this bastard", but here I am. Missing that bastard.
We have been sticking our nose to where it not belong for almost two decades From saving boletaria to trying fixing, to the point of hollowing, gwny mystake
Given that the entire series suppose to be a message against entropy, I believe that Patches is suppose to represent humanity - as in, humanity's desire for, and love for, life - Patches does not have any grand goal or huge destiny to fulfill, he just lives. He keeps going and never looks back: why? Because that is what it means to live, that is what it means to be human.
I dont know if you'll ever read this or not. But I just want to say thank you for this beautiful video. The comic by itself was already amazing. But your voice acting and the background music made me tear up. You captured patches amazingly and your music choice was perfect. It really made this so much more bittersweet.
Beautiful voice acting. You weigh the right words and just the right amount. Your pace isn't monotone and the different manners of speaking you use matche all the different sentences. Just sublime
A detail about him I only just really noticed, is that up until the Ringed City, all the way from the time of Gwyn to Prince Lothric, he's wearing the same armour and using the same spear and shield. He truly does have no wants. He wants for nothing and has all that he desires and never goes looking for an upgrade or a change of gear... ... until he finally does start to hollow at the end of time in the Ringed City, once there were no more fools to knock down a peg

Patches: *Slips* *on* *Horsehoof* *Ring*
Everyone from Boletaria to Yharnam: YOU FOOL
There’s always a Patches, always a cliff, and always a boot right up your ass.
I like to think that the way Patches keeps himself from going hollow is that he believes so strongly in the idea of being unbreakable. Due to this he's basically made the Undead Curse work for him so he'll pretty much stay immortal forever. That's why he laughs at you because your quest is finite. You'll lose the battle in the end, while he won't.
i can back this up. if you see the shield he has he is holding the curseward greatshield which was given to those who resisted the undead curse
@@alcot8620 curious how gael and patches are canonically the ones who could have made it to the end of the world
Patches being summoned in the halflight boss could mean he has acess to that place meaning he has made it that far.
so if he made it that far to the doors of filianores resting place itself, what could have stopped him to break filinores spell? Makes me think he actually cannonically faced gael
Curiously enough they both "cooperate" in the demon prince bossfight because you can actually summon them both, did they ever met? Did patches cannonically beat gael? The man who despises the greed of man vs the man who gave everything to reach its goal and lost himself in madness for the dark soul

@@HartlyLion I think the hole is kind of a representation of how literally hollow you become once consumed by the dark soul. He basically has no heart at that point

I want it to be the case.
Especially so if you chose to help him regain his memories.

Only respawnable boss too. Patches fight is the only one with eternal jolly co-operation.
I really want this as a cinematic cut-scene right before this fight,
@Daniel Veas Sánchez spears of the church, you can summon him there
And this would be the first time that your caratctor speks to answer the question

Damn patches is the Morgan Freeman of dark souls with that voice.

I’m just sweating through my eyes. YOUR MESSAGE WAS RATED GOOD!
My dear Patches, the question is not “Why?” but “Why not?”
Patches is the truest neutral throughout the entire series
DS1: I.. I want to be someone
DS2: I don't want to lose myself, and if I can, prevent the same to someone else.
Bloodborne: The people in my dreams tell me too
Wow, From "I've seen your Ilk" up until he asks "Why" could honestly work as a Great Villain's monologue before a final battle with a Hero.
He truly is an amazing character and one that is my favorite of all time
David from camp camp: "Because someone fucking has to."
Patches seems to be that one guy who plays the Devil but at the same time gives you the best gains when you get through the bull he shoves at you.
What intend to say is that he may be an ass but you can bet he’s honest in what he says. Surprisingly trustworthy in a sense too.
Khajiiti Manus How can dishonest people not be stupid too lol
Khajiiti Manus Course I know your only quoting someone but yeah
I like how they put stuff from Bloodborne in this comic due to Patches being in Bloodborne
I think that would be pretty neat.
too bad there wont be any dark souls game since this is the last of the series. but who know's maybe a successor will probably suffice.
@@ashwolf2006 iirc, I do remember Mizayaki saying he's done with the series but is willing to let somebody else to continue it if they're up for the task.
this it would be such a good tutorial as it teaches you the game doesnt pull punches hell even introduce you to mimics at the tutorial level by making you think its a chest
@@ashwolf2006 Yeah, Dark Souls is done. But we still have Bloodborne, and Demon's Souls to continue off of. Not to mention whatever comes after Elden Ring.
.
why? because why not, in a world where my only ending is death, insanity, or both why not? why not try that little bit harder to save just one more life? why not give everything I will be, or have been so someone else could have a chance to be more? because one day I will lose it all anyway, so I might as well lose myself doing the right thing.

Patches was always the closest thing us souls players had to a friend in these games
i think that soul of cinder is the boss more near to you.
It rapresents your experience, your battles, your choice, YOUR SOUL.
and in the second phase become the thing that started all of this and created you.
1:38 I really like the mocking way Patches says "Faithful duty?". It's a good line read
I'll admit, I burst out laughing at the Ashen One's answer. All that philosophical talk, and they shrug.
Edit: How did I get more than five times as many likes in a week than I did the entire year before?
But like, what other answer could he possibly give? As funny as it, that Shrug is the only answer there could possibly be.
@@XdefLovesMinecraft Is it ever stated that the Ashen One (or any player character) is mute? Even if one could argue they lost the ability to speak to hollowing, the Ashen One should still be able to speak by virtue of being unable to hollow without... well, without essentially giving themselves a Hollow Infusion, courtesy of Yoel.
I took that shrug specifically as: "Pssh, I don't know"
@@fiercedeity9955 I treat the shrug as the answers a player WOULD give, as it is as players we really dont know why we keep rekindling the fire and defeating bosses in the end we gain no tangible value from it yet we continue through the endless deaths we fight on and on to the end only to start again
@@vroknyr4592 Yeah, we don't really know why we constantly run this masochist creator over and over again...
Well, I guess if I had to answer Patches...
It's not always about what I have to to gain, but rather, what's already been lost, and what's still left to stand up for.
Everyone I'd lost, who died either helping me, or because they didn't have anything keeping them going.
Greirat. Horace. Anri. Eigyon. The friendly Giant in the Undead Settlement. Sirris. Orbeck. Ludleth. Hawkwood. Seigward. The old woman in the Dreg Heap.
And then there are those who are still here, who are depending on me to keep going:
Andre. Cornyx. Karla. Irina. Yorshka.
I'd rather burn up then grow old like the lords who hide in their broken thrones
This hits really close to me, i never wanted kids or get married, i've been alone most of my days, i go to work and college every day, but i aways keep asking myself:"why?".
Because if we’re to die one day, we go through life with no regrets.
We live life not because of purpose, but to prove that we indeed can do so. To live is to continue, until death takes us.
Because money
This deserves way more views I still feel the chills of patches talking as it shows the npcs that go most with what he is saying
Or maybe it’s because you’re fighting against the guy who HELD BACK the STARs
this both tells how long patches has been around and just how knowledgeable he is a perfect way to depict the character of him and all he knows so brilliantly, and yet your answer is even more brilliant to his question. perfection simply perfect.
I came expectin jokes about update patches
There is something that gives me hope on Dark souls but makes me lose it on Demon’s Souls. On Dark Souls an undead can die as much as he pleases. On demon’s Souls it seems it ends when you die as a phantom lorewise
Answer: bruh we payed 60 bucks we are going to end this game
Man its been years since i beat the souls series and i still find myself looking back at it all and just wish for more
Stuff like this comic just remind me every time i watch this why i love the souls series
This is why Patches is the best. He's always a troll but he also has a point.
Whoever voiced this... You did an amazing Job and got me quite nostalgic.
Thanks for the feedback!

I'm subbed, but never know what to expect from this channel. It's either something deep and meaningful, or something funny. Either way keep it up man. Oh and first.
5 Years Later and I still want this on my tombstone~
I'll do it for an Adventure that ends in futility. I'll do it for glory no one will acknowledge. I'll do it to see whats next. I'll do it just because. I'll do it over and over again until I turn hollow and stop my journey... Then I'll do it again for old times sake until the day I die. In short: Because I want to. I definitely am greedy. But I'm okay with that. I'll commit unspeakable crimes accidentally or not. I'll become the greatest hero no knows. I'm human after all.
“Why?”
“cos it’s fun.” *rolls away through tables*

...we forge our own destinies, denying any pre-laid destiny in favor of something that we can have for ourselves. I enjoyed reading your post, friend. Made me think.
It was my pleasure.
But we are all slaves to fate , are we not ? But alass that is only 1 perspective in a million . Still something to think upon .
bossbear the rock,yeah...
(Especially onj DS3)
The chosen Undead first want to prolongue the age of fire, but with dialogue the Undead may want to let the fire die, for it's normal that fire fades after burning.(and Oscar do it instead, nothing changes)
The Bearer of the curse want to be free.
I relit the last flame in DS3 cuz of bossfight, nothing else really.
@@JackBlack-qn7us it is the standard ending with the hollow lord and end of fire endings requiring you to find items or perform a complicated ass quest line to get.
How eager to face whatever is behind that door the ashen one is at 2:55 looks really cute.

Holy hell patches that's some deep stuff right there
Patches: "Well then, lead on..."
_The player proceeds to fall into another trap_
*Always Sunny In Philadelphia song plays*
Patches is an eldritch being able to walk between the fabric of countless worlds, how else do you think he appeared in demons souls, bloodborne, and now elden ring
@Just another Degenerate that theory doesn’t work for multiple reasons
What gets me the most is that there are players who have most likely been to EVERY ONE of the spots shown on the panels of the comic.
I feel like most would if you play through all three games
Now this reinforces the idea of me wanting a dark souls anime with very good budget and same soundtracks
Don't ruin ds.
And then Patches returned to his world just as the boss fight began.
I dont know what it is about this video that resonates within me but everytime i find myself feeling down i watch this video and by the end i find myself with a new sense of both gratitude and potential. To whoever uploaded this i thank you.
This single video holds so much lore and story
This comic and this voiceover did me dirty. I never thought I'd reach a day were I looked at Patches and thought "I'm going to miss this bastard", but here I am. Missing that bastard.

"Why?"
"Because everything is still alive, and that is unacceptable to me."
We have been sticking our nose to where it not belong for almost two decades
From saving boletaria to trying fixing, to the point of hollowing, gwny mystake
Given that the entire series suppose to be a message against entropy, I believe that Patches is suppose to represent humanity - as in, humanity's desire for, and love for, life - Patches does not have any grand goal or huge destiny to fulfill, he just lives. He keeps going and never looks back: why? Because that is what it means to live, that is what it means to be human.
The nostalgia just came right on in and made itself at home, I didn't know I needed this, thank you.
"Lead on" I half expected Patches to kick him off a cliff or something to get his belongings.
I dont know if you'll ever read this or not. But I just want to say thank you for this beautiful video. The comic by itself was already amazing. But your voice acting and the background music made me tear up. You captured patches amazingly and your music choice was perfect. It really made this so much more bittersweet.
Oh patches, if only you could be in Sekiro, then again, I don't think any of Sekiro's characters would understand you.
