The people cringing at the emotionality of the cast on the press tour clearly have never been in a theatre production. The bond created between cast and crew in a musical production is a trauma bond. You don't come out the same person as the one who went in. They've never held their co-stars and fellow crew members as they sobbed during an impromptu sing-along in the middle of Denny's at 3:00am in the morning after closing night and *IT SHOWS*.
Rent was also my heart opening/shattering doorway into musical theater. It spoke to my soul so intensely like nothing else had. I was peak tumblr girl at the time. My mom did a local production so I saw it live a few times and then saw the movie. Changed my life. I saw a broadway tour of it on my 17th birthday, like how serendipitous!!
I am absolutely new to this story. Never saw the musical and didn’t know anything about the story before I saw the movie. And it absolutely blew me away! I personally loved the colours, the set and costume design is out of this world. And you are soooo right about Jonathan … this genes didn’t joke around. I thought Ariana was really great but I fall in love with Cynthia‘s performance just so hard. Definitively gonna see it again in the cinema.
it’s so funny because people who are like pointing out Glinda‘s performance much more and like talking about Ariana Grande much more are literally doing what the themes of the movie is trying to teach you about like everyone knows she’s in the wrong but they’re like but glinda I don’t know if I should laugh or like be like yeah that’s what I expected but literally it gets me to me so much when people just mention Ariana and don’t mention Cynthia because Cynthia is subtlety is so impressive and also just like I think why Cynthia‘s character is not like this like crazy presence in the beginning of the movie is because she’s not herself she’s subduing herself and why I believe the second movie we are gonna get to see a lot more like Cynthia star energy is like at the end of the movie that’s the real elphie that power that star quality it comes when she becomes herself when she becomes truly the wicked witch
10000% i'm not surprised it's happening but I have been very disappointed with how many people refuse to hold Glinda accountable for her actions in the movie and I'm certain it stems from the same place that causes people to praise Ariana 24/7 without praising Cynthia.
I actually like the coloring of the film and totally get what the director meant about it being more real. It’s less cartoonish and more grounded. I think it looks cool.
I feel like a lot of people that don’t really like musicals or aren’t into them have one musical they love and wicked is that for me. I’ve seen it on stage three times and was hesitantly optimistic about the movie but I think they nailed it!
As a musical theater gay, you HAVE to watch Schmigadoon/Schmicago. Even if you are unfamiliar with the shows being referenced, it is a fun ride. And, the show has a connection to Wicked, since Kristen Chenoweth is in it.
One note on the colors. I heard somewhere that the reason that MGM chose ruby slippers and the bright shade of green for elphaba was to show off the technicolor, even though those were not in the original story. And as a result of them being MGM property, they weren’t used here. That may contribute to the less than favorable opinions of the color grading. I wasn’t paying close attention to that when I watched wicked though.
For the first time ever, I'm feeling like I missed out on the chance to be a theater gay 😭 I was a band gay (not really a thing 😂) so playing in the orchestra pit in the musicals instead of performing on stage. I feel like I missed out on a formative gay experience 😂
I appreciate your very preceptive and grounded review of the movie and everything around the movie. I’ve seen a lot of people riding the buzz and their reviews are subpar, comments are cynical and opinion tainted by things outside the movie. Great job!
To quote Huey Lewis - I'm happy to be stuck with you 😅 - Thank you for all the great videos you have put out these last months - you are truly a TH-cam highlight for me. Hope you are feeling better, soon! Cheers!
It was an experience. I had goosebumps. Never seen the musical(hope to someday). I still need to watch the substance. I feel like Cynthia stole the show for me.
I agree about the substance but I also keep forgetting that Robert eggers is going to swoop in at the very last second with nosferatu on Christmas Day 😂
Yea with the way that even the UK news outlets have been fully ignoring Cynthia in the press for this movie I kinda forgive her for the reaction she had to the fan edit. Yea was it a bit on the intence side but when even your own country is basically rendering you a non issue I can imagine getting initially angry at those things
I just have to say, first: bless the RENT love 🥰It feels like somewhere in the 2010s it became almost "trendy" to crap on RENT, and people just do not give it its due in terms of how incredibly much it changed the face of musical theater for generations to come. It was my gateway into musical theater fandom as well! (I do personally have some issues with the film adaptation, but I'll always love the movie for bringing back most of the original cast) I've always adored Wicked too though - I went through a huuuge Idina fandom phase so it was a natural progression from RENT to Wicked lol - and I couldn't be more happy with how much care was put into the film adaptation! Cynthia and Ariana are both truly perfect in the roles (and again, HUGE Idina fan here, so it's saying something that I'm every bit as obsessed with Cynthia's Elphaba too!). And yes, Jonathan Bailey 😍His gorgeousness aside, I knew he'd bring all new layers to Fiyero with his incredible acting chops, and I really did feel that already. Of course Part 2 is where I think they'll really have the most chance to dig deeper into his character, but even already, I was much more engaged by Jonathan's Fiyero that I've ever been with Fiyero before. Part of that's just the sheer level of charisma (and big bisexual energy hehe) he brought, but he also made me really care and want to know more about his inner world. But yeah, it's still very much Cynthia and Ariana's movie, as it should be, and they absolutely killed it on all fronts - I genuinely hope Cynthia especially has a real shot at not just an Oscar nomination but a win! Ariana absolutely deserves at least a nomination as well and her comedic timing was perfection, but gah, Cynthia's just unreal.
I love this video. I will say as far as a musical adaptation, it is pretty good. In context of book, it’s absolutely atrocious. There’s not much coverage of book vs musical and movie; there’s a massive difference between the book fans and the musical fans and I think the book fans are taking a massive L on this. Wonderful video, will be subscribing to see more from you.
Gurl, how heavily medicated are you? lol Because I want the same meds. Kidding, I wasn't going to watch Wicked because of all the mess surrounding the movie. But now that you gave it such a positive review, I am open to watching it. 😆
Eric, I missed you baby!!! i know you love The Substance SO much, but I need you TO PLEASE watch "Babygirl" with Nicole Kidman (comes out the 25th) and please give a non biased review on that. If you're willing to, despite the subject matter LOL 😇
i appreciate you explaining the whole emotional tour bit. I'm really not trying to hate, but I don't generally relate to heightened emotions and having it explained actually helped. So, sorry for being a bit of a berk
All good 🤗 I don’t think everyone needs to understand them or relate to them (it also comes from that musical theatre nerd background that not everyone has, which is quite intense). It’s more the people who are genuinely writing think pieces on how they “actually hate each other” or dragging them for being such “cry babies”. Poking fun is cool and genuinely funny when it’s lighthearted, but some people have taken the tour as an opportunity to put out gratuitous hate for no reason, and that just screams insecurity to me
About the Oscars. I do not think anyone person nor the movie will get a best pic Oscar. I say that because this is based on one whole Musical and they split it into two leaving it very unfinished and the performances because of this didn’t feel developed. If they made it a one part movie I would feel differently.
Time will tell, though I think you might be wrong on that. The Oscar buzz for this has been through the roof. Let’s reconvene when they announce the noms 🫣
Who cares about the politics? I would say the entire cast and the director and Maguire the original author, whom you apparently have not read. Buckle up for the second act cupcake, because politics will be even more major.
I find these two so sweet and vulnerable-it’s truly baffling why so many people think there’s something “wrong” with them. Both women are beautiful, immensely talented, and clearly poured their hearts into this project. I wonder how many of the critics have ever spent a significant amount of time embodying a character, taking on that energy, and navigating the emotional weight that comes with it. It’s no small feat. This was clearly a passion project for both of them, and I deeply respect their dedication and the way they connected to their work. The criticism Cynthia has faced is outrageous, though sadly not surprising. Despite that, I’m here to celebrate these two women boldly stepping into their greatness. They deserve every bit of recognition for the artistry and vulnerability they’ve brought to this project.
You’re wrong about Mockingjay being split in two movies being bad. That book NEEDED to be split in two. There was just so much shit happening for it to be just one movie. If they had done only one movie, it would’ve been so rushed that it would’ve been a huge let down. I know this doesn’t seem to be a popular opinion. But as a HUG fan of the books, I can guarantee you the choice to split the book in two was the right one.
Greetings, great video. I'm a 54 year old gay man who despises musicals. I hate them with a passion. But I will listen to movie reviews for movies i will never watch. Love your work. The pooches are adorable.❤❤❤

The trailers were misleading in the best way about the colors. I thought wicked was going to be drab of all things and I don't think it was.
