  • We are starting weekly online karate classes from the 3rd of August: email dojo@grkc1978.com to get added to the sign-up list. We dig into Seipai and find some great oyo bunkai, including throws. (Don't let anyone tell you karate is only about striking.)
Also, hooray! Today marks a year of uploads - thank you for sticking with us, and we hope to keep on making content for you to enjoy.
Our content is free, but not cheap. Please consider subscribing for new videos every Friday, 2pm CAT.
00:00 - Opening move of Seipai kata
01:28 - second section of the kata
02:27 - why Queensbury rules have no place in karate: a brief discussion of fighting
04:31 - third section - arm break up to downward double punch
    06:51 - cross-step with double block/punch
08:48 - hike-uke until last move of the kata
11:55 - summary of bunkai concepts

Nice video with some very strong bunkai indeed.
1:27 I am quite sure Chojun Miyagi did something similar in an old photo with Eichi Miyazato.
6:48 double technique - yes, you're absolutely right, it's best seen as set-up for a throw - first set is right hand over head block/strike and left hand middle block/strike - then as we step into the twist to do the second set, we drop our right hand down to our side - my late sensei used to say this dropping has been much ignored, but decades ago that dropping down of the right arm could sometimes be interpreted as a "break the guard" bunkai - so the opponent intercepts your arms in the first set of double technique, you pull your left arm away with force (swinging it behind your torso) while your right arm crashes down on his guard to break it, then you step in, twisting to set up for a throw: the left arm goes up in the second set, to grab head/hair etc, the right arm either strikes/blocks or grasps the front of his gi, your body is twisted, but it is also set up for a throw, then the turn generates the dynamics for a throw. In practicing this bunkai, I found that that a certain amount of ramming into the opponent obliquely to unbalance him, helps with the subsequent throw - and if you've got both your hands on his head/ears/nose/hair, he'll go which ever way you lead :D.
Also the first set of double techniques has also been interpreted as the right-arm going behind the opponent's neck to grab his collar/lapel from behind to drag him down - but that's no longer oyo-bunkai.
Once again, you've done a lovely video of Seipai bunkai. Keep it up!

Going to go have a look for that photo - hopefully I can dig it up! Always nice to replicate history.
I'm not sure why the throws in the kata are so willfully forgotten by so many - my pet theory is that karate practitioners are generally terrible at ukemi-waza, and don't like being thrown. My background in Aikido and Judo has always made me super comfy with flying through the air, and also in seeing the throws in the kata (it's the closest I come to seeing the 'karate matrix' XD)
We always learn so much from your comments - thank you for taking the time to watch, and time-stamp your comments to the video. We hope to keep making content worthy of these thoughtful and detailed comments!

Sensei, I love that you are maintaining the Okinawan influence, as well as bringing in some very pragmatic views and applications. I don't always agree with some of the "traditional" bunkai, but you are putting out some great content, and adding a lot of value to the Karate community. No wonder your channel has grown so fast. From a fellow instructor: Thank you! 🙇🏽‍♂️

So the reason this took more than a month to surface is because we thought the audio was too bad to use the video. But I liked the bunkai and thought it would be a shame to lose the footage.
Next week, something quite different ;)

Great ideas, oyo bunkai are rarely seen online and I think it would be great for them to be shown more. Keep up the great work, hope to see more of these?

Great bunkai. There's more to karate than the percussive techniques, punching and kicking.

Pst! Don't tell anybody, but first move is to shoot somebody with a pistol and then next move is to reload and change its magazine. Then it makes sense. And is deadly. Very. :)
