    I know exactly when I am doing progress. Its when I fail and dont have to stop to start over and instead I keep up With the practice without stop. For instance if I practice a rudiment. In the beginning i have to do it slow and maybe even break it up in subdivisions and when i fail i have to start over. It is when i get up to speed and also can fail but get into the rudiment in the middle without stoping the tempo and rhythm.

    Best advise for improving: upload your own drum teaching videos on youtube. Once you’ve opened our own channel you are urged to constantly feed the masses of other drummers with things they already know (or don’t know, or know but want tho hear it again from somebody new). The benefits: You as producer have to work harder to get proper material, and you drumming will boost, because of all of the practice routine.

    I have recently started practicing to a click with a gap in it. 4 bars on 4 bars off and I will tell you what, it really tests your ability to "lock in". Playing to a metronome is great and all but it is easy to stay on it when it's always there like a crutch. It's definitely helped advance my timing for sure.

    • @THECAPTAINCAKEZ
      @THECAPTAINCAKEZ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mount ain You should check out Questlove doing that! He’s insane. Also another great metronome timing tip I’m practicing lately is to feel the pulse of the metronome away from the downbeat. Eg: every time it beeps, feel it on the 2nd 16th note of the beat

    I was just thinking the other day about your videos and the link to real life playing and then you make the video. Is there room for you to do a video going into it a bit deeper about this link. I am a hobby drummer so play zero gigs and only play when everyone has gone out the house or my six year old boy wants to get the saxophone out, but as someone who just prefers to play rarther that practice there could be other ways for me to improve or learn. You are always on top of it Nate well done and i still love it when a new instalment of the Nate show comes out. Sorry if this message is not very clear.

    I like your videos. Somethings you say, however, are just Not accurate. You seem to be a big Tony williams fan. He used to practice his ass off for five hours a day sometimes. And yet here you seem to fault people for practicing 2 to 3 hours per day and then suggest that one hour is better. That's crazy. The greatest players in the world, John Coltrane, Monk, And so many others played constantly throughout their development. You do a lot of developing drummers a disservice by telling them only to practice for one hour per day. I catch your point that maybe the first hour should be the most important stuff or the most challenging, but make no mistake, you are not going to inspire any world class Drummers by telling them it's OK only to practice for one hour. Anyway, you have great concepts and I enjoy your videos.
