Yeah, I discovered him like 16 months ago and I was blown away by his level in under 2 years. If he really reached that incredible level in under 2 years, he definitely has an EXCEPTIONAL memory because 90% of people would not reach that level so quickly doing exactly what he did.
I guess since he’s studying to be a medical student he probably does have a good memory. Medical students need to memorise an insane amount of facts haha.
@Evildea yes, because I used to follow some of those AJATT, Mass Immersion, Japanese students and they would also be doing like 6 plus hours a day and tons of ANKI and it takes most of them like 3.5 years to reach this guy's Chinese level (both languages have about equal difficulty level). I know the methods are not identical since this guy was also doing speaking practice early on, but still, this guy must have a near photographic memory because he had off the charts level in 16 months, living in England?!?!
So glad that I stumbled upon this channel I have been binging all of the videos for a while now but I still have one question about how you use Anki and the grinding process . Do you ever get to a high enough level to go completely monolingual ? For instance for you audio cards would you just write a description on the back in your target language or do you feel it’s better for memory sake to use translations for everything. I’m at a high enough level that I can watch movies and translate things to my native tongue in a way that would fit the scene better than the onscreen translation( or so I think lol ) at least in a way that makes it stick for me but I feel like I’m at a high enough level I SHOULDN’t be using my native language at all . But also experience problems when creating monolingual cards to where the whole card seems to become abstract sometimes making it where I “know the card “ but struggle with recall , what you say is the best way? Also with grinding would you ever do monolingual ? Thanks for any help 😊
The sooner you can get away from your native language the better. If you need to go through a phase of mixed use where some are in your native language and some are in your target language that’s fine. Anki is just a tool to get you to your end goal. Eventually when you’re high enough and fluent enough you’ll scrap Anki anyways. Hope that helps :)

Why torture yourself like that and hinder the process of learning when you can facilitate it by combining it with other methods which will skyrocket your studies.
I think a lot of people in all aspects of life gravitate towards “at effect” thinking. Basically, if X is good then more X is better and if more X is better then just doing X must be the best.

I can sit down and program (badly) for 10 hours straight (eating at my keyboard and taking small breaks to whizz). But somehow I struggle to study a language I need to learn for more than 20 minutes. I'm loving my Anki practice though. It's becoming slowly more and more addictive.

hey Spanish sounds cool to learn, I'm Peruvian so I'm a native Spanish speaker, you already knowing esperanto already puts you in a huge advantage, you have basically already have good start on vocab and you basically have master pronunciation to a 99% lol, you would also recreate the experiment of those two groups of people of one learning French for 2 years and the other esperanto for 1 year and French in the other, I also hope you make more esperanto videos in the future, I know a bit of Esperanto and I don't plan learning it fluently but I like watching your filmetojn

How do you know so much about language learning methodologies and hypotheses? Also, I got a fckn exam in 2weeks about language acquisition so I was kinda wondering if u can make a vid about them?
Haha I know so much as I’ve learned languages, I worked as a tutor for multiple years full time, been a professional actor and I’ve worked as a programmer with language learning companies. :P I’ll add your idea to the list.
I'm 2 weeks into studying Mandarin and this will probably save me so much time so thank you. I'm going to try this out. Not for 50 min a day though, but 20 min is doable for me.
"You need to practise creating sentences" -- THIS. Though, it is easier said than done. You'll only ever be able to confidently and constructively do that from a somewhat early stage if you have someone you can ask for help/correction/opinions etc. and be comfortable while doing so; someone where it doesn't kill your motivation even if they're basically saying "yeah - that's all wrong" - be that because you feel that comfortable around them or because the way they tell you is so gentle/otherwise attuned to you it doesn't register as something that would inhibit your creating sentences (however wrong or right they may be) in the future. Personally, I don't have that. Mostly because I don't like talking to strangers and frankly don't have the money to pay for someone (and find someone I get along with first and foremost). I found my own way of doing it; which is by no means the most efficient or fastest way - or even one suitablle for anyone else. - But that's the point: At the end of the day it's important what works for you and while advice can help you find what works for you, it doesn't mean the most efficient way is gonna work for you - or that the first or "best" piece of advice is gonna work for you.
@@Evildea Nothing special or novel; mostly just accounting for my inability to do dedicated studying for prolonged periods of time and my being terrified of making mistakes (that lead to being unintelligible); I can sprint a few hours a day for a week or two but I can't do the "one hour a day for a year" kind of thing; so I make the best of the sprints and just focus on input in between to retain what I've acquired and passively build "a feeling for the language". It's definitely not a way to practise speaking or to acquire a language quickly - but for listening, reading and from a certain point on writing, it works just fine and I'm not in a rush. Then I’ll give an English hint for what that Cloze is covering. Then on the back will be the full English sentence plus an audio in the language so I can confirm my pronunciation. Basically different decks for different things to improve. But 90% of my cards are Chinese to English listening decks.
What you call swapping out we called substitution drills; giving a basic sentence and then a word and the student would substitute it making necessary changes: "John goes to the school." store, "John goes to the store." yesterday, "John went to the store yesterday."
@@EvildeaBTW, I don't know how far back it goes exactly, but the Foreign Service Institute in America (which trains diplomats in languages as fast as possible) has materials using substitution drills dating to the 1960s. I was looking at scans of them and captures of old audiotapes when I was studying Cantonese. If you're ever curious about a bit older methods, the PDFs are freely available. Warning though, the old FSI stuff is generally effective but often dreadfully boring.
This is just studying grammar. Applied grammar. This is pretty standard stuff TBH. I do agree with trying to understand a language grammar. This approach is very anti CI however. People often conflate input (necessary) with CI(unnecessary and often counterproductive). Also to my knowledge, is not Chinese grammar rather simple? The tones are what makes it challenging to speak so the methods that work for Chinese are likely very different to Spanish.
A simple example is the particles. They can be used in so many different ways and if you slightly misuse them it will completely change the meaning of the sentence.
Pausing in the middle of the video to say when you do your hardcore "CI-flavored" experiment I would suggest maybe NOT using Spanish simply because you already have the background in Latin and Esperanto. If you want the most unadulterated version of that approach, it's worth considering some other language that's more distant but for which a ton of content is still available. Just a thought. Now, back to the video and a nice cup of 铁观音, then back to the grind (as I have 2 days off for the holiday).
I thought about that as well and looked into it a bit. The only other options I found that were flushed out well seem to be Japanese and Thai. I feel like Japanese could be cool but also shares to much with Chinese so that just leaves Thai. I need to think on it some more though.
@@Evildea Korean might be an option, as it's become a popular language over the last several years with tons of available content. But personally I don't think I would have the patience to attempt the experiment at all because even its more reputable evangelists say it takes absolutely forever to work. One could get pretty good at a couple more languages using sentence mining and such before everything came together using (for example) an AJATT/refold approach.
Yeah, I get that, but I keep getting comments like “You haven’t done enough CI so why you keep saying blah blah” because apparently the 390 hours I did with Chinese wasn’t enough so the only way to nip that in the bud is to learn a language using it completely.

It’s a common belief Chinese grammar is easy but it’s actually very complex once you get past the beginner stuff in a lot of ways.
