Hello. I have QX56 with exactly the opposite issue. Tank is listed at 26g, when gauge needle is hovering right about the beginning of the red mark, Status still shows just over 90 miles range, I can fill only about 14-15g of fuel. After 4-5 clicks on dispenser handle. So tank is as full, as possible. Sending unit on pump or gauge itself? Thing is, at roughly 15mpg, Status does show approximately correct range for a full tank - 397miles/15mpg=26 gal! Thus, system knows the correct fuel level in the tank. Yet, gauge, right after refuel to full, shows past the F mark but, in matter of maybe 2 miles driven, drops down to just below F and, accordingly, after about 200 plus miles driven, drops to the red mark, while Status still shows range of 100 or so miles. It's no big deal for me to tank once a week, keeps me busy Sunday morning but, if system shows correct range for the fuel amount in tank but gauge needle drops down faster, than it should - is it gauge or sending unit? Far I know, there's only one sending unit on 2011 QX56, mounted on the pump?
so after changing my fuel pump some time ago, my gauge never goes past halfway. I'm wondering if I should try cleaning the sending unit as you jus did, or just replace it. Your thoughts? Is the sole purpose of the sending unit is to accurately display fuel level?
The sending unit is responsible for showing the correct fuel level you see on the instrument cluster. Try cleaning the sensors on the sending unit to see if it helps. It’s a quick and free fix if it works. If it doesn’t work, replace it.
Hey buddy 2 gallon of gas is not equal to quarter of a tank unless your tank holds 8 gallon of gas .and for the record cleaning the gas gage never work. Just replace it and call it a day

Did this trigger a "Service engine soon" or any codes? Also did this permanently fix your issue?
It did not trigger a CEL. This fixed the issue permanently. Very easy to do.
