Im in After Effects 2021 and it seems they've removed the animation preset. Luckily after messing around, i got the same result. Open transform in the effects control for fractal noise and untick "Uniform Scaling" and scale height to 4500 (or around that number, whatever your liking is". Everything else is the same, you can copy from the video
Those who have CS6. Don't start with the brighter colours on top like he did. Put the bright colours down there because the snowflake effect can't go to negatives anymore. Once you apply the snowflake effect, just rotate the layer (look at the "Info" window to make sure that you made a neat 180 deg rotation.) Secondly, the effect controls for fractal noise is a single effect now! Meaning that you have to search for curtain to get what you need.(see other comments for mac) Hope it helped. great tutorial mate
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It really helped me in a school project. A tip for those using After Effects CS6, if you can't find the snow-effect mentioned in the tutorial(I couldn't find it. Only "snowfall"), you can apply CC Bubbles, change the shading type to "fade outwards", and take the size down, and play with the speed and wobble. It looks almost the same as snow. This effect goes upwards on its own, and therefore works great as an alternative to snow.
Oddly enough, on CS6, some of the animation presets became their own "effects," in the sense that they can now be found in the effect list as opposed to attached to each individual effect. Neat!
@sanyika96 If you mean that you can't see the effects presets in CS5, you need to enable them (see the comments below or my latest video After Effects Quick Tip - Missing Animation Presets). But if you're not seeing any of the CC effects, then you're probably using the demo version, or an illegal copy. In which case, I can't help you.
@JtzMe If you don't have the presets that are part of a standard installation of After Effects then you must either have the demo version or an illegal copy. Either way, I can't help you. Sorry.
For those who have CS6: CC Snow is replaced with CC Snowfall and will not allow a negative number. You can achieve a very similar effect with "CC Particle Systems II". However, you must put the 4 color gradient on a different solid layer and place it behind the layer with "CC Particle System II". You will also need to adjust the settings of the particle system to match the snowfall above. The default looks like fireworks but keep tweeking it and it will match exactly as above.
With CS6 and up use CC Bubbles. In "Shading Type" change it to "Fade Outwards" to achieve the fuzzy bubble effect. Play with frequency and size until you have it to where you like it.
Keyframes are just points where the value of a property is stored. Creating keyframes at specific points is the mainstay of creating animated effects in AE. To enable keyframes, click on the tiny stopwatch button next to the value you're changing. Now, when you make a change to that value, it will be stored at that point on the timeline. Hope that makes sense. The important thing to remember is to click on the stopwatch first - if you miss that step, keyframes won't be created.
Thanks for this....I was able to make add some really cool subtle particle and movement effects to a grunge background, along with some light ray effects. This really helped me get a more professional-quality look even upon my first time using AE, so thank you!
All current versions on After Effects can have plug-ins installed, but not all plug-ins are compatible with all versions of AE. The most important thing to be aware of is that plug-ins for the latest 64-bit versions of AE will not work with earlier 32-bit versions of AE.
Thank you for this tutorial. I was trying to do light rays exactly the way you are doing them, except above ground and coming from clouds, but couldn't find a tutorial on the 'net until now (and most of them just point you towards 3rd party plug-ins that are more photo-realistic/3-D, etc.).
Hi, Lawrence. Thanks for this clear tut. This is going to help me sort out an effect I have been trying to get for about a week! Elegant or eloquent and no BS. Thanks.
Great tutorials, man. I'm learning a lot! I'm using CS6 and my CC Snowfall will not let me enter a negative (-) attribute in Speed. Which means I cannot reverse the snowfall direction. Any ideas?
I am wondering the same. You could set the Flakes to 30, and the size to 15, but I can't set the speed to negative, so I can't make them go up. Have you found a way to do it yet?
If you're missing the Cycore effects (the ones with 'CC' in front) then it's because you have the demo version of After Effects or an illegal download. The solution is to buy a licensed copy. If you can't find animation presets, watch this video - /watch?v=fTrW3t-SHIY
there's a big problem when using recent versions of AE; the CC Snow doesn't exist anymore and snowfall parameters are quite different from those used here. Could it be possible to have an updated version of this tutorial?
The Cycore effects (CC) are installed as standard with After Effects, so you may be using the demo version, or an illegal copy. In which case, you'll need to get a licensed copy.
so cool! Thanks! in the new AE 2021, I can't go. to a negative speed, so the bubbles go from top to bottom, u have any suggestions on how to fix it? THANKS YOU SO MUCH
Just discovered your great tutorials. I'm just a AE beginner and I wonder if the current AE version (CC) prohibits me from using negative numbers for speed of the snow effect?!
Keyframes are only visible alongside the properties in the composition timeline - they won't show up when you create them in the effect controls panel. Just twirl down the effects properties of the layer you're working on in the composition panel and you'll find them - alternatively a really useful shortcut is to select the layer and hit 'u' This will show any keyframes for that layer.
I appreciate that zooming in isn't to everyone's taste, but it does allow the important details to be viewed at lower resolutions for low-bandwidth or mobile devices. Frankly, it would be a lot easier for me to produce these without the zoom, but I get a fairly large number of people saying that they like being able to see the details easily, so I'm not likely to change this style any time soon. Sorry.
Thanks for the tutorial but I couldn't download the project file off your website. Finally I placed an order and after a few pages I just got to the message that said the order was received. No download link was sent to the email either. how do we get to download the project file?
I have a question, I applied the Fractal Noise effect but I do not have the animation presets, I have the rest of the menu after Basic on the left panel, but no animation presets, where do I find them if they do not show there? Thanks.
Probably because you're using the demo version, or an illegal torrent. If your copy is kosher, then run the installation again - the Cycore effects are a standard part of AE these days.
If you don't see the Animation Preset Option when you add the "Fractal Noise Effect" for MACs, try using your Adobe Bridge Plug in, and use the "WAVE WARP" effect, its almost the same as the 'Curtain' Preset.. I didn't see the "Animation Presets that I saw on this Tutorial on mine" :] try that..it might work...great tutorial..
Thanks for the tutorial! Are there any similar effects to imitate the light rays? Adobe seems to have removed 'Curtains' from fractal noise. I've tried CC Light Rays, but apparently they make 'radial light' instead of actual separated rays.
hi short form videos i dont 9 who r u but really u r sooooo good and ur lectures much interesting please dont remove these lecture i want to see all of these
@JtzMe @shortformvideos If you click on the panel drop down, you will see an option for "show animation preset" cs5 is set as default to not show. I had the same problem.
Thanks for the tutorial - very helpful! But I still don't understand why people don't just tick off the "Inverted" box to invert a mask, as opposed to surfing through the dropdown box to find and select subtract (i.e. at 11:57, you can see the box to the right of the highlighted "Mask" text). I feel this saves time, even if only a second or two. Anyway, thanks again for this - might be using it in a project I'm planning for the summer!

Thanx for this info! Saved me lot's of time of searching Adobe's forums.. :D
Thanks!
Or you could just apply Time-Reverse Layer to it which will make it go backwards. Layer > Time > Time-Reverse Layer
Raven thank you so much!!
Thank you!!!
hey for some reason i don't have the curtain fractal noise , what can i do? please help!!!

CC Bubbles doesn't blend though. Not even if you change the blending mode of the layer it's on.
@@thelazywanderer_jt this was 8 years ago though, things might have changed since 😛 btw it’s my comment.
This is just what I need for my credit video project! thank you so muchhhh
So glad you don't use plugins- that always gets me every time I look up an interesting effect tutorial.
Oh man! That's still valid in 2021 except for the curtain thing (Max fractal/ linear/ transform and play with scale). Thank you!
You are extremely clear and precise with your descriptions! Thank you very much indeed (from a fellow Brit!)
Other than a few things already mentioned in the comments, this video holds up remarkably well for its age. Thanks so much for it.
It worked!!! I pressed U button and It finally worked, thank you so much man!!!!!!!
I know it's late but still.. thank you very much!! The tutorial is very good that you move the camera to where you are talking about!
Thank you. The "Smoke Rising" preset for the light rays comp looks great too.
Oddly enough, on CS6, some of the animation presets became their own "effects," in the sense that they can now be found in the effect list as opposed to attached to each individual effect. Neat!

In cs6 they've removed the CC snow, and replaced it with CC Snowfall. What are my options? Snowfall is nothing like Snow..
super cool!
Awesome!
I dont have curtain preset. Guess i cant use this technique in my animation, this tutorial is really good tho

@JtzMe There's a drop down menu just right of the tab of Effect Controls: Light Rays and you have the option to Show Animation Presets

hi, can you make rotating light rays tutorial(similar to this tutorial) and instead of bubbles show tiny particles coming from centre?

if you have CS6 the curtain effect is just called curtain search it on the effects and presets

I can't set the speed to a negative number, After Effects just switches it to a speed of 0 when I do.. anyone know a fix to this?
Years late, but for anyone who runs into this issue in the future, just flip your layer vertically!
Noted! Thanks so much :)
