    I wish I could travel in time to let Anton know that all his great symphonies are still being widely played, and moreover, in their original versions.

      it is sad to think that so many composers were not appreciated, to say the least, in their own lives. i think of tchaikovsky, whose works seemed so often to premier with bad reviews. but like many other of those composers i speak if, they have had the last laugh from beyond the grave.

    Incomparable.. that's the coda of the Bruckner 5 Finale. Pure joy and ecstacy magically reflected in music. Abbado takes the faster approach and, boy, does it work!

    This is soooo good!!! Abaddo and Vienna are fantastic. He knows how to end a phrase and let it breathe. He also knows how to move the tempo instead of letting it bog down into a quagmire like that other conductor who has become a "Cause Celeb"....LOL!!!

Grazie ancora!!!

    Definitely, the best recording among all Bruckner performances Abbado ever conducted! Also, I am really fond of the appearance of unique woodwind section at the coda of the 4th movement.

    In Christmas broadcast 1942, OKW dedicated this symphony for the soldiers in Stalingrad.

    I can understand why that's one of the reference recordings of the B5. Full blooded sound. No messing around with unnecessary tempi. And good understanding of the architecture. And, of course you've got the VPO. Titanic symphony. But Anton at his best. Thanks for the upload..

    From the standpoint of wholesome optimism, development, cohesion, symphonic unity, this is, by far, his best symphony! So much better than the undeservedly more popular 4 and 7.

      I think Bruckner, himself was impressed by what he created.

      and Abbado understood that this symphony needs energy, fast tempo, and not contemplation . A question of faith.

      An astute British music critic once wrote that the best Bruckner symphony always seems to be the one you have just heard.
      So, yes, the Fifth must be the best! 😊

  • @ilirllukaci5345
    @ilirllukaci5345 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think Abbado takes the Schubertian, as opposed to the Wagnerian, path to Bruckner, and then to Mahler.

    • @ilirllukaci5345
      @ilirllukaci5345 ปีที่แล้ว

      Biedermeier Bruckner? Or Bruckner wo die citron bluhn? Abbado was threading an aesthetic needle. Hence the "fussing".

    • @gezobel
      @gezobel 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The two Bruckner extremes in interpretation were Furtwangler and Celibidache. Most other conductors take a variable tempi somewhere in between. I can take Bruckner at any pace but the faster speed in the coda of the Fifth adds excitement to the grandeur and that is a quite explosive combination!

    • @ilirllukaci5345
      @ilirllukaci5345 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gezobel ultimately, the 2 extremes of Bruckner interpretation are the (ugh) subjective and the objective. The "Bruckner moment" verses the granitic slabs. Personally, from my teens onward, I sought the "opium" in Bruckner.

      Abbado lets the flutes come through the orchestra.

    • @ezekielthiessen7080
      @ezekielthiessen7080 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The melodic line in the flutes is significant, and because it's only in the flutes, the rest of the orchestra needs to be toned down a little for it to be heard.

    I can hear the strings in the finale which us an acid test for me, they should not be drowned out by brass. But brass still too loud and there is something not quite spiritual or balanced enough here.
