    To everyone that has been patiently waiting for this, here is the long overdue follow-up to the original SB Hour of Power - I hope it lives up to expectations. Lemme know what you think!

    My first ever experience with DOS was with a game called Math Rescue. DOS games are underrated and fun as hell.

    Awesome! finally people will recognize how great DOS music is and how close it can be in quality to Super Nintendo music.
    Thank You for making this! :D

      Np! :) But as much as I love SNES music, this soundcard in AWE mode in Dos can blow it away! If you look at my original Sound Blaster hour video (it's linked in the description), the last 10 minutes or so have recordings of it in wavetable mode. Tyrian, especially, can do all sorts of voodoo with it that the SNES could only dream of ;)

      I agree! hahaha I'll definitely checkout your previous work, can't believe I'd missed out on it the First time.

      don't get me wrong, but FM synthesis surpass the SNES (or any sample based) music by far!!

    28:51 That Kyrandia sample sounds... wrong. It's not the AdLib/OPL2 I recognise. AFAIK the game doesn't (directly) support OPL3. It sounds like MT-32 MIDI being played as General MIDI through a MIDI-to-FM converter. The MT-32 harp in this track sounds like a horn when played by a GM device.

    • @YarisTex
      @YarisTex 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Legend of Kyrandia uses real mode Audio Interface Library drivers by John Miles and the game includes OPL3 drivers, like the SBP2FM.ADV and the Pro Audio Spectrum 16 ADV driver which is OPL3 as well. However the data that is sent might be normal OPL2 data.
      But i agree with you, here it does not sound right.

    I've always wondered why MIDI songs sounded different depending on what system/hardware you used?

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +PeteSanctions It's because midi isn't music, it's merely an interface. Midi music files are just coded instructions on how to reproduce a song. The way it sounds depends on the sound card. The sound card (real or emulated) is the "instrument" that plays back those instructions, and they all sound different from one another. For example, the MT32 uses a totally different set of sounds to playback a file than a Gravis Ultrasound, even though they can both play the same song through midi.
      This music isn't midi though. In principle it's similar, but FM synthesis differs in some important ways. That being said, FM can still approximate the sounds needed to play midi reasonably well in many cases.

    • @soylentgreenb
      @soylentgreenb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Midi "asks" the sound card to provide a muted trumpet, or whatever instrument, and the sound card does the best it can to provide it. The sound samples used are known as sound fonts. Many sound cards allow you to change the sound font to whatever one you happen to have (there are even joke sound fonts that are to midi what wingdings is to fonts).

    The Tempest 2000 OST is pleasant, though it pales in comparison to the Jaguar version.

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Dos version used the exact same mod files as the Jaguar version did if you set up digital sound in the game's setup utility

    Never understood the lyrics of the music of GODS (39:35), nor if it is a digitized human pipe or a bagpipe or both.
