  • in 2014, Intel launched the First DDR4 Desktop Consumer CPU, and they definitely charged for it, at a whopping $1000 US, this CPU featured also 8 Cores 16 Threads, and the AVX2 instruction set. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D however, released in 2022 was the last dedicated DDR4 8 Core, though in 2014, Intel launched the First 8 Core 16 Thread DDR4 CPU, the i7-5960X, and all these years later, how do the two compare in games? Let's test at 1080p low, 1440p high and 4K ultra with the RTX 4090 to get the full picture.

      If you find an i7 5960X in batch "J" take it, frankly in OC they are much better it will have nothing to do with only 4.2 GHz.
      I would have lent you mine so much it's worth it and it's cool to test.

    This is why even I updated to AM4 when Ryzen 3000 came out, I never sold my 5820k X99 platform, it still delivers great performance to this day, nowdays I mostly use it as a PCIe device driver, and since Xeon's are insanely cheap now with 40 PCIe lanes, its a no brainer in that part too, Im just waiting for those crazy 22 core Xeons to go lower to later upgrade my X99 for encoding and video feed manager. X99's is truly Intel's best platform in the last decade.

The most important part for me is the pcie lanes and the features available on the motherboards. CPUs tend to last a lot longer than GPUs do. Hence why you can still be using a 5960x or similar, but like a 780ti would be struggling hard currently. Thats why investing in a beefy CPU when new upgrades come around is worth it.

      Edit: but yeah spending money on the high end GPUs is not worth it since each generations high end GPUs completely destroy the previous one. It makes such more sense to get a mid range GPU and just upgrade more often.

      Same. I have a Core-i7 6900k with a 1080ti and it’s a great combo. Runs all the games I’ve thrown at it perfectly fine.
      Keep in mind that the 6900k is a very poor value despite being a very powerful CPU. There are better options for the price to be honest. I tried overclocking it and it doesn’t do well. I could only get it to 4.00 GHz and I really didn’t see much change in performance and the heat that CPU gives off was insane. Liquid cooling is a must. With 140w TDP stock, it’s already a power hungry and hot CPU that needs a beefy cooler. I did have a BeQuiet cooler on it and it did well, but overclocking it proved a bit much for it. It would hover around 65 degrees C at max load. I ended up switching to a Cooler Master liquid cooler which really helped to bring the temps down. The amount of heat coming off the radiators is impressive. Not a power efficient CPU by any means, but extremely powerful for sure.

    1. Really wish more peeps would incorporate some turn time tests or 4x games. Factorio, Civ 6, Total Warhammer 3, Stellaris, etc.
    2. What is the best way to bench these against each other? It is fair that the 5800x3d can use faster ram, but doing so also kinda makes it not apples to apples and masks ipc increases. Maybe using the fastest possible ram for one test, and then clocking it down to whatever the classic cpu can do would be good? I understand if it is too much work tho.

    I would have liked to see lower cost 8 cores like you did with the six cores, 5700X or 5800X. The 5800X 3d is a bit special when it comes to CPUs so seeing the intel core against some of the others would have been interesting.

    • @johndoh5182
      @johndoh5182 ปีที่แล้ว

      Who cares though?
      You buy a 5800X3D to build a gaming system, and it sells better than any other Zen 3 8 core part, which means there's a sizable audience that knows what it's for and pay the extra $100 USD.
      The other issue is actually purchasing a system, not just a CPU. Most Intel MBs on the used market, when they're a high end board cost a lot of money. I can go to Micro Center and buy X570S and have USB3.2 gen2x2 and 3 NVMe drives all running PCIe gen4 for around $100 USD if I buy open box.
      If I want to build cheap I'm getting a 6 core part, where the 5500 can often be found in the US for around $85 USD. I'm not going to spend $200 for a CPU for an older platform. Maybe if the 5700X gets down to $160?

      The 5700x is still a great upgrade for someone on an older zen cpu on AM4. I dropped in a 5700x on my cheap B550 motherboard I bought in 2020, and my 1% lows and average fps went up. But if I were to build a pc from scratch nowadays, I would definitely hop on AM5 since its coming down in price and will have better longevity

    Yep! 🙂Like before, older HEDT CPUs are underrated and overlooked. The very same story had already happened with the older LGA1366 Intel 6c/12t Xeons X5600 and W3600 CPUs (I used and OC'ed them for years). These LGA2011-3 5900X CPUs (far better than the old Xeons) can too be very easily OC'ed over 4.3Ghz, and are then very competitive today. At a point where these (once expensive) CPUs and X99 motherboards are now priced at a fraction of the equivalent modern new stuff, they become ideal for a budget build. Yet no one talks about it. I wish more people understood it and more YTB channels focused on this. A practical case where affordable and slightly older is a smart choice, and it's widely available (EBAY and etc). 👍Nice video!

    A big part of why the 5960X can be had for such a reasonable price of ~$50 is because they have basically been swapped in the secondhand market for some of the monster core (18-22) Xeons that are available to the platform, with even some 12-14 core variants as low as $20. I'm sure there are plenty of longtime X99 owners who have moved on to such CPUs and now have their former primary rig working as a server. Kind of a rare situation, because the 5960X is still very much a flagship CPU for the platform in terms of everyday-computing/gaming due to the Broadwell "upgrades" (6900X/6950X) being something of a victim to Intel's early 14nm growing pains.
    At their original MSRPs, the 5820K was certainly a winner due to being a $400 part, with the 5960X being a $1000 part, but for ~$30 vs ~$50 these days, the extra cache (15MB vs 20MB), extra cores (6 vs 8), and extra PCI-e 3.0 lanes (28 vs 40), the +$20 is probably worth it for anyone looking to get into X99 (granted, for anyone bargain hunting, there's an excellent chance you will find an X99 board with a 5820K thrown in)

    This was Intel's last legendary lineup, the X99 and its processors. I had a few of the same mobo you showed here, the Asrock X99 Extreme for workstation, main system and server, rock solid, stable boards providing 40 pcie lanes and 8x ram slots with the best components for what I recall paid €300 euros a pop inc. VAT. I'm pretty sure they will STILL last a lot longer than most newer mobos, as they had top notch Nichicon capicators, vrms and other switches and power regulators.
    There is an interesting Xeon for this platform that is the last overclockable one, a 6c/16t from out of my head. I never had a single crash with 8x16gb ecc ram with years of continuous operation as a server, what a great platform that was. It's still worth to get it today for this insane low price if you're willing to wait for cheap >= 20c xeons to pop the market soon. Those mobo's will eventually sell out and skyrocket in price, as they did with previous platform's insane cheap xeon builds on the second hand market, so if you decide to go this route, get some of those boards in stock before it's too late.
    This video proves how important it is to pay for a proper mobo and cpu initially to get the most of your money (i.e. least amount of writeoffs/year as you can still use it today vs gpu's that get obsolete much faster, hence higher writeoffs, so for gpu's it makes more sense to buy best bang for buck mid(-high) end and upgrade sooner to keep writeoffs for gpus limited, as from decades of experience, they always had the highest.
    For builds today, I'd def recommended the 5800x3d, I bought this one too and is totally worth the money it's priced at, $300, good performance at incredible perf/W when you decide to give all core a -30 uv (lower power consumption AND more performance, as it will boost to max clock all the time) and couple it with a Scythe Ninja 5 + Arctic F12 fan (better performance than overpriced Noctua and quite a lot cheaper, hell, you even can use it as a passive heatsink whereas with the competition you cannot). For gpu's, I'm skipping this generation. If you really need a gpu, look for previous 6000 amd before they will sell out. I wouldn't pay more than $400 and that would be for the 6800 (xt) brand new or barely used on 2nd hand market, otherwise it's waiting for 3nm gpu's which will be most likely the better upgrade of the decade for gpu's. Yes, it's that long time ago where a good banger came on the market, like the 1060 6gb which I paid €200 inc. VAT a pop. Current gen 4000 and 7000 series are the worst I ever saw for over 20 years in the dgpu market, do not buy it, Nvidia is at least 50% too expensive (only interesting ones are 4090 and 4070,

    I'm still rocking an Asus x99 R5E10 along with an i7-6950X @ 4.2 GHz, 128 GB DDR4, and x2 GTX 1080 Ti's in SLI since 2016. I kinda wish I would've made my big overkill purchase a couple months later when x299 was released due to many things such as the limiting DMI 2.0 on x99 versus DMI 3.0 on x299. I've been tinkering with modifying and flashing my own custom UEFI to access "hidden" features to extend the life of this machine.
    I am long overdue for an upgrade and general overhaul of my system, but I'm not currently in a financial position to do so. Whatever platform I go with, it has to have at least 40 PCIe 5.0 lanes.
    I thought about obtaining the Asus Pro WS W790E-Sage SE, but I have the feeling that I should wait for Intel's Emerald Rapids before upgrading. I decided to go overkill with a workstation build instead of HEDT. I also hope Nvidia comes out with a Displayport 2.1 GPU in their next generation.

    For me, the improvement was even more substantial - I went from Core i7 3970X to Ryzen 7 5800X (without x3d, it was very close to the launch date of 5000 series, within a couple months), and in some titles, like Crysis Remastered, the difference was actually tangible - there were no longer occasional framerate dips down to the mid-30FPS. A few other recent (at the time) demading games also got huge improvements in their 1% / 0.1% lows. It was noticeable even though I am an "ultra/60fps" guy, which relies heavily on GPU, rather than "moderate/high-refresh" where CPU would matter more.

    Mainboard choice matters a lot for X99. There were some MBs (IIRC Asus and MSI - they were advertised with an "OC Socket") that bumped an otherwise static auxiliary voltage. This in turn allows for pushing the L3 cache/ringbus clocks significantly above the 3.5~3.7 Ghz that would otherwise be the limit, which especially benefits gaming performance.

I only game in VR where you try to get to match the headset frequency and that's it and then you are just looking at the % load on the GPU and CPU trying to keep a little head room there for spikes during the game. I'm using a Pimax 8KX and not a single game apart from msfs taxed my 5960x - even with my 4090!! It, and all the other high end but older cpus are an absolute steel if you either game in VR (but don't play msfs) and/or you are OK with flat screen fps below 120!!!

    I got the 5960x with a MSI X99S SLI Plus, paired with 32gb of ram in quad channel and nvme. The system is fast, but the cpu becomes very hot when overclocked beyond 4.2 GHz. From 4.3 you need an AIO to keep it under control and even like that during summer is better to keep it stock and undervolted, because it can raise the room's temperature pretty quick. And you need to overclock it, because to get close to the single core performance of the Ryzen 3000 series (Zen 2), the chip has to run @4.5. Like that it scores 500 and 5000 points in cpuz single core and multithreaded benchmark. At stock frequencies it's like having a cheap 8 cores Xeon E5 v3.
    So beware, because depending on where you live the cpu can transform your room in an oven during summer days. My suggestion is to undervolt and overclock it. But, even like that, it stays too hot at high frequencies.
    Better to sell the X99 system, if you don't use it stricly as a workstation, and build an AM4 system buying a used cpu. That's what I'm doing: I just bought a used Ryzen 5600X and a new MSI B550-A Pro for 240€ total and probably I will get most of this money back selling my old mobo and cpu. Later I will update to a Ryzen 7/9, when I'll find a good price. Even a 5950X would be cooler than the old core i7 Extreme chips. 😄

    • @lucid8898
      @lucid8898 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are right. This I7 exteme beast gets hot in the summer where I live. I'm interested to see how the AM4 platform works out for you.

    • @gianlucap1935
      @gianlucap1935 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@lucid8898 In the end I swapped the MSI board for an Asus TUF B550 Gaming Plus. At the moment I'm using an old Arctic Freezer 7 Pro (single 92mm fan) to cool the cpu, because the other ones that I have can't mount in the AM4 socket. Even like that is waaaay cooler than the 5960X. It's like night and day. I live in Sardinia and the day that I left the comment it was like a furnace. The room was unberable, even with the cpu at stock and simply watching a movie. Also, the liquid cooling is worse when it comes to move the heat out from the case. As for the performance, the Ryzen is faster in everything, I'm very happy with it.
      For reference, at stock speeds and voltages, with the AMD Wraith cooler it scored 10827 in Cinebench R23, consuming about 77-78W according to Hmonitor and reaching 73-74°C. Bear in mind, in Sardinia is still hot these days. The 5960X, instead, liquid cooled with a Corsair H100i and overclocked to 4.5 GHz @1.255V (with active voltage), scored 10245, passing its TDP. Can't remember the temperature. But on air and with the same settings it jumped immidiately to >80°C.
      My case was an oven with the i7 Extreme, now I can't feel the hot air coming out. Liquid cooling isn't needed: a cheap Cooler Master or Arctic Cooling with a double fan is ok.
      Before the i7 I had an AMD FX 8320E overclocked to 4.5 GHz on air for daily usage and was cooler than the intel. I validated 5 GHz on air with the FX, while the intel was melting @4.5 with the same air cooler.
      My advise, unless someone needs a 20/22 Xeon V4 for workstation tasks, buy a used Ryzen 5000 series (picking the model that you need) and use the gpu for rendering and video editing. For this task Nvidia is better than AMD: Cuda, the RT cores and Optix are supported by all the major programs when it comes to rendering and video editing.

    Hi, great vid, sub granted. Anyway, I happen to be an owner of an asus laptop with rather infamous i7 11370H with 4c/8t and 85w variant of RTX 3060. I was fully aware of its cons and limitations at purchase, but given the price of around 920GBP at gloomy times of scalper pandemic in oct 2021, it wasn't too much of a bad deal. Since I own the machine I played tens and tens of games, and ones that gave me a headache were A Plague Tale: Requiem and Warhammer 40k Darktide. I must admit that usually I'm going for 60Hz vsync for image consistency and high rather than ultra settings. Requiem I locked fps at 40 and Warhammer I had to leave it unlock since vsync wasn't working properly and was causing massive fps drops (UE4 you bastard ;-P). I played Metro Exodus EE on ultra with ultra rt and only on few instances fps dropped to around low 50s.. PC runs like a dream and honestly I don't feel like I'm missing out a lot compared to 6 or 8 cores. I realize this laptop days are counted, especially with new breed of UE5 games on the horizon. All in all I'm very happy with this laptop and gonna keep it until nvidias rtx 5 series. Even over year and a half from purchase I'm sticking with high gfx presets on every single game. Intels single core performance plays a great deal I suppose and thanks to adequate cooling solution in the laptop, temps are averaging low 80s even in many hours sessions of gameplay in the perf mode as I'm avoiding turbo for longevity sakes of hardware. Keep up the good work, I'm looking fwd to your next vid. Greetings from the UK.

Memory speeds are definitely finicky on haswell-e, but I've been able to get 3000 c14 working on my GFs 1660v3, the better latency and bandwidth might've been a huge help alone against a chip like the 5800x3d. You can really see that performance has not really been going up by as much as it used to in the past, for a while when comparing these 2 CPUs from 2014 2022 one would expect the Ryzen and even current Intel and AMD offerings to be much higher performance than they are in real life computing and even gaming loads. With all of the security mitigations that have been put in place on past and new chips through updates to the microcode the real world performance seems much lower than one would expect with a 10-15% boost in performance year over year with each new chip release.

The whole thing just cost me a lot of money and I have problems that I didn't have before (stuttering on the desktop and also in some games). Considering that there are 8 years between the CPUs, I am very disappointed.
    I would have preferred to stay on X99 for another 1-2 years and then get a bigger performance boost.

    Fun fact. X99 more capable in RAM OC then u will se on this video. Friend of mine have around 85gbps on his 6800k. U can calculate ram frequency by urself :)
    Im glad to have this amazing platform today.

    Great CPU. My Asus Rampage V Extreme killed my 5960X which made me upgrade before DDR5 platforms became a thing sadly :/.

    crazy how this cpu has this much headroom for overclock, was it usual that the cpus these days came in with so much to squeeze out??

    The bright green flashes when switching between scenes made me look away and skip ahead. Just my input -.-'
