    This episode was a work of genius. The fans all thought they were abandoning the B-plot formula and they advertised it like another filler episode, only to not show a single scene of their adventure and focus ENTIRELY on plot development. After the genius April Fools S3E1 airing and the hype of the Worldender, this is the BEST season so far. I love it when Dan and Justin just fuck with everyone.

      I totally agree. The show has balls that South Park used to have. It masks social commentary and philosophical questions so awesomely that everyone knows what it is about without the show spelling it out. Sure it can cause misinterpretations, but that could be seen as richness of the art of storytelling as people are forced to think more.

      crimsonnin2 Even the name of the episode is all about what we didn't see at all. It would be like calling the previews episode The Morty of Rickstreet.

      Ounouh Did you miss Seasons 19 and 20? Those are the most relevant and bold mockery of modern culture I've ever seen. South Park is great in it's own right. There really is no comparison between the shows. Now, if you want to debate Futurama vs Rick and Morty, that is at least a similar genre of cartoon.

    • @emirinobambino
      @emirinobambino 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I disagree, I think South Park has just as much balls as they ever did, but simply project it more subtly.

    Simple Rick's life is horrifying. If he is indeed a Rick who never left his Beth, it's possible he's not in the Citadel out of his own choice. Maybe he was abducted. It's possible even when Rick chooses to stay with Beth, he's fated to always leave her.

      I still think it represents nihilism. I mean, it doesn't show a critique or anything of living a 'real' happy life vs. a 'manufactured' happy life. Also, it's Wisecrack's MO because it's Rick and Morty's MO. You should look out for those times that Justin Roiland talks about his philosophy, it's all existential nihilism.

    • @johnsmith-re1vj
      @johnsmith-re1vj 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Hey Kyle (I don't know how to tag i'm an old lady) if you watch other wisecrack videos (philosophy of...incredible s,philosophy of....or those alien review ones) they are literally all about how great nihilism is if you can find one video that shows a different philosophy in a positivie way (stoics or romanticism or whatever) please link it but honestly I have never seen them do anything else but jack niezche off. I am not a philosopher so I can't comment on nihilism. I read beyond good and evil and it seemed to be just bagging out other philosophy's and out dated (the stuff he says about science for instance). But I am sure it's evolved from there. It certainly criticises rick's "the world is meaningless there is no good and evil" attitude and jerry is definitely what niezche hated about the modern man morty criticises both and seems to be the creators mouthpiece. Honestly nihilists seem to hate modern life but they never other an alternative and don't want to escape the comforts of it either. The fact that they don't atleast admit that they are just as much a modern man as I am makes them hypocrites. Atleast other philosophies had a solution rather then just shitting on everything.

      I'm a little amazed at how much mileage they're managing to get out of this season of R&M. It's the same goddamn thing every episode: Be as crapsack as possible while shitting on even the slightest ray of hope or positivity. Frankly, it's getting more than a little repetitive. This is why people don't like die-hard nihilists in real life. THEY'RE BORING. Once someone has decided to only see the worst in everything, there's no point talking to them.
      At any rate, the show is rapidly just turning into I'm-14-and-this-is-deep fodder.

    • @alveolate
      @alveolate 7 ปีที่แล้ว +80

      die-hard nihilists are fine with being boring. why would someone who thinks the world is pointless give two shits about being interesting to the meatsacks they're forced to interact with?
      btw, the show hasn't even gone an inch deep into nihilism. it's just nihilist tones underpinning the amazing grandeur of "world building". the real shit will hit the fan when the construction stops and deconstruction begins.

      The whole point is they're explaining how to escape that nihilistic negative mindset through Jerry and Morty as he matures. If you really want a show like that look at Bojack.
      Also, the podcast is free and Wisecrack deserves to get as much money as it can during the adpocalypse. They make quality content and put in a ton of effort.

    • @fallboy6123
      @fallboy6123 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Private Select How are you so sure it's about escaping these negative sides of nihilism you speak of? Generally curios, as I perceive the show to serve as an example of different lifestyles based on different philosopical doctrines. We have Rick who alternates heavily between nihilism and hedonism (one being caused by the other, and the other being caused by some tragic/groundbraking point in his life), and how this lifestyle has taken a toll on him, and then we have Morty, who tries to be balanced, taking a bit from both sides of Rick's mindset without indulging in neither one of those. I don't see where the show tries to "educate" us on the nihilistic lifestyle tho

      You should do their job then give them some more competition. It's not as if there aren't millions of videos breaking down R&M, WiseCrack just does it best. The podcast is free and the perfect length for a commute to work for me. I mean I'm here for the Simple Sparky Sweets but I do enjoy the quality of work that goes into WiseCracks quick take reviews of R&M because even though there's plenty of competition for quick turnaround episode breakdowns and WiseCrack does that well because I feel as if Jared and others at WiseCrack actually do some research on their breakdowns which isn't something most quick turnaround breakdowns do and I'm struggling to see how WiseCrack is hustling anyone by having a 10 minute video but if you want more for free there's a 45 minute podcast to nerd out on for free, there's no financial incentive for WiseCrack to make more free content but they do. That's the opposite of what The Simple Rick corporation would actually do, you get what you get and you better like. Come home to the taste of exceeded expectations Come home to Reality.

    That's not the only thing they captured. They say, right here, that it is simple Rick here, sitting in this chair.
    Which means they abducted, against his will in all probability, the only kind of Rick able to be happy and make Beth happy.
    To manufacture that fake happyness, thay had to destroy the real one. That poor Beth had a loving father, and now he's gone.

    I wonder if the "impossible flavour of your own completion" line is actually the show saying something specifically about Rick's psychology. Science is an endeavour that is effectively endless and therefore, from an individual perspective, sort of pointless by design. Rick's depression is likely based on the fact that his own exploration of science showed him truths about the multiverse that made it impossible for him to give his own life meaning. It's sort of a pandoras box situation where he has been granted god like power but at the cost of not it meaning anything to him. Becoming better at science, getting wrecked and going on reckless adventures are his coping mechanisms but they never get him what he really wants, which is the simply a sense of satisfaction. Enter Simple Rick's.

    • @koalafie9008
      @koalafie9008 7 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      William Billington I completely understand what you mean. But let me add on to that thought.
      Remember what the therapist said in Pickle Rick? Rick uses his intelligence to justify his actions throughout the entire series a.k.a. his sickness. Because of his godlike intelligence and the truth that nothing in his life can actually give him meaning or completion, he drinks and goes on ridiculous adventures. And that's where Simple Rick Wafers come in, they're a way of nullifying that sickness in all Ricks even for a brief moment and as we saw in the previous episode, "Rest and Ricklaxation," we see a very different man when that sickness is removed. He is still the same guy with Godlike intelligence but his actions are more mundane and moralized than that of the Rick we now. And Roiland and Harmon shows that in the willingness of Ricks to do menial jobs instead of what they're godlike intelligence actually causes them to do. Factory worker Rick says it best, " they told us we were special because we were Ricks." It gives the viewer a sense that these tamed and lackadaisical Ricks aren't the true versions of themselves.
      Don't know if it makes sense to people but it made sense in my head.

      Or shoot him with a rifle from a nearby rooftop? There are hunters who set up rifle traps along known paths of their prey that can be triggered remotely. Or hey, why not a drone nail bomb combo? People are creative creatures when they want something bad enough, and killing political figures in a country where they feel relatively safe should be pretty easy.

Dunno, probably need to watch it all over again. But it seems like something that could happen. I seem to remember that the Rick he was manipulating was one shade more evil that Rick C137.

      A world without a system? Huh.

    • @alveolate
      @alveolate 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      what makes you think self-awareness would lead to a system that promotes "the world we would like to see"? what makes you think the utopian vision is something everyone shares? clearly there are those who think a world with trump walls is utopian, while others think a world without possessions is utopian.
      the very system we currently see is already the aggregate of all the extreme-utopias people dream about.
      the reason we can't escape the system is because there is a huge imbalance of power, where those who control propaganda (i.e. media and culture) still control how the masses think - including what constitutes "self-awareness". these uber-powerful will continually demarcate the "safe" boundaries of thought within which people are allowed to be aware of.
      unless you are somehow in this top 1%, and amazingly charismatic enough to convince/influence all your powerful peers to fall in YOUR line, it won't be possible to "promote" any better system/world. but to do that, you would need to become the ultimate fascist, and force your will onto others - would that do for the foundation of a "better utopia"?

    • @empathylessons2267
      @empathylessons2267 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I meant those as two separate ideas.
      -Make self awareness profitable
      -Make the world we would like to see, profitable.
      That is the only way the system will create it.
      Obviously people would like to see different works, that why we need more discussion. That's why we need to exit our echo chambers and hear other perspectives.
      My perspective is that we will never fix the huge imbalances of power, the only thing we can do, is make our best interests their best interests. By making what is in our best interests profitable.
      We have the power to change what is profitable, we buy the products.
      We just need to exit our echo chambers and start talking to one another, this will start the self-awareness.
      From there we just need to start acting in ways, that provide companies an opportunity to profit off providing us genuine self awareness.

    • @insertusername7342
      @insertusername7342 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "The only thing we can do, is make our best interests their best interests. By making what is in our best interests profitable."
      That is called capitalism. That is the current way of things.
      However I get what you mean, but it sounds like an utopian and rather improbable world.
      Your idea would require (as you say) a mass awakening of self-awareness. It would require (that we become) a completely different psychological creature, than humans. It would require a complete change in how we are taught, who teaches us(their ideas and goals for the education), it would require MORE controll to make sure that a high enough percentage of people got "THE RIGHT IDEAS"!
      Humans are conformistic by nature. We follow the group, we follow what`s popular, we follow what`s safe, we follow the comercials. Your idea would require a fundamental change in this, one that would require mass brainwashing for starters...
      As I said, it would probably require humans to become something else, probably something less animalistic.

    • @empathylessons2267
      @empathylessons2267 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well capitalism just means that what is profitable survives.
      It doesn't mean that what is in our best interests is profitable.
      But you're right, what I speak of is improbable.
      It would require things getting bad enough for change to be demanded on a mass scale, it would require a unifying factor, an identifiable figure.
      But I disagree that it would require more control. Self awareness includes acceptance that there are no "RIGHT" ideas.
      Humans are conformist by nature, but the conformation swings along a pendulum.
      Whatever happens, is what was always going to happen. But hopefully the pendulum swinging into self awareness is what was always going to happen.
      Considering our current lack of self-awareness, I consider it a possibility.

    Can't they just automise everything with AI and robots? I mean the Citadel is filled with Ricks. Why didnt they think of that?

    • @HaloInverse
      @HaloInverse 7 ปีที่แล้ว +105

      I'm guessing that the pre-Rickpocalypse Citadel _was_ much more automated. But then everything broke, and they had to rebuild not just automation but basic infrastructure "by hand". Some Ricks had to do the mundane work, and others had to do the coordination, now that the Council was gone. The Ricks who were the organizers, being those who most aggressively stepped forth to do so among a sea of mostly-equally hyper-intelligent Ricks, realized that they could _keep_ their positions as a _de facto_ Council post-reconstruction if they could arrange the Citadel's society to maintain most of the Ricks and all of the Mortys as an underclass. So, automation was de-prioritized, and Ricks like Plumber Rick were "allowed to" keep their new jobs.
      To maintain the new power imbalance and keep the Ricks from rising against them, the New Council needed to _appear_ to not be ruling from on high like the Old Council, but to have leadership that _looked_ like it was one of the Ricks, chosen by the Ricks, who would have the best interests of all of the Citadel's Ricks at heart. A symbolic and ceremonial "president".
      ...and then a certain Morty ran for that office.
      But hey, I'm _uuuuurp_ just spitballin' here.

    • @MRCKify
      @MRCKify 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I like the idea, but the low-skill division of labor is enforced by the storytellers' need to reach a certain conclusion than because of any nature of production we could think of. Why does the Citadel need Ricks to fulfill such domestic roles when it's original function was to be a trans-dimensional military post? Even though that military function originally (S1E10) is subdivided into an august patrician council, a police force, a Seal Team Ricks, a self-defense militia and a meeting spot for the cowboy and Cronenburg to meet, ever thing necessary to Rick defense past that needs mostly some automation and a few supervisory Ricks.
      It doesn't work, but if the writer's don't write it that way, they can't enunciate how they believe the world works.
      Otherwise, a high-average, fat-tailed distribution of intelligence (the mean intelligence is overqualified to the challenge of creating pickle prosthetics and a 2-lb laser cannon from rats parts and things around the office) automates everything in about one hour.

    • @MRCKify

      It's likely a reference to what happens to people at the bottom or lower ends of a class system. They have much poorer education and tests have shown that IQ, capability and competence decreases in a person who is told, or who comes to understand, that they are below the rest of society. These Ricks didn't automate it all with robots because they actually no longer realise they have the ability to, which means they actually do no longer have the ability to. The Ricks at the top don't build them to keep it this way. At the extreme end this happens most in slavery, which some argue the working class of capitalist societies are slaves of some kind or another. After all, if we didn't need plumbers or farmers etc, there would be no need for a class system or capitalism.

      Kartana Nah, it couldn't be, Rick injected Toxic Morty back into Morty and besides, Rick and Morty never actually went to Ricklantis in person in this episode. Everything that happened in the episode was contained within an isolated environment which is why it was so easy to get away with so much and it's why the episode was so packed full of content. It's a diversion from the main serialization of the story that drops some clever hints about parts of Morty's personality and character that we've only gotten a peek at in the past like in the episode "Look Who's Purging Now." In that regard, Detoxified Morty could be evil but that doesn't apply to this episode and no one really knows if we'll ever see Detoxified Morty again or if that was just a one time thing used to make a point. That said, Morty does have a dark side but it seems suppressed by his lack of confidence and self worth. This is what his toxicity represented so it's also possible that even if we don't see that particular metaphor carry on we will see him do generally bad things or at least self serving things whenever he's feeling sure of himself. That trait will probably always coincide with him breaking free of Rick somehow.

    The themes associated with the Rick who escaped the assembly line eerily parallels the themes in 50 Million Merits in Black Mirror. Everything is commodified, people are assembled on bicycles, and even any form of rebellion being commodified as well. I wonder if that episode had influenced this episode by any chance

  • @MrSupernaturalLife
    @MrSupernaturalLife 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    This episode reminded me of "Fifteen Million Merits" from the show Black mirror,
    where a character's act of rebellion is not seen as an act of heroism, but becomes commercialized as a spectacle/entertainment that only ends up benefiting the consumerism.

    The Latin phrase on the white board was likely Acta Non Verba (or Facta non Verbum) it means "Deeds (or Actions) not words". Evil Morty literally says, "Speeches are for campaigning, now is the time for action".

  • @kingofsting19
    @kingofsting19 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Latin phrase written on the chalkboard is likely "Facta Non Verba", meaning "deeds, not words". If I had to guess, it's meant to play on the fact that the motto is usually employed in an "actions speak louder than words" sort of way, but in the dynamic of Ricks and Mortys, it means that Mortys are supposed to do what they're told and not talk back.

    What you said about wood working, and spending time with the family, reminded me of the Sumerian Myth, where their slave race, the Igigi (Gods which the Anuna/ Anunaki defeated and enslaved) had a massive rebellion. The Myth goes, that the Igigi were working every day, and they were dyeing. So they started a revolt. Enki and Enlil had no idea how to fix the situation. So they called their father, Anu, the sky god. He basically swoops down, and say's "this better not be no fuckries". Together, they decide the slaves should have one day off a week. The Igigi stop dying, the works getting done, and everyones happy.
    It's kinda like going on Holiday. You feel great while your away, then get super depressed when your back "home". Then you work harder, to save up for the next holiday.

      Infinite Ricks. Infinite Citadels along the central finite curve. There is a citadel somewhere that DOES do that. Presumably it is just to give the Ricks something to do for money, since it is a society that runs on money, and they don't have the resources for everyone to be rich, especially after the Citadel being destroyed once already. A state based on compesation needs things for people to do, and the best and most expendable resource they have is Ricks

    • @michaelwittering

    Surprised that Wisecrack didn't know the Latin phrase on the chalkboard.
    Facta, non verba translates to "Deeds, not words" or to take action rather than to speak. This is obviously a reference to what Evil Morty was talking about at the end, where now is not the time for speeches, but for action.
    In the school, the deeds that Morties were trained to do was just listen to their Ricks. The deeds President Morty wanted, though, is something different. They are different interpretations of the phrase, as actions can still mean servitude rather than independent and original thoughts.

    Scary thing is, Evil Morty may not be content with even this. He may see any independently operating Ricks/Mortys out there who have no desire to so much as step foot in the Citadel as potential threats to be eliminated. Add a brainwashed Phoenix Person (and handler) to the mix and your left with the "swimverse's" Rick & Morty caught between a rock and a hard place.

    Kinda reminds me of Black Mirror S01E02 ("Fifty Million Merits").
    There, the act of rebellion becomes a system-reinforcing commodity as well.
    It remains to be seen if the Rickverse will really offer no change whatsoever, or if the creators will allow for a smidgen of progress, just like in Black Mirror the Origami penguin becomes 3-dimensional in the end.

    "We could argue that this escape to the simple life is a ... essential part of its [the system's] functioning" The commodification of escapism gives the person a reprieve without helping them achieve any constructive means of truly breaking free from the system which created the desire for escapism in the first place.

      It's because you're only thinking of this last campaign where they pushed Bernie Sanders out of the way. But Evil Morty isn't Bernie or Trump, he's Obama. It was Because of Obama's win that people engaged in such backlash during the latest election, which I assure you, was the weirdest and non-typical election we've had in the last century.

    • @unmog4223
      @unmog4223 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe, but the video specifically said "recent" election. 8 years ago isnt very recent. Also I was comparing evil Morty to Bernie... I was comparing him to Jill Stein and Gary Johnson. They wouldnt let third parties in on the debates.
      Sort of similar with how all the other runners were Rick, Morty would be a minority party. Would say theres a third party, but if the only parties are Rick and Morty, then its still a two party system... Im getting off in the weeds here about the technicalities. :p
