From all accounts the melody has been around for many many years and it's not clear that he actually wrote it. I have a piano score of favourite spanish melodies that belonged to my mother which was published around 1900 and I also have a guitar copy of it attributed to Barrios. Fortea published it in the 1920's but did he write it - who knows. More research needed I think but enjoy playing it.
Without hearing you play it, that would be difficult, but I would suggest you practice it slowly and listen to every note and chord that you play making sure that your timing is correct and that you get a good tone from the guitar. Why not do a video!
