Fascinating how in partitas we get a fuller range of expression of the texts of the chorales. I do think it is important that each variation be based on particular verses and give expression to the text; that way a set of variations can express better the complex and contrasting moods of the chorale more family.

Funny how my Harmony teacher in college who saw me playing the organ, while improvising, without shoes scolded me, and here you are doing just fine 🤔🙂. I appreciate your taste in socks too; somehow they match the mood of the video.

Lovely music, yet again, Paul. I normally like organ music blasting out - but your contrast of soft and loud was so interesting and I actually preferred the quieter version. I notice you like penguins!! Every time I watch you play, I see new penguins. This time, the stuffed toys. Anyone who likes penguins has to be a really nice person. Love the one /// Hate the other... Count me as strange but I loved them both.... I could see the efficacy in both .... I will say that the flute version was easier to understand then the mass of sounds of the first version

A glorious and meditative composition played with devotion. Both the loud and the quiet versions are awesome but together they become a masterpiece. I would like to hear them played in a church. Why? Some years ago I attended a concert in St Paul’s (London) and the organist, who apparently knew very well both the instrument and the acoustics of the cathedral, played Medelssohn’s Organ Sonata no 2. The Adagio (quiet) is touchingly beautiful as it follows the “loud” Grave. Paul, thanks for reviving my memories, too.

One more surprise, definitely! What a difference between the two renditions, how to transform the sound color and rhythm, go from majestic to meditative: a geat BRAVO.

Your penguin socks love the pedals- love the transition to the flutes - when you get a chance Paul play this again on a large instrument with brilliant acoustics in the church -love this as you have recorded it.

An impressive toccata based on a great hymn tune. As a strong powerful toccata, it has strength and grandeur, but Paul demonstrates the versatility of his own composition by performing it on a soft flute registration which changes the character completely and offers perhaps a quite meditation for Lent. When I took organ lessons years ago I was strongly admonished to not play without shoes on. Is that more common now?
Well, thats still true to an extent - but at home it just feels more natural playing without shoes and the music isn’t hard, so there is no need for them from a technical point if view 😀

Georg Neumark - another composer I`ve never heard of, so back to google! ( I assume it is based on his 1641 work?) Like othe other comments I found both versions very good but perhaps I come down in favour of the quieter interpretation - it`s easier to pick out the contrasting melodic lines???
