This reminds me of when I was in high school, and I would put my pencil in my hair while I was doing homework, and then forget that it was in my hair, so I couldn't do my homework because I couldn't find my pencil.
I would do the same thing, put my hair in a bun at lunch and then promptly forget about it. But I alway thought it was a good idea to keep my pencil from getting lost. To be fair it did work I was just too ditzy to remember.
Most of the fancy hairstyles you see on Instagram and such just aren't intended for everyday wear, honestly. You need a lot of products to keep it together, and good luck to you if there's even a little wind. They're better suited for photoshoots/short wear/formal events where all the products are worth it.
The first bun has some history! In Joseon dynasty of Korea (1300s~1800s), hair was all the rage. Different hairstyles expressed what social class you were and other things like marriage. For the first bun, it looks a lot like jjokjin meori. This hairstyle indicated you are married. They would braid the hair, which due to tradition would be long, bring the tail to the begginning of the braid, tie it with a ribbon, then have the hair go over the tie (like in the video if the video had a tie), then put a binyeo which is a stick that acts as a pin. Binyeo can be made out of wood or stone for poor people, even slaves, and higher class people can have jade, gold, and others with designs and decorations. The upper class and royals wore jam, which is like binyeo, but made out of the best materials and it had different names based on the design: yongjam for dragon and bongjam for pheonix.
That moment when you got exited for new hairstyles and then realize that if you wrap your hair around your hand once, there is no length of hair left over... And here I thought my hair was getting long XD
I wrapped my hair around three fingers instead of my whole palm and managed to get the first bun style to stay. It was just smaller than what's shown in the video. Hope that helps.
Ever since this video, the silk knot has become one of my staple hairstyles. Thank you so much for sharing this awesome technique. It lasts all day, and it is a great way to get that cute short haired ponytail look without having to chop off my hair!
I usually use a pencil. I got these really cool kids star sticks (they called them wands) 5 for $1 from kmart they are pink and the others are silver and have some facets to reflect light I always gets lovely comments on them ☺
I bought pins, combs, and hair sticks because I’m sick of ponytails. Something not shown is how to part and twist or braid front of hair before putting into a bun. I have flyaways, and rather than using product, I part my hair to the side, and take hair that is where bangs would be, and twist it, pin it in the back, then make my bun. It makes hair look whimsical. Also, because my hair is long, I can twist most hair going around a couple times but then stop, use pin to secure decorative pin off to one side, and let about six inches of hair cascade untucked on the other side. I then scrunch hair into messy curls, I do that in combination with a side part with a twisted front section. No one I know uses hair sticks, combs, or pins. I went online and bought fancy ones, and get many compliments on my hair! Thank you for this video, I just learned a new way to do a bun.
This video helped me expand on the range of hairstyles I do, a tip if there's anyone who wants to try these hairstyles but don't have a hairstick or don't want to buy one jus to find out they're not into it, although they may have some durability issues, a chopstick can work well as a replacement for an actual hairstick
I wear the Nautilus bun all the time. It really does last all day and it's really comfy. I'm definitely going to try the silk knot bun. It looks fun, having a short ponytail sticking out. Great tutorial!
I have super long hair and do that last one all the time. I love hair sticks, they work better, are more versatile and definitely cuter than hair ties (ie scrunchies). I love all 3 versions you showed and have already mastered them. Can't wait to wear them out!
I've only ever used the nautilus but I will definitely be trying the figure 8 bun now. I've made it a tradition to buy a hair stick from every place I travel to :)
Oh my gosh, thank you so much. This tutorial is not only doable, the updo also really stays the whole day. Bonus points for looking so cool. I'm so happy with those 😍😊 (Also just being able to pull the stick out and go all dramatic is so satisfying.)
I’m really happy I found this video and your channel!!! I have very long, naturally straight, find hair (thank you, Asian genes). Like, down to my hips long. I didn’t know how to tie a bun without all my hair falling out or using a clip, but now I can do these hairstyles with a really pretty hair stick! Thanks again! :)
Fellow Asian with super long hair here! I don't want to cut it because I love it, but sometimes you need to get it out of the way and these are super useful
Love the 3rd variation. I tend to get headaches when I use hairsticks because of the pulling on my scalp. Finally my hair was long enough to try this. An effortless and pretty way to get a short ponytail too. Showed this to a friend with the same headache problem and she loves it too.
not only is this video amazing, but I am now obsessed with that etsy shop!! i have one of their pirate hairsticks in purpleheart and I'm in love with it!!!! tysm!
I'm 53 years old and could never figure out how to get my hair to stay in a bun. Hell, I couldn't even figure out how to do a bun to begin with. This video was so great! I did all of them on the first try and as I type this, I'm shaking my head and the bun isn't falling out. I'm using a pencil because I don't have any official hair sticks, but that's okay. Maybe I have a package of chop sticks kicking around. Thank you so much!
These look great but I guess they only work on hair that exact length and thickness...my hair is pretty long, but much thicker and I can't get any of them to stay in :( Guess I'll have to stick with your awesome warrior hair ideas instead! :D
These are really only good for super-long, medium to fine hair. They're great for that kind of hair, but prey much impossible if your hair is really thick or a bit too short. Hairsticks are still doable! Just not these specific styles. Try a French twist, it requires a much smaller length:thickness ratio.
Nah you can make it work. I thought my hair was too thin and not quite long enough (comes to bottom of my shoulder blades) or it was too slick. It just takes a little bit of practice. Also try two sticks. To get the first one I learned I had to wrap my hair around my fingers not my palm and I have to use two hair sticks. I sat there for about 15 to 30 minutes just redoing it until I figured it out.
I just bought two hair sticks from AKC Woodworking because of this video. I tried the figure 8 yesterday and it easily survived the ride home with my convertible top down. I was impressed!
I love how clear, quick and informative this was! Really convinced me with those experiments of the rollercoaster/rock climbing/wind, what a way to show real life results
The worst hair decision I made was cutting my hair into a bob when I was 8 because it didn't suit me at all. 10 years later it's almost down to my but because about half a year ago I cut about 2 inches off since it had been a while since I had a trim.
I experimented a bit and I think I found a variation for shorter Hair on the first Bun. Start of like in the Video. Before you put the "loop of hair" around the Bais of the Hair insert instead a Hairneedle through it. Then with the Hairneedle push the loop down and pierce through the middle of the Hair. Then also pin through the loop on the other sides. The Thing is because you use the Hairneedle instead of your fingers to move the Loop it is easier to keep control of the shorter hair, so it's not falling out. My Hair is like 5cm other my shoulders and ar cut shorter in front. With this Variation it did work just fine🙂. Just keep in Mind it will Look a little bit different but it will stay in place good!
I came here for the how to, and was really exited for some reason to see that you’re using AKCWoodworking’s hair sticks. They’re exactly the reason I’m looking for new bun styles in the first place :)
Me tooooo!!!! I just bought the bocote wood sword because of her recommendation! And I’m absolutely in love!!!!! Thank you so much for making this video
Thank you for this video! I have a beautiful hair stick that I never use because I can't make a secure bun that lasts. The best part is how quick and easy these are.
I've done all three of these for several years now and they do tend to be comfortable, sturdy buns, even with my fine, quite slippery hair. I'm currently just beyond classic, but was at knee until 2 months ago.
I’m just getting my feet wet with hair sticks since I have really thick long hair that is not contained with hair ties or pins for very long. I rely constantly on a long side braid, but sometimes it gets in my way, gets really frizzy and tangled easily, and once even caught on a girl’s backpack zipper forcing me to walk behind her for at least 5 yards working to untie my hair! These look great and suuuper easy to do! Can’t wait!
I used to wear hairsticks all the time when I still had long hair. Now I have a bob and although I don't regret cutting my hair off, I do miss wearing the hairsticks and all the fun accesoires!
I'm actually guy who never did this before and wanted to try it out, it workedfirst try because of your well done explanation :) maybe not as well as you did it but well nonetheless. thank you so much, these are fun :D
i was TODAY years old when I learned what a nautilus bun was!! 🤣 I always thought it was just a regular bun and I sucked at hair styling so it never looked good on me! THANK YOU! after 36 years I can FINALLY have a nice looking bun!!! 👵
AGHHH THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I've never had luck with buns because my hair is so ridiculously and annoyingly thick but these actually work!!!! I can feel the air on my neck now!!!!!
I love the Nautilus and Figure 8 buns! My hair is not long enough yet but I saved this video in my Favorites to come back to this later in the year. Love your videos - thank you for sharing! x Davie
How long is your hair? Mine is a little longer than armpit length and I can do the first two. They are teeny tiny, but they are serviceable. I haven't tried the third one.
It’s been over a year I love your style still and I was so sad I lost my pirate sword hair pin like in the third style so I got another one from the same shop!! Thank you thank you I love my new hair stick I got from him the black cutlass
Did a trial run of the nautilus bun. It held through hours of school, errands, and a small workout. Had to modify how it's done to fit my thick hair though. Other than that 10/10 best bun tutorial ever.
I'm convinced. I need a hair stick. That being said, a Nautilus bun is easily modified so as to be totally accessory-free if the hair reaches mid-back or longer.
I couldnt find any hair ties, only some hair sticks I bought awhile back that I couldnt figure out how to use. Since I've never used this type in my hair, theyd slip out. Since I was rushed I did the first style, and it worked out great! So very happy♡
My hair isn't quite long enough in its natural state (it's relatively curly) for the last one but I tried anyway and my hair just makes it through the knot but it staying in place really well and looks nice :) glad I found this
I've been doing a simple twist bun with my hairstick for years but your figure 8 one looks so much better and it doesn't stick out so far! i just wish I could do the last one with the knot and the hair hanging down but my hair is too thick and course to go into the knot. Great video!
I have a long hair and always forgot to bring a hair tie cuz i'm always in a hurry soo i found this video and it helps a lot. I tried it all, its neat and it last a long time thank you very much💓
I cut 13 inches off my hair in '19 (cut it to the top of my shoulder blades) & decided to start doing fun things like this with my hair lol fun things that would be easier with long hair! This video helped with doing fancier stick twists, though, than what I was already doing 😀👍 I have fine hair, so it's nice to know it stays!
I've been working on the first bun for months. Sometimes it slides down after a couple hours; other times I get five or more hours out of it (by then I'm tired of it and take it down). Today's lasted several hours, including through a change of shirt and a shower. I don't have a hair stick, but I do have two chopsticks that do the job. Thanks!
I have ALWAYS tried to put my hair up in a pinless pun with the stick and it always falls down. The 1st one didn't work my hair is so thick but the 2nd one, that one I figured out how to modify it slightly using your method and IT WORKS!! Thanks for this trick seriously. Hair ties break, clips break, and I can never find a good way to put my hair up without getting a headache.
I have done your "silk knot" bun for years now. It is the easiest bun for me to do quick. Also, if i don't pull the tail through all the way and (i cannot describe it well) push the base wrap through the middle and fan it out it becomes a beautiful stick free bun!
Aw I found your little "vlog" sections showing how long the buns lasted really cute! Thanks for such a helpful tutorial, maybe I'll give some old hairsticks a try again! I used to get so frustrated that my hair would fall out due to its length and weight.
I like them all. I was able to do the first and last but I just can't get the second one. I've have always had trouble twisting my hair and keeping it that way to make a bun.
I really love this hair tutorials. My favorites are the second and last. I often do the second since many years now, witch I find the easiest to do, and I will try the 3rd tomorrow because it looks amazing ☺️! Thank you so much for sharing!
I can do the nautilus and the silk knot now (and I love them! They're so quick and look good all the while lasting for quite some time) but I cannot for the life of me figure out the figure of eight. I followed your steps down to the letter but mine either doesn't come together at all or best case, doesn't look like an 8 and falls apart in like five seconds, while yours lasted a roller coaster ride as well! Could you give me any tips to get it right?
I thought I'd never be able to do one of these buns properly (because I have medium length hair), but I managed to do the second bun and it looks really cute! Thank you so much for the video :)
This reminds me of when I was in high school, and I would put my pencil in my hair while I was doing homework, and then forget that it was in my hair, so I couldn't do my homework because I couldn't find my pencil.
HAHAHAH relatable

Yeah and I remember doing that in elementary and almost broke down cying because I couldn't get any work done.
Lol same, but I went to an art school so I'd wind up with a collection of pencil crayons in my hair
can’t relate never did homework
I always wanted TH-camrs to show how long/good hair styles actually last! Thank you!
yeah, all those fancy-shmancy updos - they fall apart pretty fast, especially if a person has heavy and/or sleek (slippery) hair.
Most of the fancy hairstyles you see on Instagram and such just aren't intended for everyday wear, honestly. You need a lot of products to keep it together, and good luck to you if there's even a little wind. They're better suited for photoshoots/short wear/formal events where all the products are worth it.

Thank you! I love these buns and knew they had some kind of Asian history attached to them but had no idea what it was.
Thank you! I loved learning this. Promoting understanding promotes peace
NERD (lovingly from another history nerd)
Very interesting!
That moment when you got exited for new hairstyles and then realize that if you wrap your hair around your hand once, there is no length of hair left over... And here I thought my hair was getting long XD
Yes relatable
I wrapped my hair around three fingers instead of my whole palm and managed to get the first bun style to stay. It was just smaller than what's shown in the video. Hope that helps.
Samme
Lmao, same
Same use you index and middle finger instead
Ever since this video, the silk knot has become one of my staple hairstyles. Thank you so much for sharing this awesome technique. It lasts all day, and it is a great way to get that cute short haired ponytail look without having to chop off my hair!
Yay I'm so glad you like it!
@@silvousplaits i am not able to do the first one 😭
I love it for the same reason.
Using a pencil, I figured out the first one. I can now justify a trip to Claire's to buy an actual hairstick.
I usually use a pencil. I got these really cool kids star sticks (they called them wands) 5 for $1 from kmart they are pink and the others are silver and have some facets to reflect light I always gets lovely comments on them ☺
I doin it whith chop sticks little bit sharped whith sandpaper.
@@Merry357 same, lol. Modified it a bit & it cease to look like chopstick too, & it's my top favourite when I have to pull an emergency buns
I got a hair stick from china. Kinda a long way to go (I live in north America)
@@Merry357 I'd say yay on that aside from the fact it's kinda disrespectful to Japanese culture 💀

I wanted to say thank you for this tutorial! It was easy to follow and the most comfortable hairstyle I have ever worn!
I wear the Nautilus bun all the time. It really does last all day and it's really comfy. I'm definitely going to try the silk knot bun. It looks fun, having a short ponytail sticking out. Great tutorial!
Not gonna lie, I really really liked having a cute flippy ponytail :)
I have super long hair and do that last one all the time. I love hair sticks, they work better, are more versatile and definitely cuter than hair ties (ie scrunchies). I love all 3 versions you showed and have already mastered them. Can't wait to wear them out!
I find that the last one actually works better with a medium hair fork, which is two prong and just an inch longer than the coiled part is wide.
I've only ever used the nautilus but I will definitely be trying the figure 8 bun now. I've made it a tradition to buy a hair stick from every place I travel to :)
since this comment is from a while ago, do you still do get a hairstick from places you visit? :D
Oh my gosh, thank you so much. This tutorial is not only doable, the updo also really stays the whole day. Bonus points for looking so cool.
I'm so happy with those 😍😊

I love those wooden hairsticks. Gandalf's staff and the long daggers are musts in my collection.
I absolutely LOVE the first one. It works so well.. tight and secure even with my layered hair!
it took me about four months but i finally accomplished the first one! it’s so stable 😻 i love it so much thank you!!!!
These look great but I guess they only work on hair that exact length and thickness...my hair is pretty long, but much thicker and I can't get any of them to stay in :( Guess I'll have to stick with your awesome warrior hair ideas instead! :D
There are some with a double prong. I’m assuming they work, because I saw this one girl with knee length hair using it.
These are really only good for super-long, medium to fine hair. They're great for that kind of hair, but prey much impossible if your hair is really thick or a bit too short. Hairsticks are still doable! Just not these specific styles. Try a French twist, it requires a much smaller length:thickness ratio.
Nooo don't worry, I can sit on my hair and easily pull all 3! It's all about the combo of tightness and good stick placing :)
Nah you can make it work. I thought my hair was too thin and not quite long enough (comes to bottom of my shoulder blades) or it was too slick. It just takes a little bit of practice. My hair is very thick and can do these. Yes these styles (especially the nautilus) can only be done on hair a certain length x
I saw a lot of videos how to make a bun with a hair stick but none of them explained it as well as this one, thank you so much 😍
This was posted 7 years ago, and today you just taught me how to use hair sticks!! Thank you for sharing ❤
I love all of them! My hair finally grew long enough for the silk knot bun, so I tried it out today, and I'm happy with it.
i can't tell if my hair isn't long enough or too thick to do these buns, but i will keep trying. thanks for the tutorial!
* sees this video *
* realizes I cut my hair *
I'll do this when it grows out again then haha
Has your hair grown out yet?
The worst hair decision I made was cutting my hair into a bob when I was 8 because it didn't suit me at all. 10 years later it's almost down to my but because about half a year ago I cut about 2 inches off since it had been a while since I had a trim.
I can relate. I got bored of quarantine and cut my long hair into a curly bob hairstyle. No regrets tho.
@@human-tk2fo I cut my hair again this quarantine after growing it out long (to my chest). I guess the long hair life isn't just for me 😂

God bless you! I am waaay too thrilled all of them work so PERFECT!!!
Much more stable than a hair tie!
I love AKCWoodworking! His sticks are really good, I currently have a pirate cutlass and Orcrist but now I think I need Gandalf's staff!

that sword hair stick is honestly the cutest thing ever though
Thank you for this video! I have a beautiful hair stick that I never use because I can't make a secure bun that lasts. The best part is how quick and easy these are.
That hairstick is the best hair thing I've ever seen.
Thumbs up. Beautiful hair and uber cute hair stick.
I really appreciate that you describe where the stick gotta in and out in relation to the bun, good job!
Just tried the figure 8 bun and it's now my favorite thing.

Best part is the prove of lasting. Thank you for the effort.
the figure 8 is the one i use most. it holds up so well. THANK YOU.

Thanks so much! I've never been able to figure out how to get these buns to stay until now. I've had my hair up all day in the last style!
My hair is really heavy and can never hold a bun, but the third one is somehow holding and it looks great! Thank you so much!!!
That's so cool that you made your own bun
Thanks!
I absolutely love the second one actually
I have ALWAYS tried to put my hair up in a pinless pun with the stick and it always falls down. The 1st one didn't work my hair is so thick but the 2nd one, that one I figured out how to modify it slightly using your method and IT WORKS!! Thanks for this trick seriously. Hair ties break, clips break, and I can never find a good way to put my hair up without getting a headache.
I love that last one.
Hair stick buns are my favorite. I only have shoulder length hair now, but my hair sticks are still good.
I am unreasonably excited that you rockclimb
This was so helpful! I just got 2 hair sticks and I needed some hairstyles! Thank you!
My hair is finally long enough to do these! I did #1 the other day and it worked a treat, looking forward to trying the others too!
I am in love with last one, so amazing😻
Love your tutorial, long lasting without the use of hairband!
I like them all. I was able to do the first and last but I just can't get the second one. I've have always had trouble twisting my hair and keeping it that way to make a bun.
Thanks for introducing me to the world of hairsticks!
I didn't think it was possible to have a hair bun and a ponytail at the same time. I'd like to give this a try, thanks!
I really love this hair tutorials. My favorites are the second and last. I often do the second since many years now, witch I find the easiest to do, and I will try the 3rd tomorrow because it looks amazing ☺️! Thank you so much for sharing!
huh, the first one actually worked for me. I never do hairstyle tutorials correctly, so this is kind of exciting for me lolol
this video is useful and made my day! it's nice seeing how long they stay!!
I can't figure that one out either!
I thought I'd never be able to do one of these buns properly (because I have medium length hair), but I managed to do the second bun and it looks really cute! Thank you so much for the video :)
