Winching Logs with a Tractor Uphill | Skidding Cone Saved the Day

  • Today I'm out recovering trees that were blown down over the last few months in one of the many wind storms that has hit my area. Using one of my useful tools; the tractor winch, I'm bringing these wind-damaged trees from a low-lying area of the forest, uphill to my skidding trail. One of the downsides of working on such rough and steep terrain is that the walking can be difficult and dangerous. Add in a touch of snow and the ground is slippery as I'm trying to snake my way through the down trees and stumps to attach the choker chains and winch line to my trees. The easy part is pulling the rope attached to my Wallenstein FX85 skidding winch which then takes over the hard work and pulls the trees to my landing area. One thing is for certain, this winch has more power than I think I"ll ever use. As you'll see in today's video, at one point a log got caught against a stump and instead of stalling the tractor, the winch pulled the stump right out of the ground with the log. Now that's power! Glad everyone is here and hope your'e all doing well, here we go!

    You pulled up a couple of nice logs. Your winch sure is paying for itself. One other tool that would be handy to have in the woods is your cant hook. It would help wrestling the logs around

    I spent a number of years high lead logging in B.C. in the early 60s. A very useful trick when you are hooking up a log is where the bell on the choker is. By correct positioning you can induce a roll to bypass or lift over ( Usually as close to the bottom ) and even when you run into a log that is laying cross your path. I could write a book on how many times I came close to getting killed by chokers, mainline, haul back and even rocks dislodged by some logs been drug in to the landing. BE Careful Love the little winch.

    TIM from Canada. What if you would have cut the stump around what you were working on. Cut the bad logs that are around your pile.. if you have the winch already out. Pull the bad stuff away from your piles. These are all suggestions that can be thought of as you’re doing this if there is a problem taking the piles of wood out of your area. Look at what you can pull out with your winch or cut it off at the ground and then come back in the spring time relook at it and figure it out

    I still don't know how I feel about the nosecone, seems to work with just one log ok. Two or more just drags along for the ride. A winch can haul 3or4 of those small trees you are pulling with no problem, I know you pulling up hill with lots of debris, makes a difference.

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Spend a little more time on your twitch trail,, fill it with brush,, cut those stumps down,, back up to your wood,, run the idle 2200-rpm's or more,, parking break on,, make the trail outta tops & brush!! Pulling from the tops will break off the limbs.. If you get a mud hole,, twitch some trees limb & cut into holes.. Drive in & make a turn-a-round every 50 --100 feet!! Aloha stay safe..

    • @sawingwithsandy

      There is the option to buy this sand winch with a remote but it’s a lot more. I thought about the remote but I’d end up making the same number of trips back and forth as I’d still need to pull the winch cable back out to rig up the next log.

    Nose cone is a great tool to have. If the cable snaps it will stop or atleast slow the whip action that comes back at the person in front of the winch . Have you thought of using the strong cordage that dosent have that snap back tendencies . Feel real bad for your tree lose but I feel your pain living in hurricane zone . I’m sure you’ll dig in and make the most of them though. Wish I had time to come help you drag them out of the bush.Hope to see vids of lose turned to gain from them. Stay safe and keep up the good work

      @@sawingwithsandy I have doubts about it too. But the Steel cable dosent care who it snaps back at. It’s kinda dang if you do or dang if you don’t , but the cone on either is a good safety measure , I’ve seen winch lines pulling logs snap and men on the side of the mountain say a prayer for not getting hurt

    Do they make a wireless remote for the winch ? It would surely be easier to operate the winch from besides the log.

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They do make the same winch with a remote. It’s more money but I figured since I’d have to make the same number of trips back and forth to the logs it wasn’t worth it to me

    Question, would using choker chains be less stress on your cable? I noticed the end of your cable is getting pretty bent up.

      I’m not too sure. The winch Cable comes setup to have the first log hooked up with the cable but in the future of the cable gets damaged I could always go a different route

    Man this is far away from the proper way to skid a log...clear the logs from branches this way they will slide smoothly on the ground up the hill, second clear the path from debree and other logs which are standing on the way atherwise you will ruin your winch, cable and skidding cone. If the wimch stops pulling do not force it...obviously there is an obsticle, try clearing ot, try also using snatch block for redirecting the logs
