This is what people in America imagine what dating is like in England (just so everyone knows, I’m an American and my dad was born in England. Lol I know it’s not like that)
Does anyone know a community or a way to meet people who are interested in the Victorian era? I am the same age as Michael and wish to meet people with the same interests.
I've been sitting here trying to come up with the words that describe what I'm thinking and all I can say is that those two are just plain cool! It's just fun to see people who are different yet not pretentious and uppity, and it just seems like they thoroughly enjoy living in the past. More power to you both!
I think the reason we like this time period were the manners, I mean honestly what girl does not like or fall in Love with a guy who is willing to take his time getting to know her, court her, most dates now days end in a one night stand, some Women like that, but there are some who long to be courted by a Gentleman. I know also a lot of people pick out the bad points of the Victorian Era, which I will admit some of it was not so glamorous but that is the joy of living between both worlds, you can have things such as manners, the History, but still have modern things as well, most of us use that more like Currier and Ives version of it, Meet Me in St. Louis version of it, because we can in this modern time and yes we know bad things went on in the Victorian Era, good things did too and that is the joy of living between, because you can take those good points and enjoy them with out the working class being mad at you or looked down on by high society, most pick that middle ground where you are the happy family life, the Husband respects the Wife, the Wife Loves her Husband, they are a little more equal. It is hard to explain if you are not interested in it, you study all of it, even the working class portion of it, but you can live in whatever class you want to, because in today's society class lines are blurred, they are still there, but not as important as they were in the Victorian Era, those lines were set in stone and you just knew not to cross them and if you did there were punishments, but in this world you are able to do what you want, be it just for fun, life, acting. I myself live between both times and Love it very much, I feel the happiest in my Victorian form, that is my true self, but I also have to live in this modern world, so I've found a balance between the two and yes, you do get questions, yes you do get stared at, but if it makes you happy, be it, live it and the right people will support you.

I'm allowed to like a time period even if I can't fully live in it. As a matter of fact I am Loyal to my Husband, he is also handicapped and yet unlike many shallow people today, I believe in sticking by someone you Love. I don't live in a fantasy, because it is how I feel, I don't even own a cell phone, dry my clothes on a line, bake, read a lot, I clean for a living and take walks, I live as much as I can in the past in this modern world. I'm not one of the ones that doesn't know anything about the time period but just likes the look, please don't assume I am.

People had to work in extreme conditions for more than 15 hours a day to barely earn something to eat. So this is literally less than 10% if there were middle class people. The people dressing like this and going for strolls in the evening were considered RICH and less than 10% were that rich. People had to work in factories from dusk till dawn or in workhouses which were places where people would be beaten and live in poor conditions or in dangerous jobs because there was nothing else. The rich didnt have to work but could spend their time having fun. While the rest of the population worked everyday without stopping to earn the stale bread they ate. So this is utterly innacurate. People think that everyone in this period of time had it easy and only cared about dressing and looking good. Thats why its not educational AT ALL. No. You weren't born in the wrong era. You can still wear Victorian clothes, still see upper class Victorian buildings (as I'm assuming you mean the upper class ones and not the slums), and see the machinery in museums. But you can also recieve (if you're from the "first world"): access to medicine that is actually effectively, food that is vetted to ensure it's safe to eat/drink, modern technology, you won't be arrested for being gay, you don't have to worry about your wallpaper slowly killing you, you can go a cross the world in only a couple of days, etc. etc. It's okay to like certain aesthetic things from previous eras, but don't think that all these eras are is pretty clothes and buildings, just like now they had hardships, and most of their hardships were even worse than what we face today.

it's not a false accent it's Queen's English, it's a way of saying words to be proper that was used in Victorian England. It's not an accent it's a pronunciation based off the time.

There were standard, proper, appropriate ways to court and the other kind, too. Depending on who it was you were courting and what for. Just like nowadays. Only, back then, all the social rules and courting etiquette were much clearer. Well raised, polished girls knew how to behave inthe company of a suitor and themen knew how they were expected to conduct themselves. So the whole courting gameflowed pretty smoothly. You could then just focuson getting to know the person better, revealing a little about yourself and ascertaining what ypurchances of agood relationship might be with this person. You didn't have to agonise over a whole lotof miscellaneous social style, etquette etc stuff, like now, because it was alreadydecided for you all the social rules people were expected to follow in various social scenarios eg courtship. It made life much simpler, easier having set behaviour, style etc rules to know what is appropriate and what is notwhen courting. Instead of the confusion and stress of dating in this era, when girls agonise over whether tohave sex on the first or second date and what he might do if you do or you don't agree... Or guys agonise over whether to go here or there, whether she likes his car etc etc. All this confusion started in the 60's with the arrival of second wave feminism that gave women more sexual freedom eg to dress more provocatively etc, leaving the guys very confused about how toreact to this newly won sexual freedom of expression girls boldly tried to exhibit, just to "seem cool" and with it, sexy, desirable, though, truth is, most girls were shit scared of what might happen....I can recall many long nights with very tearful teenage females discussing such matters till the wee small hours, wondering "what he might think if Isaid thos, wore that, did that, respondedto his mate saying Hi to me" and so on. It wasall very tribial stuff but the girls still agonised, even cried about it, especially on the numerous occasions whenconfused young men misinterpreted female signals and messages and ended up reacting in unexpected ways that threw the girls' emotions into a tail spin. Though, listening to some of the pop songs of that era, one gets the feeling that the boys suffered anequal amount of emotional pain and confusion about female wavering, insecure, unpredictable behaviour. One such song is One Two Three Red Light. With lyrics like: Every time I try to show I love you, one two red light... You ain't right to stop me... One two three , dedlight, don't stop me...etc etc" Clearly a case of a girl who desires a certain young man, starts to give him the come on and thensuddenly gets scared and pulls away, leaving the poor guy feeling very confused... There were other such songs back then. But inmore recent "girl power" era, this female sexual insecurity gave way to extreme femsle confidence, bordering onsheer brazen vulgarity eg a female song whose only lyric I can recall went "Would it be my fault, if I could turn you on..." (Well, yes, I think it would be, especially if you got pregnant as a result and then got dumped or murdered by some serial killer you managed to use your new found feminist sexual power to turn on...Sorry, sweetie... All your own fault!)

Ah yes, methane explosions due to improper plumbing, people boiling themselves alive in there gas heated baths, children dying early because of lead paint, poison/cleaning containers not properly labeled or similar to others so people are mostly unintentionally killing eachother by mixing chemicals up with regular items, shit everywhere because of horses and no proper cleaning systems, oh, and can't forget the lack of safety precautions for all those sturdy machines that ended up killing just as may as they helped.
No. You weren't born in the wrong era. You can still wear Victorian clothes, still see upper class Victorian buildings (as I'm assuming you mean the upper class ones and not the slums), and see the machinery in museums. But you can also recieve (if you're from the "first world"): access to medicine that is actually effectively, food that is vetted to ensure it's safe to eat/drink, modern technology, you won't be arrested for being gay, you don't have to worry about your wallpaper slowly killing you, you can go a cross the world in only a couple of days, etc. etc. It's okay to like certain aesthetic things from previous eras, but don't think that all these eras are is pretty clothes and buildings, just like now they had hardships, and most of their hardships were even worse than what we face today.

I think her normal accent does slip out occasionally, like she doesn't say everything in the correct way for Recieved Pronunciation or queen's English, but I think it's a solid attempt

There were standard, proper, appropriate ways to court and the other kind, too. Depending on who it was you were courting and what for. Just like nowadays. Only, back then, all the social rules and courting etiquette were much clearer. Well raised, polished girls knew how to behave inthe company of a suitor and themen knew how they were expected to conduct themselves. So the whole courting gameflowed pretty smoothly. You could then just focuson getting to know the person better, revealing a little about yourself and ascertaining what ypurchances of agood relationship might be with this person. You didn't have to agonise over a whole lotof miscellaneous social style, etquette etc stuff, like now, because it was alreadydecided for you all the social rules people were expected to follow in various social scenarios eg courtship. It made life much simpler, easier having set behaviour, style etc rules to know what is appropriate and what is notwhen courting. Instead of the confusion and stress of dating in this era, when girls agonise over whether tohave sex on the first or second date and what he might do if you do or you don't agree... Or guys agonise over whether to go here or there, whether she likes his car etc etc. All this confusion started in the 60's with the arrival of second wave feminism that gave women more sexual freedom eg to dress more provocatively etc, leaving the guys very confused about how toreact to this newly won sexual freedom of expression girls boldly tried to exhibit, just to "seem cool" and with it, sexy, desirable, though, truth is, most girls were shit scared of what might happen....I can recall many long nights with very tearful teenage females discussing such matters till the wee small hours, wondering "what he might think if Isaid thos, wore that, did that, respondedto his mate saying Hi to me" and so on. It wasall very tribial stuff but the girls still agonised, even cried about it, especially on the numerous occasions whenconfused young men misinterpreted female signals and messages and ended up reacting in unexpected ways that threw the girls' emotions into a tail spin. Though, listening to some of the pop songs of that era, one gets the feeling that the boys suffered anequal amount of emotional pain and confusion about female wavering, insecure, unpredictable behaviour. One such song is One Two Three Red Light. With lyrics like: Every time I try to show I love you, one two red light... You ain't right to stop me... One two three , dedlight, don't stop me...etc etc" Clearly a case of a girl who desires a certain young man, starts to give him the come on and thensuddenly gets scared and pulls away, leaving the poor guy feeling very confused... There were other such songs back then. But inmore recent "girl power" era, this female sexual insecurity gave way to extreme femsle confidence, bordering onsheer brazen vulgarity eg a female song whose only lyric I can recall went "Would it be my fault, if I could turn you on..." (Well, yes, I think it would be, especially if you got pregnant as a result and then got dumped or murdered by some serial killer you managed to use your new found feminist sexual power to turn on...Sorry, sweetie... All your own fault!)
