This is an underrated work by Schubert, written when he was 18 or 19 and not published until after his death. It's about half the length of the sprawling masterpieces he wrote later -- about 25 minutes to perform.
It's nicely structured, very Haydn-like, without the lengthy (and some would argue repetitive ) development of the later works. It's not brilliant music, not at all in the same league as what Mendelssohn was writing at 18, but it is full of gorgeous little Schubertian lines and gestures -- you hear it and immediately know the composer. Very hummable. Charming throughout.
I'd recommend it for quartet players who want to be introduced to Schubert because the violin part is not crazy difficult. Do this one, and then take on "Rosamunde." It's very fun to play and the three upper parts are challenging -- maybe the only drawback is the cello part isn't super well developed. But if you don't have a super accomplished cellist, maybe that's a good thing.
-- And I hasten to add, this is a terrific performance. This group, formed at Curtis, follows in the Guarneri Quartet's footsteps. Like the Guarneri, they play with impeccable precision, very tasteful but restrained phrasing and always a gorgeous sound. The Dover is one of the leading quartets in the world at this time.

I was just barely familiar with this particular quartet. Schubert had lots of beautiful music in him. The Dover Quartet has gone from nowhere to being one of my favorite ensembles. They play with warmth and balance and cut a fine appearance.

Amazing how the camera is always pointing at exactly the wrong player.

a very intelligent choice: Scubert & Shostakovich. An interesting dialog. A briliant interpretention!

Discovering this group has been a revelation. The modestly regarded G minor Schubert quartet is given really rich treatment which raises its stature enormously. The pedgree of the Shostakovich quartet is not in doubt but the tight ensemble and broad bandwidth dynamics really powers the playing along. imperious music making.

Would love to know their instrument makers, especially that viola. Pity it's never part of the details that are furnished.

No the label is incorrect, the Schubert quartet is onlyl 25 minutes, the 2nd half the video is the Shostakovich #3 -- which is also compact and very lovely.

Very skilled playing, but doesn't capture the essence of Schubert. Sounds like Brahms.
