The tools that Merlon gave to Steve were produced under contract to the U. S. government during WW2. I have been fortunate enough to have picked up a few of the 11/32 socket set tools over the years. These tools were cadmium plated due to the shortages of nickel and chromium during the war. I have read that the "WF" embossed on these tools stands for Wright Field, where the Material Division was based, issuing contracts to supply the U.S.A.A.F. during the war effort.
I have never heard of this stuff before! Learn something new every day!
Now I know what some of these unusual tools are in Dad's old tool box. Thanks for the info.
What's the story behind the 11/32 drive size? I can't figure out how to convince Google i don't want a socket for an 11/32 bolt.
@@Dan_Neely I am pretty sure that Plomb (later Pro Tools, later Proto) and Snap-on were the only tool manufacturers that produced the 11/32 drive socket sets for a short time. There should be some info on the vintage hand tool collector websites that might cover these oddities.
The very best part of that video was you and Jimmy enjoying the engine when you got home. I lost a good friend a couple of years back who would have been exactly the same. Good to see us old guys enjoying the mechanical toys. Loved it. Great video of the airplanes and such. Looking forward to seeing her start.

I lived in Buckeye when I worked on the Palo Verde back in 78.
That was after Joe City and St John's Salt River Project. Kind of miss the desert the desert.

Not sure if it would be too big but it sure would be neat if you put it in a truck or something, there was a 39 Plymouth with a radial engine in Hot Rod magazine a few years back that was super cool. The family who owns Colorado Auto & Parts built it.
Being a former Pratt & Whitney employee, I have a great interest and appreciation for radial engines. I only worked on commercial jet engine projects, but there was still some work going on for radial engines. There was a team of people building radial engine past to keep the engines supported with spare parts for vintage & historical aircraft. Looking forward to seeing/hearing this engine run!
I love the sound of radial engines. We have many Beavers flying over our house in the summer. There is also a DC-6 that flys cargo from a nearby airport that comes over fairly low. I worked a job one summer where I was flown around in a Beaver on floats. Both the Dads and oldest brothers of my wife and I worked long careers and retired from P&WA. Our Dads started work there in the 1940s. I worked on the assembly floor building jet engines in Middletown 1977-1979. I moved to Alaska and worked in electronics in the oil field commuting to work in 737s that I’m sure had some of the engines I helped assemble as we saw the customer on the engine assembly paperwork. A good friend of mine was an engineering supervisor there and retired in 2011.

I learned to fly in Yakima, WA in 1970. I was taught by an old guy named Charlie McCallister who was 67 or 68 at the time. Charlie's own pilots license hung on the wall in his office and it was signed by Orville Wright in 1927. Charlie died in 1998 at the ripe old age of 95 years. I love old flying stories Merlin and thanks!

I had the chance to work a little on a 9 cyl Gnome engine restoration when I was in college. The crank bolted to the airframe and the cylinders to the prop. Hit and miss ignition. I was invited back when it was done to watch them start it. AWESOME experience. Looking forward to you learning to read Polish and Russian. Best of luck - looking forward to following along.

Crazy how parallel lives are… I stopped in Buckeye, Arizona 30 years ago. There was a guy there that was once the commander at Guam, working on a cabin class Waco. I was on my way through in a helicopter. I stayed there all day on the ladder, helping him hang ailerons. Cool stop

You were breaking my heart with all those PLUMB tools, as that is my last name.
I do have some of the pieces you gave Steve and I actually use them.
I have a top box on a roll-a-way that holds nothing but PLUMB tools.
I am the 75 year old end of a family line.
I have no children to carry this branch of the Plumb tree forward, thus I know not what will happen to my collection when I am gone.
Oh Well, All good things must come to an end !

Find someone local to you, go to an engine shop, co-op, feed mill, tractor club or something. Ask if they know of any young people who are interested in mechanics and get in touch with them. I just purchased a bunch of tools from someone who passed away and no one in the family wanted his tools. I bought everything and now my son's have a lot of great tools, plumbs included. Hope you find someone who will appreciate them as much as us.

the starters on these ASh-62 they are all electric inertia starters which can be either wound up electrically or by a detachable crank handle to wind up the starter to spin the flywheel in the starter and the clutch in the starter is engaged to turn the engine over. there is videos of these engines running either the R-1820 and the ASh-62.

That asbestos pipe is called transite. I've been a ditch digger for 29 years and have never dug up a bad piece. Stuff will last forever. Really enjoy your videos. Keep up the awesome work

Man that is cool i always loved the old radial engines I know a guy who has on and he brings it to shows and fires it up he has it mounted to a trailer and it is so cool the sound that thing makes it always gives me goose bumps when he fire it up

My grandfather left me tools when he past, in those tools was a 3/8" to 11/32" adapter, I never knew what it was for, and did not know about the WW2 tool sizing, but he was a machinist and that would have been the time he was working in. Thanks for the video, it was great to watch.

The sound of a rotary engine running can't be matched. I worked for Arnold Kolb at Black Hills Aviation where he had restored two B17 to use a slurry bombers. He would fire those engines up in the hanger before he installed them on the planes and the sound and the feel as it fibrated deep in your chest was awesome.

I was a Snap-On Dealer in the mid 80s. A customer wanted to exchange a bunch of 5/8” and 7/8” drive tools for 1/2” and 3/4” drive.
I have a bunch of dad and grandpa tools,didn't know that is what that plumb emblem means, great video

That is awsome! Overall one of the best videos for me. I grew up in farm country just like Ports place. Setting siphon tubes and feeding cattle. Also when you pulled that 3/8 Plumb breaker bar out I got nostalgic. I won a lot of tools at the Friday night auction as a teengager that had one in it. I loved that it had the 3/8” square hole in the end of the handle so I could also use it as an extension.
So good I had to watch it twice!
I worked for Peirce Aviation back in the day (80's) and spent many a day in that old hangar. They had the Thrush crop dusters there and the Ag Cats were down in Roll. They did keep one Ag Cat in Buckeye if I remember right. I believe the pilots name was Fred and he was a really good pilot. I remember flagging for him when they were spraying L10 acid on the picked cotton fields that had a lot of bolls that hadn't popped. You didn't want to get that stuff on you. They had another pilot, Gil who liked to play poker which was a popular past time when we were waiting to go out. I ran mix trucks, water truck, flagged and ran flaggers a few times. I guess I was privileged once and drove Boyd around for a day. Lots of memories and good times from then. Steve looks familiar to me for some reason, just can't place it. When you get to my age some memories come easy and others you have to work at lol. Those pipes you were looking at actually were used when irrigating but they aren't siphon pipes. Instead of a row coming all the way up to a ditch the farmer would make like a small "lake" at the ditch and those pipes were placed at the back of the lake and would feed the rows. The pipes were placed about 6" up off of the ground on a dirt mound so the lake would form and the rows were fed evenly. Kinda hard to explain it right, easier to draw a picture of how it was done. I've lived in the Buckeye valley all my life, grew up in Palo Verde so I spent a lot of my younger years around farms. I know where that honey hole is lol...
Merlin the exhaust on that is going to be awesome. 😊 when I took tech classes in high-school it was Aircraft. Our school was at the time right up there with Spartan.

My dad had some Wright Field tools from his days in the Air Force in the early 50's. Another special size is 9/32 inch drive. I have them and use them regularly - they are timeless.
Merlin's level of cool is becoming the benchmark for everybody else's cool! I don't have a round engine anymore but I do have a straight Ranger that is destined to have 4 wheels.
I’ll have to go through my dads old tools. He had a number of big tools from his days as a tank mechanic during the Korean conflict days. The ratchets look like the ones you showed.
