  • ‪@MerlinsOldSchoolGarage‬, ‪@jetskijim007‬, Brad and Makay are hard at work on getting their VW engines running for Merlin's Birthday Bash Trip to Glamis Sand Dunes. Lucky for them one of the biggest Volkswagen part swap meets is happening right down the street. They are scoring jackpots of parts all over town, you won't believe how many engines Merlin ends up with!

45 years ago when I was a new up and coming teenage mechanic my neighbor brought me his VW engine in pieces in an old apple basket. He had all the rebuild parts and a VW shop manual and asked me to put his engine together for his VW and he would put it back in. I put it together and it was still running years later when he finally sold the Beetle. You have brought me back some good memories Merlin. I love watching you work on all the stuff that you do. You are always calm and collected and never get in a hurry or upset when things doesn't go right ( at least with the camera on). If you can resurrect the Yellow Submarine brother you can walk on water !! Now I'm an old retired guy but I can honestly say you have more than earned my admiration and respect !

Merlins videos never disappoint! I would thoroughly enjoy spending a week or 2 working in the garage with Merlin. So much to learn and I been turning wrenches since I was 10. Have never found anything I couldn't work on or fix. Merlin really impresses me with some the things he does and knows. Already learned so much just watching like the using acid to restore metal, all the Cummins knowledge, the model T & A knowledge, now Vw knowledge, and so much more. As a mechanic i love consuming all the mechanical knowledge I can from the old school guys with many years experience.

When I was working on aircraft I did the Lycoming and Continental air cooled opposed engines, radial engines some that the engine rotates around the crank, single to multiple row, turbine engines... So many designs, so much brilliance. What always stuck with me was the pressure carburetors that were aerobatic rated, they were right before fuel injection. They used fuel and atmospheric pressure, springs and diaphragms. It was really a mechanical throttle body injection system before t.b.i. It could work in any attitude, even upside down. Icing was the downfall which is why they went with fuel injection. The multi-row radials were the marvels of engineering. Get into the supercharged and turbocharged, super-turbocharged engines... Some really cool stuff.

Damn, Merlin! Are you trying to corner the market on VW Motors?
Hey, the 1st car I ever owned was a '62 VW bug bought from an old German, factory trained VW and Porsche mechanic. It cost all of $400 and was 100% original. That was around 1973 and I was 18 years old. (1st two years after getting my license, I made do with a motorcycle, which was fun in Colorado winters!)
Aside from some thin original paint here and there from polishing, that car looks great and was bulletproof! With studded snow tires I could plow snow off streets, climb trees and pull 4x4s out of snow banks. I drove it for 3 years and other than tires, brake shoes, oil, gas, extra wheels (for the snow tires) and a stereo I installed... the total cost of "repair" was 26 cents for a spring that broke in one of the rear brake assemblies. I even bought a 2nd bug... a '63 if I recall correctly... for my girlfriend at the time. Hers was green, mine was blue. Both had the vinyl cloth-like, folding sunroof. I hated to do it but sold it at a profit to buy a 1950 Chevy truck (was working construction at the time and really needed a pickup).

I really enjoyed watching Merlin teach Makay. How lucky to have such a great friendship. And the Volkswagen van event was a favorite part as well. I like the inertia that's growing on the sandrail builds. Seeing all the engines with their quirks gives such a comprehensive vantage point of how messed up they can be and what it might take to salvage an old VW engine.

  • @jimrky6062

Love seeing the VW engines. In '78 I did up a '67 engine for my Dad: case line reamed, 1600 jug set, mild cam, went over the heads, re-jetted the carb, straight header with cherry bombs - and also put a gasoline heater in the cabin. Now THAT car was loud (we could hear him coming from 4 streets away and it would rattle the picture window idling in the yard). It actually was faster after I cut the cherry bombs and put a stock muffler and tips on it. She'd do 40 in first and not breathe hard. That taught me about the glories of backpressure - and how necessary it is.
There are no VW parts left in Havasu - Merlin got'em all. 😎

The easiest way to line up the main brg dowls is to set the bearings in the case on the pins and lightly scribe the backside of the bearing at the split line. When the bearings are on the crank and ready to be installed, just set the crank in the case then line up the scribe lines, it should be extremely close to dropping over the dowls.

The bearing pin alignment trick is to put them in the case-half on their pins without the crank, and then mark the edge of the bearing where it meets the case half. A scratch awl is good for making a very slight line. Then do it again with the crank assembly in place. Your pins align when the bearing marks are in the right place. It takes a few seconds to get the bearings on their pins that way. Didn't see any assembly lube on those main bearings, but I assume you lubed them and the rod bearings.

Its a steep learning curve for those who think they know motors and find out they don't when they have to built a VW motor. One of my friends who built 1600cc motors for me used case savers and an8mm head stud set.. They are less likely to get a cylinder to barrel leak when they heat up. We also fly cut .040 thou out of the heads which brings the comp up to somewhere near 9.8 to one which is a safe max comp for longevity for a vw motor. I wish they'd come out of the factory with an oil filter. Ilove aircooled VW Motors. VW stopped making good cars when they started putting radiators in them. LOL

Cool video.I had a new 76 bus, drove from Oregon to NYC by way of Alabama. In 1983 started having problems with the fuel injection.Got a Weber kit from Empi .That really made a difference in performance. I had for another year then bought a Jeep.

Thanks for this great video. Reminds me of me and my brother rebuilding our VWs in the 70s on the garage floor in our rental in So Cal! Good times and lots of mistakes!

Yeah that first VW motor you showed does look real rough. You guy really go all in when you commit to building something that's for sure. Just keep getting more and more stuff to try and insure you have enough parts to at least get of them to run and work. Best of luck

Loved all of it. What a ride this one was. New subscriber after seeing it.
My first was a 62 and turned into a Baja, took it to a friends time share south of Ensenada for upholstery. That was 47 years ago. Had a dune buggy and boxes full of engine cases and parts that I sold prior to moving to the mountains. Fond VW memories, thanks for reviving them.
