Finally, a "normal" wardrobe! I see lots of colors I would wear. And great idea about the prints to tie the colored pieces together. 🙂

VERY informative! I was so tired of the neutrals everywhere capsule. It's pretty obvious that everything would match if I only own grey, black and white pieces, but I honestly feel drab and hate looking like it. Thanks so much for this reasonable approach.

I have a tip I wanted to add to this video. I have personally found a lot of success in my capsule wardrobes sticking to tones. Color theory goes a long way when trying to have a versatile capsule wardrobe. So my advice would be to design your wardrobe with all of your pieces staying in 1 group. Either "Tints", "Tones", "Shades" or "Pure Hues". The ROY G. BIV color pallet is endless that way and you can mix and match colors very successfully if they are lightened by white, softened with grey, enriched with black, or unaffected being a pure hue. Patterns are a HUGE success in my capsule wardrobe also because it helps connect my whole wardrobe. I love finding patterns in scarfs, kimonos, and blouses because they can connect my solid pieces and add that touch of detail I love so much. Hopefully this was helpful for anyone looking to build their colorful capsule wardrobe.

Lovely. So tired of those boring black wardrobes everyone is showing. I think it's easier to start with a couple of pieces in a print you really love, then get your solid colours from that. It's hard to start with assorted colours and then search for a print that has them.

    • @MyGreenCloset
      @MyGreenCloset  7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I think it really depends what you're starting with, and unless you're starting totally from scratch (which I don't at all recommend for a capsule wardrobe) I find most people already have many more solid colours than prints, so finding prints with those colours is great for being able to wear the pieces you already have and like wearing. I think especially if you're new to capsule wardrobes you should try to buy as few new pieces as possible, because you'll learn a lot and get much better sense of what works for you going forward.
It can be hard to find prints but there are also very multi-coloured prints especially with things like florals!

Wow, I was just wondering if I've been doing the wrong thing w/ my wardrobe. I've always have dark colored jeans, black & khaki pants w/ colorful tops along w/ print dresses. Sometimes I wonder if I'm normal for only owning 2 pairs of heels (black & tan), 1 pair of sneakers for gym until they fall apart (literally) and 1 pair of dress sandals for casual places like malls, supermarket and 1 pair of flip flop for home. I always wonder how people can own so many pairs of shoes when I only buy the pairs I'd wear on daily basis. Thank you for "validating" that I've been embracing a minimalistic wardrobe and that make me feel somewhat "normal".

Love this! Most of the capsule wardrobes feels so plain to me with all of those neutrals, black and whites. I LOVE color and patterns so it was really nice to see a video with examples that work so well and contain tons of color and prints

This is the most thorough and practicable video on this topic that I have come across, and being a color fiend, I have been watching every one I can find for more than a year, now. I love that you present everything in ways that are easy to put into practice, that you offer multiple examples and contrasting approaches, and that you consider both sides of where a person might be coming from (adding color into a capsule plan, versus being colorful already but new to capsules). I am so happy to have this video as a shareable resource. I cannot thank you enough.

Thank you! I love colors and patterns, so I've been feeling like a capsule wardrobe wouldn't work for me, even though I'm trying to make one. I will definitely have your advice in mind when I'm moving and taking only the essential pieces. I'm planning to add more navy blue to my clothing because I know I look very good in it, and I also love yellows and oranges that would go well with it 💛 You encouraged me to think more of the colors I wear.

Really great video! I started out with a very neutral capsule wardrobe, and have been adding more and more colour over the years. WOnderful ideas and very like my wardrobe! I am a warm blonde, wram skin, warm eyes and look terrible in black esp near my face. Black & white wardrobes are also SO boring! My neutrals after years of experimentation are warm browns, camel, and navy I mix these with warm tops and bottoms...reds, oranges, corals and a warm pink just as you show. I look for prints that tie the colors together so I have some pattern. The heaviest clothing I need where I live are suede and leather jackets which I have in brown, burgundy, cognac and camel.I have these in blazers as well as casual jackets. I focus on the same colors in shoes and boots. WHen I really need some pattern to tie things together I also use silk scarves. This took me nearly five years to build this wardrobe and I tossed everything boring and grey or black out except one black dress which I always wear my colors with to warm it up. A navy basic dress is my usual go to for formal or business situations.Thank you SO much for a colorful basic wardrobe I hope women struggling with wearing black or grey that do not suit them see your video...it explains just how to do it!

Thank you for solving my biggest doubt of capsule wardrobe. I thought I have to stay netural and it just would not reflect my personality. But now I learned from you, keep the layering pieces, shoes and accessories neutral, then I can mix in a bunch of colors! Thank you!

Miss Minimalist taught me to choose neutrals or colors that go together, so you can dress in the dark and still look put together. It helps one not have to buy one of every color shoe or belt, or a blazer in black and grey and brown and navy.
So for example, for neutrals you'd go with either black/grey/white or browns or navy blue. You can also use dark colors (purple, forest green, even a consistent shade of red) as a neutral.
For pop colors you go with color families. Brown neutrals go well with red, olive green, mustard, forest green. (Mentally check how they would look together: red/olive, red/mustard, red/forest, olive/mustard, olive/forest, mustard/forest - that all works together).
Navy blue neutrals go with lemon yellow, aqua/teal, pink, kelly green. (Check: lemon/aqua, lemon/teal, lemon/pink, lemon/kelly, aqua/pink, aqua/kelly, pink/kelly - yup that works)
Navy and white neutrals go with lemon yellow or kelly green pops (and kelly/lemon go together), OR with red and aqua (but not all of those pop colors together: red / lemon yellow looks like Ronald McDonals and red / kelly green looks like Christmas).
Me personally, though, my neutrals have become what once were my "pop" colors. Kelly green, teal, purple, or lemon yellow dresses or blazers are my base pieces, and I accessorize from there. If I wear trousers, those tend to be in dark colors, but that's pretty much only activewear. (Note: purple and lemon yellow don't go together, but I love both so bend that dress-in-the-dark guideline)

Thank you so soooo much!!😍💞 That print idea to tie all the colors is genius! I had no idea how to make my summer pieces work together and I didn't want to buy a lot and replace my current clothes. Now I only have to buy a nice printed fabric and sew a skirt or maybe a white fabric and paint it myself. You saved my wardrobe, thank you again ❤❤❤

I dont have a casule wardrobe per se, but everything fits together as I definitely have colours assigned to certain categories. The colours in the category suits similar colours as well. Since i dont shop online I can always tell if an item is going to look good as I always wear the same colours. If it doesnt look good with what I'm wearing today it wont look good with anything else i own. It is however tricky if and when my taste in colour changes. I really love every type of green and I'm trying to incorporate deep turqoise and/or mint.
I think this video will come in handy. Thank you for making it!

After about three seasons I finally figured out how to build my capsule around my personal style. I wish I had seen this video earlier. Every bottom I own is printed and all but one are skirts. I adore stripes, polka dots, plaids and florals in various textures and styles. In the cooler seasons, I throw on tights and boots. My biggest challenge were tops. I finally realized I was re-wearing the same three shirts, 2 solid black and 1 solid navy. I've since added a couple more. One cooler days I pair skirts and tops with either a long asymmetrical black cardigan or a knitted navy cardigan. My shoes are black and brown. Understanding my personal style has really helped me narrow down my wardrobe. I have fewer items, but I love every one. I feel confident and comfortable in everything I own. I can take items from casual to dressy. It's basically my uniform: patterned skirt, basic top, cardigan.

Awesome tips Erin 😊 I follow a lot of these guidelines for my capsule as mine is definitely very colorful (in the spring and summer at least!) most of my colourful and patterned pieces are dresses or tops and I keep the other pieces more on the neutral side! So glad to see a video talking about a colourful capsule! Xx

Great video. My tip for people who love colors that don't necessarily go together is to separate your colors by seasons. I do have a lot of great neutrals that work well year round but I bring out a different set of colorful pieces each season. Not all of the colors have to work together and it helps keep my wardrobe feeling fresh and new because every three months, I add in new pieces I haven't worn in a while with no shopping required. If anyone is interested, I do share my more colorful capsule wardrobes on my channel.

Thank you so much for this, I've been struggling as though I don't wear a lot of colour the two colours I wear are red and green so just never go together. This has helped with my feelings of having to choose as I've always felt like I can't capsule as there are some things that don't go together. I'm going to be more relaxed and while my red jacket may never work with everything it's alright.

I love these combinations! They look a lot less boring than the "standard" neutral ones. But how do you do your laundry with capsule wardrobes like these? Clothes look good for much longer when you only wash similar colors together. With my rather large wardrobe I have no problem collecting dirty laundry until I have enough of one color for a full load, but how would you do that when you only have one or two items of each color?

I do have several different colored tops, but I did stop buying patterns when I switched to a capsule wardrobe. I found that a lot of them were just trendy, and wouldn't be in style very long. The only patterned piece I have now is a navy blue shirt with white daisies and cherries on it. It was my mother's, and whenever I wear it, I get so many comments on it! Lol.

The patterned jacket and skirt is totally doable with a plain top or even the striped top. I love mixing prints it jazz things up it is an art though lol

This is so helpful! What program did you use to lay out all of the pieces in these images? I would like to do something like this to help me plan my capsule.

Thanks! I used photoshop but you can use any program where you can bring in multiple images.

I'm definitely guilty of owning a burgundy tshirt, pair of pants and pair of boots and I've absolutely worn them all together once. In my defence, they're all my favorite. But it won't happen again, I promise.

Do it again! Monochromatic can look absolutely amazing and if you love it, wear it!

Okay WHERE is that mustard coloured dress from in the 3rd slide?! It is absolutely gorgeous, I've been looking for one just like it.

I don't know where that exact dress is from, but I'd recommend trying Reformation or Christy Dawn. They both carry similar styles of dresses :)
