Ottilie Patterson & Lonnie Donegan sing "When I Move to the Sky". Since Lonnie introduces Ottilie, I assume it's from a TV show of his. Anyone know any more?
Very moving! Lonnie and ottillie great combination. Lonnie can sing anything and it's all great! He really is the guvner! Lonnie is a one off, they will never be another!
That's a great family connection. Even a couple of years ago, I saw Chris talking about her with tears in his eyes. She was a wonderful and very underrated singer, and obviously very loved.
I remember receiving a clip round the ear in about 1956/7 (?) because I was making a noise whilst my father was trying to listen to Ottilie Patterson.... he was a 1920s and 300s Jazz fiend and rated her along with many of his favourites.... I can really understand why
Thanks for sharing. I had never seen Lonnie Donegan before. From reading Stones and Beatles biographies, it seems that Lonnie Donegan was a large early influence on the British rockers.
Do you know how some songs just make one's smile go from ear to ear? This is one of those.. Thank you so much for posting. This is the first time I've heard Ottile Patterson and Lonnie Donegan. Oh the hidden treasures of You Tube!
CRIKEY!THIS IS LIKE FINDING A GOLD NUGGET...FANTASTIC STUFF,DIDNT SHE HAS SUCH CLEAR DICTION AND MADE IT LOOK SO EASY,A NATURAL.I HOPE SHE IS STILL WITH US.NICE TO SEE HER SINGING WITH LONNIE.10 OUT 10 STARS FOR THIS.
Thanks a million. Pure magic by both - this sort of thing is what REALLY inspired the British beat boom and folk revival. Let's hope us plebs will be able to see it and all the other treasures in the archive properly one day. Saw Lonnie, would you believe, as Buttons in "Cinderella" at the Nottingham Theatre Royal when? about 1959? Then saw him a few years ago at Cropredy, a couple of months before he died. What a great man.
I too used to go to the Shakepeare on a Sunday night, a bit later than you. in the early sixties. There was George Webb always on the door ready to greet everyone. He was a nice guy. I do remember Chris Barber playing there but Ottilie was never at any of the sessions I attended. Monty Sunshine used to come over to our little group in the interval to tell and collect the latest dirty jokes. He loved 'em.
I saw Ottilie when she was with the Barber Band, singing at the Lewisham Town Hall, Catford, London, SE6, in the late '50s. Great night! Ken from Gata de Gorgos
Well, before i'd heard this woman sing this i must admit i'd never even heard her name, and oh my good god what a great voice, i've alwauys liked Lonnie and the two of them are well matched, this is just gr8.
I was at the variety show in Newtownards the night Ottilie won the talent contest. She sang Frankie & Johnny & won getting the most applause. This was her big first step to getting together with Chris Barber I believe. Ottilie lived on the Comber Road in Newtownards, County Down, Northern Ireland.
Chris, I hope you heard from 23squirrel23 - fantastic reconnection. Your - and Ottilie's - music has been an inspiration from my father to me and now to my kids. Many thanks and very best wishes.
@23squirrel23 Hi, Your great aunt is quite a character , a great singer. I've picked up some rare records of hers, a Pye lp where she invited Irish musicians to play some traditional songs & a record of her song where has poor Mickey gone from the film of the same name circa 64 + the film on DVD. I wish i knew how to download the song onto You tube , it needs to be made public, great blues song with Sonny Boy Williams on harmonica, Any tips on how to put it on you tube ?

Not bad?? How about brilliant, pure and sweet
вокал сложный очевидно чтоб оценить надо быть в теме (знать язык)
Pretty bland, compared to Lottie Peaway's 1944 recording of this song, including Bunk Johnson.
They have now both moved to the sky. Two of Britain's Jazz Greats.
