    This song is so untypical of the usual style of Lonnie songs, but he nails it. The very best version of this song I've heard. Legend.

    This song among others are the songs that no one else but Lonnie could have given to us. He shaped my musical life in the 50's.

    Lonnie was absolutely brilliant and a real character.. :)

    Its the way a song is sung that makes all the difference! Lonnie's style was so full of feeling and he always rose to a climax at the end. The intro was always the soft strum of the guitar, and then the song developed. Great stuff. I met Dickie Bishop in Greek street skiffle cellar in the 1950's who played with Lonnie. Classic. Lonnie was so under-rated in later life yet without Lonnie there may well have been no Beatles, such was his influence back in the day.

      "Codswallop" meaning Lonnie was under rated in later life, or that he was a major influence on such as The Beatles?
      The Beatles reference is a fact. Go ask Paul McCartney...

    incredible cut. John Lennon did this, on one of his first demos, and it wrenched me in the gut, but this version is the first to make me cry while watching it, and I am 72 yrs. I've listened to allot of artist, but none has made me cry. Thank you for the post.

    After listening to all the versions of this song....IMHO, Lonnie Donegans version is the best. There is more "feeling" in the way he sings it.
    Everyone to their own tho' isn't it?

    • @lazoputz3514
      @lazoputz3514 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed, Neville. But I believe the first version you hear of a song always remains in your mind as the "best" or "favourite". For me, it's Hank Snow.

      @cotswoldcuckoo775 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Each to their own, but I like the Travelling Wilburys' version, although that is about the only one of "theirs" that I do like. Lonnie was a great musician and showman.

    • @stevev4255
      @stevev4255 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To my mind Lonnie was the most influential performer of the 20th century. He influenced all the first wave of rock guitarists: Page, Clapton, Harrison, Beck. Rock as we know it wouldn't have existed without him.

    Wow! Fabulous. This song and Bobby Darin's Artificial Flowers must be the saddest songs every recorded. Artificial Flowers was so sad that a lot of radio stations banned it back in 1960. These songs remind me of what's important in life - caring for one another. Thanks for upload this - it is the first time I've heard it. Ed
