So I have had conversations with this guy when he was living in American Samoa. At one point in his life he was, I believe homeless in Utah, and the tongans around the area took him in, which is how he learned Tongan, that, and because they’re are heaps of Tongans in American Samoa to practice with. I don’t quite remember how he ended up in AS, but I met him through a mutual friend from the village of Leone. I am super surprised and grateful to see him on TH-cam of all places! Glad that he’s doing well!
He was a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which is how he picked up the language in the first place, now he's the famous palagi boy that's as close to Samoan as you can get without being Samoan 😂

Growing up in Pago there's a grip of Tongans, Fijians, Filippinos, Koreans, Chinese, German, Palagis. A few Indian, Afro American, Italian, Portuguese, Mexicans and Arabs. All their kids grow up embracing both cultures like palagi boy, they speak Samoan or both languages fluently. The biggest Filippino I ever seen was back on the Rock. The uso was built like the Hulk. The afakasi girls were all hella fine.

I spent two years in New Zealand in the early 80s and have been in the Otara Markets many times. I never learned more than just the basic greetings in the various island languages, but the culture of Polynesia got deep into my heart and has stayed all these decades later. I still do anything I can to associate with the wonderful Polynesian people.
