I love that you have identified the six variables that allow us to mimick other voices. It seems like the right kind of abstraction to help the pedagogy of singing in general.
Watching this as someone born with a cleft lip and palate who had really bad speech therapists growing up who couldn't properly explain how to do certain speech sounds. I was curious about how to control my vocal nasality and I understood this in seconds. Thanks a ton
The easiest way to feel your soft pallte when it closed is by smelling some coffee or any other fragrance. If you can still smell the coffee, it means that your soft pallatte still lowered, but if you unable to smell that coffee smell again, then you are successfully closed your soft pallate
Im a singer and voice teachers always have preached to me to “Raise the soft palate!” But they could never explain what the soft palate is, it’s purpose, and how to gain control of it. Thank you for taking a scientific approach to this and sharing your knowledge.
We're sorry no one had the answers for you before @sam allen, but we're glad we could help! Anatomy for singers is so important, make sure you find good voice teachers who teach using anatomy and know what they're talking about. Our group of voice teachers at New York Vocal Coaching are very skilled and knowledgeable, try checking them out (newyorkvocalcoaching.com/services/voice-lessons)! -NYVC
Thank you! I have had problems with my soft palate uncontrollably and painfully flexing while I sang Even worse I couldn't find this problem addressed in other singing lessons. Eventually my solution to relax my soft palate was to open my mouth more and do more warm-up/scale exercises. But these exercises are better. Now I will be able to consciously move my soft palate, and hopefully avoid pain.
a nice trick I found by myself when I was learning without any videos is to try and breathe in and out with your mouth closed. if you can't, you know your soft pallet is 100 percent closed.
I have a little trick that is working for me So I do the motion of the sound “NG” and I imagine saying it but really no noise is coming out Do the same with “AH” I figured this out when my sister said “when you talk in your mind your vocal cords still move” and it’s the same with all the exercises
Most profesional videos. Thank you so much. I watch all your videos about voice control. Finaly someone explains me it all so I understand and also giving me excercises. This channel is so great!

Along with teacher Jason, and now seeing this, you have helped in my understanding of what your teaching. Because...I had no idea what you meant my raising the sft Pallet or not...Thanks and I will look at this a few times more.. I like the idea of your teaching on a detailed focus of a small piece of the whole...also....I always worked with Pallets on the receiving doc..lol thx again..
I was watching this video for 3 1/2 minutes, and then left for a while and never came back. LOL. It's now 11:14 PM. I'll come back to this in the morning.
Been trying to learn how to sound less nasal bc my friends say my voice sounds a lil bit like a nerdy voice, atleast i pin pointed what i need to work on
Those vibration tickle my nose so bad😂 I haven't looked into all your videos, but do you have any video where you demonstrate how the vocal placement impacts the sound of your voice? I'm struggling with opening "the back of my throat". And what would make it more challenging, is going high and low in pitch in that circumstance.
I can easily feel the back of my tongue move up towards or lowering away from the soft pallette, but having a hard time feeling the soft palette movement...
I came here only to learn that I already knew how to do this.. but, I actually gained something even more valuable, you can say that I came looking for gold yet I struck diamonds. You might be asking, what did I gain? Well, obviously knowledge, but by knowledge I mean... What the bump in between the back of my teeth are, because I was really confused about that since I didn't notice I had that until a while ago and I didn't even know what it was so it was just weird. 1:34
That moment when you realize that you stopped lifting your soft pallet because you though it was bad form😂😂 Really wish I had an actual vocal coach growing up
How much time would you recommend spending on each component? I'm watching all four of em back to back and repeating the shown exercises for 2 minute each as an everyday morning routine. Is that enough for real results or should I increase the time
Brendan suggests that the amount of time necessary will be different for everybody. It is great that you are doing regular daily practice, as consistency is the most important part! If you find you are not seeing results, experiment with increasing the time. Keep us posted on your progress @Kinda Catchy! -NYVC

What I still don't understand is the difference between lowering your tongue and raising your soft palate. Can the channel do a video on allergies? My dust allergies make it extremely difficult to have a reliable singing voice. Not only is it more unreliable, it tires the throat quickly and physically clogs up around passagio areas. Sometimes my throat gets sore, damages easily, and audibly cuts out notes because of the “gunk” in the back of the throat. Thanks.
