80S Land Cruiser Fuel tank Pressure

- Do you have a hissing sound when removing the gas cap on your 80S Land Cruiser? How about a longer than normal start up? This can be pressure or vacuum on the tank due to no venting. The venting on these trucks is through a Charcoal Canister inside the engine bay and when it gets old and clogged, the tank can't vent properly. Check this out where I change the ~$250 Toyota Canister out for a late model Pontiac canister that is almost a direct fit replacement. I ordered part # VC120 (Duralast/Vapor Canister - $35.99) from Autozone.com and it arrived in a few days via UPS. Hope this helps someone out.

Thanks for watching guys, Clay
Great video! 7 years later and you saved me crap ton of time and money! Well done sir!
BA Reich - Nice! Glad to help man! Mine is still fine as well.
Thank you! Thank You! I've been scratching my head on where to start diagnosing my emission fault code. I've had the same issue with pressure or suction ever time i fill up the tank. I'm passed due for NYS inspection. Every time I clear the engine code, it pops right back up after i fill up.
Thanks for the quick, yet informative video!
Alright! Glad you were able to get on this and fix it. Comment back and let us all know if this fixed the check engine light/code. Take Care, Clay
That magical world of charcoal canisters. Often misunderstood little devices.
Late to the party but very helpful for replacing my 94 canister. Thank you.
Glad it helped John! Thank you for letting me know.
Your videos are REAl great! I am a new '93 owner and can't thank you enough
Thanks for the tip! Can’t wait to eliminate that same problem on my 96.
Can you delete the charcoal canister ?
Probably, but be careful as you need to vent the tank and the gasses are flammable. Also, I think you may get a check engine light if you get into the vent valve or change any of the EVap operations. Proceed with caution.

Thanks for your quick response, I think you are on point. The question is why would anyone turn a 4x4 into a rear wheel drive? The PO has castrated my LC! Rear wheel drive makes that truck spin out in the snow, which is quite embarrassing for an LC so I need to get it fixed. Are there hubs, which allow you to engage four wheel or two wheel drive with the flick of switch instead of having full-time 4x4? Going with your scenario what are the parts that I would need to bring this 4x4 back to life? Thanks a mil.my friend.
Hi, I have a 2000 LC100 with a 1fz-fe engine and have the same problem as you. I changed the charcoal canister and replaced with an OEM. I still have the pressure and swoosh every time I open the fuel tank. It’s eating my head I don’t know what the problem could be. Please help!
It may be a bad purge/vent valve. Check to see if the vent valve is working by jumping voltage to it and listening to see if it clicks open.
Clay
Thanks a lot for taking time out of your busy work & personal life to answer my questions & those of many other LC owners. It goes without saying, many thanks also to your crew, especially your son Connor for the great video footage. I think he would have a great career in motion pictures industry. I would love to see a demo on front seat removal, the leather on mine are badly cracked & the driver's seat front seat spindle ha snapped. So I need to remove the seats for repair. I'll keep looking at your videos & will recommend my friends to subscribe to channel, if it helps you out. Keep 'em coming my friend.
Thanks Rupert. I'll pass this on to Conner - he'll appreciate that compliment. I have raw footage of the seat removal and will try to get that published soon for you. Not hard at all but there are a few tricks that help.
Clay
You are a genius man! I like your style, you are very thorough. I have the same vehicle as yours, a 96 Landcruiser with 185k miles. One of the problems that have been bugging me is my 4x4 system is not functioning. the previous owner took off the front half shaft and when I went to reattach it the connecting rod on the pumpkin is spinning freely, not locked into place with the axle rods. I cannot get in touch with the previous owner to ascertain the problem, so I have to figure it on my own. I really want to go off-roading and would great appreciate all of your troubleshooting advice. I will look out for your post. Thanks.
+Rupert Gaznabbi - It sounds like the PO tried to make it 2 wheel drive and changed the drive plates (on the outside of the front hubs) to smooth ones on the inside (no splines) so that the wheels can spin free without engaging the front diff gears. There are some guys who even put the manual locking hubs on these vehicles to accomplish the same thing. You will need to get all those parts back to original to get your 4 wheel drive back in shape.
Yes, you can get Manual locking hubs. The PO was trying to get better mileage I'm sure and was probably in a location where he/she didn't have tons of snow to deal with and was just burning the pavement everyday. I suggest a search on the forum "ih8mud.com" to get lots of info on getting it back up to snuff. Those guys help tons of folks, including myself, all the time. Good group. Tell them I referred you. C
thank you kind sir for your Texas know how! I'm doing my vc120 today & also did the cdl switch after watching that video. thanks for the info. Its one thing to read it on mud, another to watch it. ☺👍 thanks again
Thanks. Picked one up today. 👍🏽
I noticed the same thing on my new to me 97, I ordered the Duralast Canister to swap out. Its a once every 10 years kinda part but I've heard it helps with gas mileage as well. I've had the slow starting as well. Looking forward to doing this mod.
Clay, how r u? You did a lift on your LC I'm doing a 2" lift on mine. Will I need caster correction bushings with a 2" lift or can stick with the original? Thanks.
I’m doing well Jonathan. I think my lift was closer to 3” and I needed the correction. Try driving afterwards and see how it steers. It will feel wonky if the caster has been too much removed. Won’t return to center very well. If so, with just a 2” lift you can probably get by with caster corrective bushings vs the full plates. Hope this helps. Keep me posted. Take care, Clay
Question. Does your cruiser start the fuel pump when you turn the key to on? I.e. Run for a couple of seconds and. Cut off. My 96 does not do that but was told by a local mechanic that it should. Fuel pump runs fine when you start the vehicle. Bi have the factory manual but it does not mention anything about this
Paul, my understanding is that this is not the way it works. Mine does not turn on and pump up with the key turned on only. My understanding is that the ECU waits for air movement over the MAF sensor (in the intake plenum) and then starts the fuel pump. This is a safety "feature" so if your engine dies and your key is on, you won't continue to pump fuel (as in an accident situation). I think you can apply a jumper somewhere on the fusebox or one of the relays to get it to run if you need to diagnose a problem. Check for a few threads on this on i8mud.com forum.
Very helpful. I plan on doing this swap on my '95 LC. Thanks.
So you just wire tied the bottom bracket out of the way? You didn’t plug it or anything?
Which bracket are you referring to? there was a vent house on the bottom that I left un-connected due to the new charcoal canister didn't have that connection.
Good to hear. If your vehicle runs lean it will run hotter, so you may be right about the AC. Everything under that hood has some effect on the AC. Clay
Before you replaced the canister, did you notice if there was a foul odor from the exhaust?
Dexter Miranda - no, didn’t notice any smells. My be your catalytic converters.
Thanks a lot for the info, do have any advice on where to go to get the best px for these parts?
+Rupert Gaznabbi www.ih8mud.com will be the best place to start. Ask the same questions there and everyone will jump in to help! Also the parts counter at any Toyota Dealership can show the exploded view of the front axles. They can quote you all the parts and prices, then you can shop around for the best prices are just go with them. I always ask if they can help me out with a discount and most of the time they will help out cost wise. Hope this helps, that Land Cruiser needs it 4-wheel drive back!
I have heard some crazy stories about faulty fuel cap can make with LC 120 Prado going all lights on like Brake system, AbS, VRC, TRC...
I have just changed my front left abs sensor and lights were still on means ABS was still faulty. Then I found out that one hose on the top of carbon vacum fuel filter was not mounted. I fitted it back and then went to close one more time filler cap on a tank and all lights were suddenly off...🧐 It is pretty crazy with Toyota electrical system to be honest...
I wonder if it was just a coincidence- maybe one more start cycle to reset it after the vacuum hose was reattached…???
Hey Clay this is just an FYI. I found out that the rear sway bar off of a 1990 f150 will bolt on to the f100 rear axle. Cost me $25.00!
joe newman - Hey Joe. Thanks for that info. Just to be clear, you are referring to adding the sway bar to the original ‘67 F100 9” rearend, right? I swapped in a 8.8” from a 2000 Explorer in my ‘67 F100 and it came with a sway bar.

I have the same issue with my LC gas tank so I would like to replace my canister. the dealer was quotingme a px more than I can spend (have to save some money for those new Birfield.) I looked around but couldn't find anything new like the one you got. Can you tell me where you got yours and the px? I figure quicker starts can save my starter. Also, I did some research on the Birfield`s and some people recommended the 30-spline rods from Nitro over the stock rods. It's better for off-roading & bigger tires, etc. What are your thoughts on this matter? Have you ever replaced yours/are yours stock or aftermarket? Thanks.
+Rupert Gaznabbi Found it on the AutoZone website just now. Just search for VC120 Duralast. I have not done my Birfs yet so I don't have a lot of Texasknowhow on them... haha. Sorry. I would definitely hit up ih8mud site for all the details... someone has done everything you need to know. Take care Rupert.
Nice vid. Very well done, Clay! Where and what part did you source?
+DCornelius See below, got it on Amazon. For a pontiac I believe... been a while on this one.. haha
Thanks for the video, this helped alot with my 97 LC. Seems like the AC is running better too!
Clay
I forgot to ask but in your video you detached the hose at bottom but did you reattach it to the new one, as you mentioned other guys do? If you left it off do you need to plug the end or can you leave it like that with no consequence to the engine? Thanks again.
+Rupert Gaznabbi - no consequence to leaving that bottom hose un-connected Rupert. It is the fresh air feed to the old OEM canister. The replacement canister is fed fresh air via the bottom edge vent which is a different way to get air. So I just plugged my hose on that end to keep insects out. If I go back to OEM canister I will unplug it and connect.
Hey texasknowhow, how is the vc120 working for you? Is it still working for you? I need to do this too, because everytime i open my gas cap, it sucks in a BUNCH!
Still doing great, no issues at all. Yeah, you need to do this fix. Take care, Clay
Question: I had this long hissing - kind of scared me every time I opened the gas cap, and I could fill the gas all the way up 21 gallons, but then all of a sudden I noticed a leak coming from the top of my gas tank somewhere - no more hissing, but now I am leaking gas everytime I fill up my tank over 18 gallons - any ideas what might be happening?
G2G Equipment - it sounds Like the vent tube blew off the top of the tank. You have the same problem I have in this video and need to fix that. But you’ll also have to fix the vent line at the tank as well.
I have the exact thing happen. I already changed the charcoal canister. Is it easy to easy to fix the leak on the gas tank?
MARK R. BENEDICTO - I’ve not done that repair to date, but hopefully you can access those hoses from underneath or via the door under the back/rear left side seat. That is where you pull/replace the fuel pump.
hello. I have to check mine, as I also have the same problem. using the less expensive canister as a test is a good idea, but what about the extra vacuum line on the bottom of the canister? Is this line necessary, and can it do any harm leaving it detached and open? thanks.
I still have my less expensive unit in the truck and no, it won't hurt to leave this line open as the cheaper canister get's it's air from around the bottom of the unit not through a feed tube. The tube itself just goes to a location down inside the frame, so no harm. I would put some tape over the end of the tube to keep bugs out.
Texasknowhow Thanks. yeah, I put the cheap canister in my truck also, with good results. The function seems fine, just not as well made. I'll probably keep it until I can find a better deal on an OEM canister. good tip though; without your video, I would not have found the problem.
What kind of gloves are those and where can they be obtained? My mechanic gloves are a bit to thick and lose dexterity.
Good Question - The gloves I use are Nitrile Examination Gloves. I work in an Engineering environment most of the day and sadly people would judge me if I had grease impregnated in my fingers and nails… and I just like the easy clean up after doing work on my vehicles, ATVs and firearms. I am currently very happy with one you see in this video - can get directly from a O'Reilly's Auto Parts store (Raven brand) where I got a box of 100 for about $15 if I recall correctly or from Amazon - www.amazon.com/Advance-Nitrile-Examination-Gloves-Diamond/dp/B00BC14L5Q/ref=pd_bia_nav_t_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=18E2WKD4DFF7H2FEXVCX - for about $13 for box of 100.
What kind of Canister is that...model#? Thanks and nice video...!
Did you have a strong fuel smell before switching the canister?
No, not really. Just pressure in my tank that expelled like hissing air when I removed the gas cap. My canister system was basically stopped up.
Well, I have the hissing, too, and if I pull the fuel tank line off the canister it even drives like a new cruiser. The skinny pedal feels a little more responsive. I hope I can find one of the canisters you used. Thanks.
Hello. you'd have the model from which you are adapting or the number of part or of that vehicle. Thanks friend
Autozone VC120
great job....
i have 97 lc.. but the problem is fuel tank orange light is always on and auxiliary tank not work. if i push sub tank switch green light on for 1 sec. plz help me bro
+Dv Danger I don't have the Aux tank option and that adds some complexity to the gauge and signal light. I would take it one step at a time and start debugging the Main tank's wiring and the fuel depth sensor on that one. If when it's NOT empty the light is on, there is a problem in that circuit or sensor. Fix that and the other stuff will fall in place.
i have done.
How are you man!
Really appreciate your videos. Just did this on my 93'.
Any updates on it? Still running good?
I will let you know how it worked. Thank you again!
Keep them comming!
+MANUEL RODRIGUEZ V - Doing great Manuel! Glad it was helpful; should hold you over for quite a while. Mine is doing fine, no back pressure on the tank at fillups. I'm hard at work making more videos and plan to get one per week out if possible. Thanks again for the comment and for the kind words. Clay
+Texasknowhow you have no idea how many people gets help because of this videos. Make everything looks easy for daily improvements in the car that you will never think of. Keep them coming man! You help a LOT OF PEOPLE! Including me.
Thank you for commenting here, I also have a 93 and wanted to see if this same CC, which I just ordered tonight from AutoZone, would work for my TLC. Also, @Texasknowhow - thank you for making this video sir! Fellow Texan here, stuck in Ca. Not a great time here right now, but there are 4x4 trails to get your mind off the shenanigans. ;-)
Did you ever put a factory Toyota canister back in.
+Topeka Kansas Nope, still have the inexpensive one in there. Doing real good.
That sounds like the evap. Swoosh is good, means no vaccum leaks.
Will that cause any checkengine lights on
Anything wrong with the Evap system can indeed cause CEL. Changing this canister did not cause a CEL.
Thanks for the informative video, although o must ask why on Earth your County would NOT have strict regulations for smog? That’s just stupid.
Larry Queen - Yeah it’s crazy but most rural counties don’t check emissions just do a safety inspection.
Texasknowhow dang, that blows. Every little thing helps. Great video, though! Happy New Year!
Larry Queen not stupid, smog test is a joke. Smog test should be banned.
Edgar Bravo right. Because smog is good! Sounds like the smog test isn’t really the joke here.
nice video thank you.
See the comments for the video... VC120. Thanks for watching and hope it helps!, Clay
