My horse is the sweetest pony I've ever met, but she would flunk this test instantly. She spooks, bucks, shies, bites, kicks, and has a hot temper once you're on her back. I wouldn't give her up for anything, though.
Police horses in Hamilton, ONT. (nearest city to where I live) are all Percheron or Percheron mix. Over eighteen hands, elegant in solid black and totally confident. So impressive!

Horses are incredibly intelligent, they are such amazing creatures, and the trust between horse and rider can really create a strong bond. Same with dogs! Bad connection and you are just asking for trouble.
This is the view from someone who rides basically only western and just sometimes rides with a English saddle,I need to say the riders dont seem all too experienced, but they seem to be riding western style,western saddle and headstall and bit,alot of western bits look like that, because they are trained to be bridle horses when they are trained right , in case of Western they are trained advanced enough to use a higher lever solid shank kerb bits, and you barely move the reins and the horses reacts and when you need to actually do more then move the reins you give a very soft slight pull, horses that ride with kerbs and higher level western bits are extremely sensitive in the mouth, and western you dont control the horse with your reins and the bit, its all in your seat and body, if a horse and rider is trained enough you could ride a horse only with the saddle, no bitless bridle nothing, there are videos of people in reining competitions and headstalls breaking, and also know western you ride loose, slack reins, your not clamping the horse, compared to most English riders I see are extremely hard in the mouth and reins, and also you can see most of them are in western saddles and headstalls so they are probably using some western bit and honestly if you progress through the different stages of bits the right way you'll never hurt a horse's mouth.
Tiggy Blackwell, I agree. At least uses snaffle bit with a rubber Center, It will cause some pain but not as much as a curved bit. Although I much rather see no bit.
Imagine you’re in the middle of a riot and you’re on a massive horse and you need to HAUL ASS in the opposite direction. You’re gonna want every single bit of control over every single ounce of that horse. It’s better to have spurs and not use them and a big bit and hardly use it, then need it and not have it.

Meade Music the horses behaviour depends on what you are doing. If you do something wrong then your horse might end up doing something wrong. When I fall off I think “it’s not the horses fault, it’s my fault.”
no the bits are clearly way to harsh I ride and have been riding for 4 years no I'm not an expert and yes I ride with a harsher bit but never as harsh as the ones they are using if there horses are so well trained they shouldn't need that harsh of a bit period

@@Kat-mu8wq well the horse I was riding at the time was very hard mouthed. It wasn’t even a very harsh but I was using and I often rode him with no tack including no bridle but at shows he would become especially headstrong. He would run nonstop and completely quick listening if he had anything lighter in. I would use an extremely light hand on him which I think is the biggest thing. You can have a light bit but if you have a heavy hand it can be just as bad as a heavy bit and a light hand.

Watching this for me is like watching the arts & crafts segment of Blue Peter & wishing you could just have the one the presenter made rather than having to find the materials & time to make your own. Other comments: I've noticed a lot of people have been talking about bits. I know how to ride a horse only insofar as I've read Horseback Riding for Dummies, not from practical experience, so I feel unqualified to comment on bits, but all mounted constables I've seen have a very light touch & aren't seen to move at all in communicating with the horse. I can't see how a harsh bit would intimidate the subjects of police activity because the vast majority of people don't even know what a bit is, let alone what a harsh one looks like.
I dislike this video because what I noticed right off, was the incredibly long shanks on this bits!!... The longer the shank the more pain and pressure there is in the horses mouth. If the horses were ridden with light hands and a Mullen bit and desensitized to all kinds of things..maybe more would make it through the testing period...😞

The bits might seem bad on the outside, but it's mostly for show. The actual mouth piece, not the bit rings, are a lot softer than the bit ring looks to be.
ALL this training is beautiful , for a beautiful cause, however, what about when the horses' "animal instincts" happen to kick in at a certain time or place, and a horse ends up kicking a human?? A nice, strong, healthy horses' kick can lead to DEATH! just wondering. If anyone with a positive feedback can answer, That'd be great! Have a Nice Day everyone

@@furyxvanity2946 Too few people understand how western bits and spurs work because they never learnt how to ride properly, they have no understanding of pressure and release and think you either use no spurs or stab the horse so hard you break its ribs. I see english riders using double bridles and constant contact to get proper collection, you can still easily distinguish a good dressage rider and horse from the average; these people who are commenting cannot make the distinction, because they have no concept of how aids work and only know spurs and pulling on the reins.
@@sahara2679 I agree with what you say, too few people actually go through the process of learning and understanding a horse and their horse, if you use a spur right, in my case western you will barely touch the horse and they'll move but I think spurs are more for instances like barrels, cutting, roping, reining where you need just a little bit more control, and most English people I see have never used anything but a snaffle because its y know English,when they see people riding one handed and with solid long shank bits in western , they think the horse is being abused, to me English is just very rough and contact,pull that way pull this way, kick their ribs in, be closer, tighter, harder, just too much, everything should be stupidly simple and easy, you wann turn right, simple as tip the heaf enough till you see the corner of the eye, same time push with your left leg in the same position against the horse to turn them and not the bit, release the pressure in the reins, and turn the shoulders and the whole front of the horse turns, done right and when you know how, someone on the ground it will look like the horse is just turning and your doing nothing, that's how subtle I try to tell people to be, and yet they to turn right still kink the neck alot and turn with the head and push their right foot back to disengage the hind and they turn with the head, instead of just simply moving the whole front of the horse, i could say more and more, most people dont learn correct let alone learn English correct and then they try to tell western people how to ride when they barely know fuck all.
@@furyxvanity2946 Exactly, I do reining and the only time I find myself using spurs is while spinning really, and only while racing or preparing for a race, during exercise I don't really care about speed, reining is 85% how well the horse does the maneuver and how relaxed it is and 15% how fast it can do it, when I want a little speed while spinning I don't need to do anything special, just pull up the heel that little amount necessary to touch the underside of the barrel either left or right. When I started learning reining I watched my instructor train a colt, it looked like he wasn't doing anything, I went into horse riding with that mindset, learn the aids and you'll look cool on the saddle. Admittedly horses in training are not that sensitive, I had a mare with a habit of pushing herself and the rider against the fence, in this case you use spurs as positive punishment and roll them on the side to push the horse away from the fence, it's not abuse because the horse must quickly understand that it's VERY dangerous to do that, and it's not really that painful, I test spurs by rolling and jamming them into my hand or side with increasing force, they are a nuisance more than a pain when used smartly, which is perfect. I have had the displeasure of knowing a few "natural" riders: lazy horses that only want treats, kick, bite, push and even worse the owners who don't see anything wrong with that! Collection is nonexistent because barely any training goes into the horse, collection is vital for the horse to support the weight of the rider properly, but who cares, right? I'll stop the rant here.
Please, can you tell me why we need horses in the police force? Now I don't want to be rude to horse in any way but besides riding them what special abilities do horses have (example dogs have good ears) you don't need horses in the police force. I feel bad for how long horse have to be ridden on pure soled concrete don't respond back to me that that's why horses have shoes because although it helps their feet a little bit it still can hurt their feet expeshilly if they walk on concrete for too long!!!!
Actually a horse in a concrete road without shoes does more damage. My mother's horses feet always split when he goes on hacks, he doesn't have shoes on. As for your question, a horse is better at dealing with crowds as they're larger and takes less officers. A thug can overpower an officer, but not a horse.
Truly, any horse could make it through the test, but some might need a little more training than others. So, if the police are short on horses, they better not come to me begging for them, I will not sell to the police, chances are if the police aren't patient enough, and don't care to train my horse and it doesn't make the cut, there will be a 50% chance that my little baby (used to be MY horse) would end up in a slaughter farm.
The immense amount of training & investment that goes into horses means that it's only economical to start with a horse that has a good many years left. A horse like that with a calm temperament will be worth a good deal on the resale market.
The police on these horses are far to big for them, and they don't choose a horse because they are smarter, they choose it because its more easy to manipulate and more easy to make do what you want and I wont fight back. Horses Are Not Pets They Are Companions With Minds Of Their Own! Edit: This is only my opinion. I know people will want to hate or talk more about this, I just think that some of this is not really right.
I see you use a curb bit so just putting that in the mouth with no rider instantly put pressure on the jaw the poll neck back how would you like that and this is not me being all sad but evidence gain from medical tests and autopsy
I'm thinking, do they have breeding programs using these horses? Because even if it's no guarantee that every single one of the offspring of a horse will be suitable for the job. Over time, and making sure that they keep using horses with the same mentality. They'd still end up with more horses that can do the job.
Sounds like someone watches Rick Gore. None of these horses have "tie downs" it's a chest plate, if thats what you're referring to. Also, proper term for a "tie down" would be a Martingale, which does not, when used correctly, tie the horses head down. Bits are not the devil when used correctly, however here it does seem they are riding incorrectly and forcing the horses into a hollow position, which is incredibly incorrect. Shoes, people are complaining about shoes now, really? Horses feet are less likely to split in captivity with shoes on, shoes are beneficial to some horses while they are not to others. Get educated.

She's 30 and still in ridden work, if you take rein contact she will throw her head up so I can ride her easily just holding the buckle. Her eyesight is going but we have a bond so she trusts me, of course she can be an arsehole at times hence the bit. I would never ride out outside the arena without a bit, she's ex cross country so anytime she goes into the woods or a field she's ready to take off. I have to hold her back as she's on loan to a novice lady. Can't have her taking off like that with someone else. 🤭
It depends on how you use them, bits are necessary for most horses, especially here, because although it's nice to think the animal is so well trained it will always follow its rider, in a more dangerous situation, when the horse is nervous, a bit will definitely make a (positive) difference.
not true an educated rider knows any tack used incorrectly can be harmful and tack used correctly can be helpful using the correct bit can help a horse and harsher bits can be helpful for a horse with a hard mouth the rider ha a soft hand and bits can be helpful especially when jumping if you are jumping small such as a cross rail and your horse doesnt put effort in because they would rather jump big they can be useful even hackamores can be harmful with a harsh hand

To those who don't like the bits that are being used they are common bits nothing special as for there drop out rate I'll call b.s. its more like lazy trainer's try training mounted cav horses we not only have to train for crowd by riding into infantry lines who will bump them with their rifles hoot and holler but also gun fire and shooting off their backs Canon fire sword fighting then 5 minutes after battle ride in to the spectators for meet and greet they just want ready trained horses
I️ use a simple snaffle with sweet iron, (yes I️ can ride my horse but less and still do the same things, but he tends to get very strong and hot sometimes) but geez these massive shank bits are disgusting
You do realise 90% of western bits look like that, because they are trained to be bridle horses, in case of Western they are trained advanced enough to use a higher lever solid shank kerb bits, and you barely move the reins and the horses reacts, and western you dont control the horse with your reins and the bit, its all in your seat and body, compared to most English riders I see are extremely hard in the mouth and reins, and also you can see most of them are in western saddles and headstalls so they are probably using some western bit and honestly if you progress through the different stages of bits the right way you'll never hurt a horse's mouth.
@@furyxvanity2946 Too few people understand how western bits and spurs work because they never learnt how to ride properly, they have no understanding of pressure and release and think you either use no spurs or stab the horse so hard you break its ribs. I see english riders using double bridles and constant contact to get proper collection, you can still easily distinguish a good dressage rider and horse from the average; these people who are commenting cannot make the distinction, because they have no concept of how aids work and only know spurs and pulling on the reins.
@@sahara2679 I agree with what you say, too few people actually go through the process of learning and understanding a horse and their horse, if you use a spur right, in my case western you will barely touch the horse and they'll move but I think spurs are more for instances like barrels, cutting, roping, reining where you need just a little bit more control, and most English people I see have never used anything but a snaffle because its y know English,when they see people riding one handed and with solid long shank bits in western , they think the horse is being abused, to me English is just very rough and contact,pull that way pull this way, kick their ribs in, be closer, tighter, harder, just too much, everything should be stupidly simple and easy, you wann turn right, simple as tip the heaf enough till you see the corner of the eye, same time push with your left leg in the same position against the horse to turn them and not the bit, release the pressure in the reins, and turn the shoulders and the whole front of the horse turns, done right and when you know how, someone on the ground it will look like the horse is just turning and your doing nothing, that's how subtle I try to tell people to be, and yet they to turn right still kink the neck alot and turn with the head and push their right foot back to disengage the hind and they turn with the head, instead of just simply moving the whole front of the horse, i could say more and more, most people dont learn correct let alone learn English correct and then they try to tell western people how to ride when they barely know fuck all.
@@furyxvanity2946 Exactly, I do reining and the only time I find myself using spurs is while spinning really, and only while racing or preparing for a race, during exercise I don't really care about speed, reining is 85% how well the horse does the maneuver and how relaxed it is and 15% how fast it can do it, when I want a little speed while spinning I don't need to do anything special, just pull up the heel that little amount necessary to touch the underside of the barrel either left or right. When I started learning reining I watched my instructor train a colt, it looked like he wasn't doing anything, I went into horse riding with that mindset, learn the aids and you'll look cool on the saddle.
Admittedly horses in training are not that sensitive, I had a mare with a habit of pushing herself and the rider against the fence, in this case you use spurs as positive punishment and roll them on the side to push the horse away from the fence, it's not abuse because the horse must quickly understand that it's VERY dangerous to do that, and it's not really that painful, I test spurs by rolling and jamming them into my hand or side with increasing force, they are a nuisance more than a pain when used smartly, which is perfect.
I have had the displeasure of knowing a few "natural" riders: lazy horses that only want treats, kick, bite, push and even worse the owners who don't see anything wrong with that! Collection is nonexistent because barely any training goes into the horse, collection is vital for the horse to support the weight of the rider properly, but who cares, right? I'll stop the rant here.

Now I don't want to be rude to horse in any way but besides riding them what special abilities do horses have (example dogs have good ears) you don't need horses in the police force. I feel bad for how long horse have to be ridden on pure soled concrete

Actually a horse in a concrete road without shoes does more damage. My mother's horses feet always split when he goes on hacks, he doesn't have shoes on.
As for your question, a horse is better at dealing with crowds as they're larger and takes less officers. A thug can overpower an officer, but not a horse.
Truly, any horse could make it through the test, but some might need a little more training than others. So, if the police are short on horses, they better not come to me begging for them, I will not sell to the police, chances are if the police aren't patient enough, and don't care to train my horse and it doesn't make the cut, there will be a 50% chance that my little baby (used to be MY horse) would end up in a slaughter farm.

The immense amount of training & investment that goes into horses means that it's only economical to start with a horse that has a good many years left. A horse like that with a calm temperament will be worth a good deal on the resale market.

The police on these horses are far to big for them, and they don't choose a horse because they are smarter, they choose it because its more easy to manipulate and more easy to make do what you want and I wont fight back. Horses Are Not Pets They Are Companions With Minds Of Their Own!

I'm thinking, do they have breeding programs using these horses? Because even if it's no guarantee that every single one of the offspring of a horse will be suitable for the job. Over time, and making sure that they keep using horses with the same mentality. They'd still end up with more horses that can do the job.

Sounds like someone watches Rick Gore. None of these horses have "tie downs" it's a chest plate, if thats what you're referring to. Also, proper term for a "tie down" would be a Martingale, which does not, when used correctly, tie the horses head down.
Bits are not the devil when used correctly, however here it does seem they are riding incorrectly and forcing the horses into a hollow position, which is incredibly incorrect.
Shoes, people are complaining about shoes now, really? Horses feet are less likely to split in captivity with shoes on, shoes are beneficial to some horses while they are not to others.

She's 30 and still in ridden work, if you take rein contact she will throw her head up so I can ride her easily just holding the buckle. Her eyesight is going but we have a bond so she trusts me, of course she can be an arsehole at times hence the bit. I would never ride out outside the arena without a bit, she's ex cross country so anytime she goes into the woods or a field she's ready to take off. I have to hold her back as she's on loan to a novice lady. Can't have her taking off like that with someone else. 🤭

It depends on how you use them, bits are necessary for most horses, especially here, because although it's nice to think the animal is so well trained it will always follow its rider, in a more dangerous situation, when the horse is nervous, a bit will definitely make a (positive) difference.

not true an educated rider knows any tack used incorrectly can be harmful and tack used correctly can be helpful using the correct bit can help a horse and harsher bits can be helpful for a horse with a hard mouth the rider ha a soft hand and bits can be helpful especially when jumping if you are jumping small such as a cross rail and your horse doesnt put effort in because they would rather jump big they can be useful even hackamores can be harmful with a harsh hand
