    Some may not take the B52's seriously, only as a novelty act, but they were quite innovative. The guitar riffs (Ricky Wilson, RIP) were always interesting and well structured, along with the backbeat and signing, the ladies (Kate and Cindy) and Fred. Those first two albums were their best.

    John Lennon talked about them in an interview, and said the B52's were one of his inspirations for getting back to recording after a five-year hiatus. The result was his and Yoko's last album, Double Fantasy. He heard Rock Lobster in a club somewhere and immediately fell in love with them. The B52's, Devo, Television and the Talking Heads all showed up around the same time (late '70's), and I got excited about music heading in a strange new direction.

    • @99tonnes
      @99tonnes 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I heard that about about Lennon. Shame the inspiration led to such a lame album... and I dig the Beatles as much as anyone, but let's not kid ourselves. I remember the day he was shot, and all that. Very sad, but it didn't make Double Fantasy a good record.

    B52s...a guilty pleasure maybe. The male vocalist has a very distinctive, quirky voice and the female vocalists voices are really good IMO. (I don't know any of their names) They don't take themselves too seriously and make fun songs. I really like Channel Z as one of their lesser known songs.

    Planet Claire, Dance This Mess Around are transcendent. You might like Bouncing Off the Satellites (the entire album) which is rich with studio polish and the band excels. The beeping in the beginning is the same beep as that transmitted by satellites in the late 1950s. The main riff is the theme to Peter Gunn (t.v.) in the early sixties by Henry Mancini. The Beez fully acknowledge Mancini.

    How did I miss this?! This was the second album I bought with my own money at 14. (First was Aja by Steely Dan). I love this band!!! Can you read to 52 girls? So underrated but utterly fabulous. Also, Private Idaho, Give Me Back My Man, and Ain't it a Shame are brilliant. OMG there are so many great tunes.

    When it came out in 1979, critics called it New Wave musics. It was the end of Disco era.

    We all know a Claire, and she definitely comes from another planet of her own. That's the meaning of this song. It's about a women so out there, she has to be an alien.
    My favorite B52s song is Dance This Mess Around. Cindy's vocals are always their best songs. Also, Give Me Back My Man is a Cindy song.

    The guitar is the theme to the TV series "Peter Gunn". Obviously inspired by "The Ventures".

    It's really from their first album (as I'm sure lots of people have said in the last 3 years). I'd just like to boast that I saw their first UK show, at the Lyceum, back in '79, with my cool friends Paul and Paul. I have pictures to prove it. It was a lot of fun, as you can imagine, a lot of fun. If I remember rightly they were supported by Fashion, who sort of nearly had a hit once, but pretty quickly sank without trace. Also maybe Delta Five. Happy days...

    Graduated HS in '79 and went to Ohio State (before it was stupidly branded "THE" Ohio State University) and at the time it had one of the largest densities of bars in the US with over 101 bars in the couple of miles of High Street (well named) that ran through campus. We haunted Mean Mr. Mustard and Crazy Mama's the "New Wave" and "Punk" clubs and you could see people dressed like B-52's any night. It was a great time!

    Oh! LOVE B 52s! You have to know how great their sense of irony is. Quiche Lorraine is my favorite EVER! Is he singing about a dog??? Hmmmmm.......
